Looks like Mercedes is the first to release a fully approved level 3 autonomous self driving system in the US

Quote:
Mercedes Drive Pilot, which will be available on the S-Class and EQS Sedan for 2024, is the first Level 3 system available in the United States. The key advancement here is that it does not require the driver to pay attention. They can use the vast central touchscreen to watch videos, play games or browse the internet while the car does all the work. Looking at your phone still runs afoul of California and Nevada law (that would be just one of the laws that need some adjustment due to this system), but apparently reading old-fashioned printed materials like books and magazines should be OK. I’d consult a lawyer about that, but apparently it’s not explicitly forbidden unlike phones, instead falling under “distracted driving,” which I’m guessing is negated by the Level 3 capability. Again, just a guess, not a lawyer.

That Foxconn is setting up shop in the US to work with Fisker for the PEAR also says a lot (and not to the positive with their issues with other mfrs in and out of the US, ref: Lordstown Motors)

That said, I actually have one of the 1st 500 deposits on the PEAR. No clue if I'll have the house electric upgraded by then or not. Not sure how committed I am to the bit of having an electric car... Plug in hybrid may be a better bet for my needs.

If you end up getting a Pear would be cool to hear your user experience as this groups potential first Fisker EV owner.

Latest update on Rivian R2, estimated to start at $40K, will fully qualify for $7500 fed tax credit. Slated to be formally announced next year and go on sale 2026.

If the company maintains financial health until then this could promise to do a lot for them.

I still think an EV Fit would sell if priced at somewhere around $35k.

Honda did that. It cost $37k in 2020 had a 20kwh battery and a range of 83 miles (only sold in Cali, I think).

I'm sure they could do better with a proper EV platform.. but:

All tiny EVs kinda suck and they will likely always suck until battery tech dramatically improves. Long wheelbase EVs with 70kwh batteries are going to be the bare minimum for anything over $35k for the next decade. Most subcompact EVs struggle to get 100 miles of range because 100" of wheelbase doesn't leave much room for batteries. The smaller batteries also charge slowly and provide inadequate performance.

MINI USA is trying to avoid adopting EVs right now, because the only ones they can offer within the brand will be overpriced and uncompetitive.

The Chevy Bolt is sold as a subcompact, but its wheelbase is a full 6" longer than the Fit's, and despite the extra length and EV-based platform, it still only has 65kwh of battery. Its planned replacement was/is(?) the Equinox, which is 10" longer still (116.3"). Long is the new hot, although the Bolt seems to be the bare minimum EV benchmark to drive sales.

Side rant:

I'd be happy if Honda kept the 20kwh battery and turned the fit into a PHEV.. or, you know, sold any of their cars as a PHEV again. They just released the PHEV CR-V in Europe... but have stated they have no plans to bring it to North America. Smaller cars make more sense as PHEVs, IMO. It's the only way to get around the downsides of smaller batteries, and the technology (at least, in the way Honda has implemented it) dramatically improves the driving experience over their conventional drivetrains (although only marginally better than their standard hybrids).
Seriously, I was reading up on the PHEV CR-V on a CR-V forum and the new (non-PHEV) hybrid owners were completely smitten with their new cars. There's a reason Honda is coupling the hybrid drivetrain with the more expensive equipment packages now. My wife and I were talking bout it earlier today.. and we'd buy a PHEV or EV Odyssey in a heartbeat.

Not surprised to see it already for sale on Cars & Flips.

Now that I've watched most of the video, the infotainment screen in that thing looks unacceptably laggy. Takes literally a few seconds for the screen to display when switching from portrait to landscape and back, and looks to be a good half second delay when selecting things on the screen.
