Default Trunk Lid Swapping Guide?

OK...I picked up my new STi on Friday.

The rear spoiler has got to go as it obscures my rearward view of the horizon to check for pursuing blue lights.

I'm looking to swap trunk lids with a 2004 Aspen White WRX, but I'd like to know more about how difficult it is to swap and how long it might take.

Are there any online guides from others who have done the swap before?

-Michael

Here is a co that has a carbon fiber deck and it also shows that an 02, and 03 will fit your 04. I am doing the same thing right now and will prob get a new lid from the dealer, its like $350 then paint it. I want to save the orig for when I go to sell the car later on because that is what everyone wants the dum wing.

You could do it inside of an hour. Removing the trunk itself is just 4 bolts, but the trunk spring is the hard part. I've heard it's easier with the trunk closed, but I've also heard it's easier open. Who knows. This is where my knowledge ends, unfortunately.

If you want to get rid of your trunk, post in the "wanted" section. Somebody will swap trunks with you in no time flat.

Also, check out your regional forums.

On another note, did you happen to sell a 2002 WRX to CarMax? ;-) Mine came from Georgia.

He's right. Inside an hour
4 bolts
1 Brake Light connector
Swap out locks (Don't want to make that mistake)

If you have the STI trunk and you are swapping to a lid with a WRX spoiler, I wouldn't bother switching out the torsion bars. You can put 2 rubber pads where the trunk arms meet the car, when fully open, to cushion it when it opens.

The trunk springs are cake. a long screwdriver is the only tool you need. Basically you stick it in one of the sides (on the trunk lid) and leverage it enough to where you can close the little arm that supports the spring. Repeat on other side.

OK, having looked more closely at my STi trunk now, it doesn't seem too bad.

4 bolts....disconnect brake light connector.....swap locks.

Is the 2004 WRX center brake light an LED light?

I'm still curious to know if there needs to be any change to the springs.

The basic WRX spoiler (at least the ones that I've seen) are fairly large. I'd be surprised if they were all that different in weight. Plus the WRX spoiler is much lower (obviously), and the STi wing goes "over center" at some point and the extra moment due to the wing weight is negated.

I'm wondering if messing with the springs is truly necessary. I was thinking of leaving them alone, and installing a couple of extra compression springs on the bumper pads to slow the trunk down when it swings fully open before contacting the stops.

But I'll look more closely at the springs this afternoon....maybe it isn't all that much work to tinker with those either.
