Date On: 12/03/01 (15K miles - came on while shooting through traffic (rapid on and off throttle )

Code: vent controll solenoid
Dealer: Metric Subaru
Action the dealer took: scanned, and reset...did not come back. Dealer also noticed that there was next to no pressure in the fuel tank (read about .01 psi)with about 1/2 tank. Opening and closing gas cap did not cause any change, as if locked up. After ECU reset, CEL went away, and fuel tank- pressure function returned to normal.

I got 2 CELs in the space of about 90 miles, first was reset by the dealership, they reported it to be an evap leak code (P0437?)

Next one was the same thing and they replaced my fuel cap (they said it was cracked)

We'll see if that was it, hopefully so.

- Richard.

02 WRX Wagon
9600 miles
Both CELs in 5th gear, Freeway cruising about 65mph.

Got the CEL again yesterday!

Again I was cruising the Freeway 70mph, still awaiting a callback from SOA about my ABS and CEL problems.

I'm guessing it's the same code (Evap leak) Can't believe I have to take the car in again!!

That's 3 times in 3 tanks of gas.

-Richard

DEC 27th UPDATE: turns out there was a loose hose on the "drain valve" in the rear of the car (guess they didn't spot it the first 3 times!) The hose was reattached but I still got the CEL, so they tellme my ECM needs recalibrating. I have to take the car in Jan 2nd and leave it there while my ECM is shipped back to SOA, recalibrated, shipped back and reinstalled. I get to drive some crappy Taurus or something meanwhile.

I got a flashing CEL for like 15 seconds after I had installed a Unichip and Uppipe, went for a drive then slammed on the gas in second gear. I think I took it to 6500rpm it was running fine and stong but the light blinked at me then went away. *WEIRD*

Code: P0303?? Misfire

They want to send my ECU for "reprogramming" next week. They will provide a rental as part of my warranty service.

BTW, these guys took my car in this morning with no appointment on my way to work. They have a really great service department.

6200 miles p0303

I have hesitation on boost in all gears. SOA is going to have my dealer (Wentworth) take a look at it when I have the oil pump leak taken care of.
In what cases do dealers seem to be sending the ECU back for reprogramming? I was under the impression it was for p1443 not p0303?

PM with any info, thanks!

Cool CEL Problems

CAR: WRX Sedan
VIN# 506295
Peninsula Subaru in Gorst Washington
Occurred between 6500 and 7300 miles so far.
Transmission: Automatic
Five times into the dealership, each time I got the CEL I also had an Automatic Transmission Temp light start blinking.

Four Cures so far:
1st Replace the Mass air flow sensor
2nd Replace the O2 sensor
3rd Replace the ECM and TCM - Transmission Control module
4th Remove the mask from the hood

Since all of the problems occurred in the rain the dealership has decided that the mask is holding water and dumping water into the engine when I accelerate. This is even though the problem occurred at 20 mph with no acceleration the first time and at approximately 30 mph and slowing the last time. I am going to talk to them about getting the ECM reprogrammed. I hope that will be the final cure.

Date On: 12/17/01 (17K miles - came on while cruising @ 70 mph(steady throttle), blinked 3 times then extinguished. About 100 miles later, CEL came back on, but steady. CEL extinguished on it's own about 400 miles(4 days) later.

Code: vent controll solenoid...AGAIN

Dealer: Metric Subaru

Action the dealer took: SOA Tech re-flashed the Eprom, while at the dealer. Dealer setup date for many WRXs to gather for massive flash session. IMHO, much much better than sending ECM back to SOA. ECM had to be accessed for flashing...not done through OBD II port.

The dealer reset my ECU and sent me on my way. He said it could be due to water in my gas tank or some dodgy gas. I only ever fill up with premium though...

Came on also while idleing in a steady downpoar. Dealer ordered a #3 cylinder coil, which is a different fix than I've read on this thread. Will update when part comes in.

