Default USDM 2.5L STi shortblock vs EJ22T Shortblock

I am looking to replace a blown shortblock in my 2002 WRX. Was pretty much set on on a USDM 2.5L block, but now am thinking about the EJ22T shortblock. What do you guys think? I am going with a clipped TD06 20G for a turbo and don't really have a HP goal in mind. I Just wants gobs of power. Any thoughts?

Dave

The EJ22T block features a fully closed "deck".
Subaru hasn't produced these for some time, and it is very hard to find one of these.

Finding a USDM 2.5 partially closed Turbo block is a lot easier to find.

Start with the EJ22T if its a bare bones build including rods and pistons. Crawford says they have a new no-slap forged piston, so thats the way I'd go. I'd use a phase 1 EJ25 crank while I was at it and end up with 2.4l I think the best thing about the EJ22T is the oil squirters for the pistons. It helps keep the temp of the pistons down and more uniform, reducing the chance for knock.

The USDM 2.5 is the simple way out. You know its built right by the factory and its a brand new block. Its also cheaper than a full EJ22T build. Crawford also makes pistons for this motor for use with WRX heads. They bring the compression ratio down to a reasonable 8.0:1

I have one in my car. They're not that rare.

I'd go ej257:
-Both do not have forged pistons...ej257 pistons are stronger imo.
-extra displacement of ej257 (you won't rev out the ej22 anyway with stock wrx heads)

You won't reach the point where you need a closed deck. With an ej257 you get better piston design, more displacement, newer crank design, and they are readily available and are proven to make good usable power if tuned well. Now if you are building a motor that is a different story.

Agreed in it's entirety.

Especially with the prices 257s are right now, this plan really does make the most sense. If you're set on added displacement, 257 is the way to go. Personally, I prefer the 207s, but it sounds like you are only looking to replace the shortblock.

wow guys thanks for the thoughts. I've been doing tons of research (there is sooo much info out there) and am going to go with the 2.5L. Can't wait to get my WRX back on the road, it's been too long.

Here is the next question. Any market out there (or does anybody) want the shortblock from my WRX? 80k miles with a roasted piston?

Stock block the 2.5 is probably good for you. But if you're doing headwork and getting stronger pistons, EJ22T for the win.

I just bought a EJ22T shortblock with 100k miles on it for $300 shipped. Gonna rip it apart this winter and come out with a monster.
