Default Cigarette Lighter

Anyone plug a cell phone into the cigarette lighter? The manual says not to cause it could start a fire or something,....is this just a regular lighter or does it have some querk?

I don't know which car you've got, but I keep my cell phone plugged into the lighter all the time with no problem. Didn't see anything about that in my manual.

I have a scented oil thing in my lighter.
I've noticed that sometimes when I turn the car off ... it will make a sound like it 'sparked'. But that could be because of the unit...not with the subaru hardware...

Unless, sometimes it sends abnormal voltage through the wire when the car shuts off...but I also have my V1 hooked up to the hot wire in the lighter...and never had ANY problems with that.

that's weird... i don't think a cell phone, or radar detector will do anything harmful... if you tried to use a heating element with the stock form, it won't work... it's set up for a power outlet, not to light cigs... honda cars do the same thing

I read that in the manual to. It says that you should not plug any electical device into the socket. It is only to be used with the cigarette lighter. Page 6-9 in the owners bible.....

I however have been using it for my radar detector and have had no fires of any sort

My sales guy actually mentioned this when I picked up my car. He basically said to use common sense and ignore the warning. He mentioned that it was a "CYA" statement. He said stuff that pulls a modest amount of power was completely fine to plug in but not to plug in a large boom box or one of those camping coolers/refrigerators...

Darn it! I guess I need to unplug my HVAC system. I was wondering what was causing that fire in my dash...

So what about the Plug in the back of the newer wagons? The sales man Had said it was perfect for the Subaru/Igloo Electric Cooler and it only cost $3oo-$370 Extra

Does that warning strike anyone else as being incredibly stupid considering that most of our cars probably didn't even come with the "optional" cigarette lighter?!? Mine just came with a rubber plug, so what is heck is supposed to go into that hole in the dash?

Wht they ment was if you plug anything other than the cigarette lighter in it the release mechanisum in it can be damaged (meaning the lighter will not pop out) which then caused it to overheat and then inturn cause a fire. Poof no more car so not so stupid after all.