Default WRX ECU problems

I have a 2002 WRX with 7500 miles on it....about a week ago I had an oil change, and the threads in the oil pan were toast, so Auburn Subaru helped me tremendously by changing the pan out in 24 hours...GOOD JOB GUYS!!!

Then the really bad thing happened; I was sitting at a stoplight, when the Check Engine Light came on. As I started accelerating from the stoplight, I noticed a definite lack of power...I drove home, then back to the Subaru dealer in Auburn.....now this was at 4pm on a Friday afternoon, and I had no idea what to expect...apparently the computer dropped #3 cylinder, and the code that came out told the guys in Service to send the ECU back to Subaru for re-programming. This is the first time I've had any problems with this car, and the 7500 were not easy miles.....but lo and behold the Auburn Subaru guys came through....they gave me a 99 Impreza to drive until my car gets fixed.....although it sure doesn't do 0-60 in 5.4 seconds....and it's an automatic...but at least I have a car till mine is fixed.

I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem....I have heard about resets, but never taking the computer out to reprogram it.

Thanks...and a tip of my hat to the guys in the service department at Auburn Subaru.

Default Oil Pan Threads

You said the oil pan threads were toast--please explain. Who changed the oil previously? Why were the drain plug threads stripped?

The first oil change at 3000 was done at a Subaru dealer in Yakima.....the last one at Auburn Subaru...when the mechanic pulled out the drain plug, he noticed rips in the threads....so I asked if I could look at the threads, as I am a journeyman machinist. I looked at the threads on the drain plug, and they were about 30% gone....the pan side showed double-crested threads, which leads me to believe it was either a factory defect, or on the first oil change, the plug wasn't threaded into the pan properly. But I would probably believe it was a defect from the factory...could have been soft steel in the plug material...a number of things could cause thread galling...unless they missed the tolerance between the plug and the pan.
BTW...the dang computer going out is the first electronic problem I've had, and I've put some hard miles on the car already.

* WRX Wagon
* Dealership: Austin Subaru in Austin, TX
* Miles: 11 and again at 120 (brand new car)
* Codes: P0171, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304

P0171 - engine is running lean
P030x - cylinder misfire (x = cylinder number)

Both CELs had all the above codes; the first time the dealership thought it may just be some minor just-fresh-from-the-factory thing and cleared the codes without further diagnostics.

The second time the dealership wanted to look. A disconnected vacuum line was found and once reconnected, the engine ran better of course, and the CELs stopped occuring. The CEL has not triggered since the fix.

Being a brand new car, this was a frustrating experience but I figured it was something minor. Luckily it was!

Oh dear God.

Almost lost count of the number of P0457 CEL's:

CEL... Reset by dealer
CEL... New Fuel Cap installed by dealer
CEL... Reset by dealer
CEL... Drain Pipe fixed by dealer
CEL... SOA reprogrammed my ECM

and now guess what, less than 200 miles after my new ECM...

CEL.

Do I have any constructive comments or advice for others?? No, I'm just really upset, my WRX is not well and SOA can't fix it.

- Richard.

Angry misfire

WRX Sedan 5-speed w/3000 miles
CODE: P0303 (misfire in #3 cylinder)
The CEL was steady-on, not on-off-on
Dealer: Dellenbach Motors, Fort Collins, CO

Action: Dealer took a look, stuck his thumb in his ass (where his head was) and said nothing was wrong. He said it might be a problem with the gasoline in the winter time around here (additives and stuff). Suggested maybe a fuel injector cleanor or octane booster. Yeah right. Not gonna pay extra on top of the price of supreme gas. If something is wrong with the engine, they better fix it next time.

I'll check the spark plug wires like I've seen in other posts, and maybe get some sealant against moisture for them (although it's pretty dry here).

Reset by Wentworth- Portland OR

CEL came on at a steady 60mph. There was a pulse (loss of power) when the light came on. There was a loss of power in the high-boost range, 3000-6000 rpm, which went away after several days (without reseting). CEL light went off the day after it came on.

Wentworth said it only needed to be reset not reflashed.
