Forester STi steering rack / XT upgrade.

The new 04 STi steering rack will arrive this week. It is going on my 04 Forester XT soon.
The fifty dollar question is do I need/want to upgrade to the 04 STi power steering pump too (#34430FE040).
The part numbers are different from my XT (#34430SA000).
I donít mind doing it if there is a good reason to upgrade the pump also.
Any advice is appreciated .
Richard

First you'll need find out the difference between the two pumps. If it is "less" of a pump, I'd say yes to upgrading the pump as well. It may "work" w/o it, but you could experience some "groaning" at low speed turning. Too bad the XT didn't get the new pump- the 04+ WRX's get it, the 02/03's didn't- they came w/ a 34430FE002.

I don't know where the XT pump falls in???

Hyper, the best price I found was on this thread from 1stSubarparts.com.

I got my local dealer to match it, 457.95 no shipping just local tax.

The 04 STi steering rack has finally been installed. I had it professionally done. It is cold here and the prospect of wrestling with it on my back in freezing weather on cold concrete inspired me to spend my Subaru Bucks and some bonus money. The rack wasnít centered properly out of the box from the factory and Tommy said he had to take it out and move it over two splines to get it centered properly. I think the $445 was money well spent to have him install it. I also upgraded the stock bushing to Whitelines at the same time.
The best news of all for me was it was a simple bolt in. There was no guarantee that it would fit.

Iíve only driven it about 5 miles.
Initial impressions are:
The STi rack has a much more direct feel to it.
Gone is the looseness on center.
Steering effort has increased just slightly.
It only takes a small flick of the wrist to change lanes.
Making a sharp 90 degree turn takes much less turning input.

I need more seat time to make a final judgement, but right now I am very, very happy with it.

Cool. Is the stock Forester XT rack 16.5:1? And did you end up keeping the Forester pump or did you use the STi one?

driggity,
I wish the Forester rack was 16.5:1. I probably wouldn't have done this upgrade if it was.
USDM STI rack is 15.2:1 and 2.7 turns lock to lock.
USDM WRX is 16.5:1 and 3 turns lock to lock.
Ours are variable 19.1:1 in the center, 15.2:1 near the ends and three turns also.
After talking with my local Subaru guru we decided not upgrade to the STi pump.
