When OCD meets opportunity.....The 1991 Legacy Turbo Project
Well I have been very very busy over the last few weeks, I have finally got the Legacy Turbo from Texas and was really dissapointed at first, now I have spent a huge amount of time stripping and cleaning the car and I am currently working on buying a very rare rs ra to swap everything over into this shell. I have basically two things going with that being said, I am still working on making this car nice as I will strip and sell everything from this car once I purchase an RA but untill that time I plan to use the car as it is.
I will post the pictures I have but unfortunately at first I was so upset with what I saw that I did not even take pictures because I thought I had bought a very rough car but as I stripped and cleaned it off I found it to be quite a nice car. It has had massive oil leaks for years and was running rough and smoking because of all the leaks in the engine bay but as I cleaned away all the dirt and oil I found some very nice and well preserved pieces. So the Thread is finally underway but unfortunately we have very limited internet access so it will probably be slowly updated. I will post a few pictures to start

I have about 60 hours into stripping and cleaning the car, and so far I found that the shift linkage bushings were all gone and the Intake hose from the Turbo to the intake manifold was cracked. I have completely gone through the intake system including the air filter box and all the vacuum hoses etc and we have made a short throw shifter by modifying the original shifter pivot points which I will post pictures of soon. I will be stripping and rebuilding the turbo this week and having the wheels painted gold soon and fitting a new set of pirellis. I hope by tomorrow morning I will have purchased the rs ra....This project will be huge if I get the ra as it will involve completely stripping two Legacys plus having the one shipped here from overseas to build one great Subaru Legacy rs ra....now that will be as cool as my 22B!

I wish I had the time and space to start something as sweet as this, I guess if I did I would probably still have my Supra. Definitely subscribing.

Why would you buy a legacy turbo to do a rs ra swap? If you're doing a full swap, it would be just as easy with a regular legacy like an LSi or GT, and the legacy turbo would be left for someone else to play with.

The RS RA that I am looking at is actually a Legacy as well. I want to be able to fit everything into this car if I can actually get an RS RA, I would want to use everything from the original car. I wished there were ways around the import rules but basically I can not import a complete car so I will buy and strip one if I can find the right car, I do not want to ruin a good one so I am looking for a donor car that can be stripped. The only thing I would use from the US legacy is the body shell and front crossmember etc that is related to LHD. At the moment I am working on fixing up and using the Legacy as it is until the right donor car can be found!

Here are a few pictures as the car sits today, there have been some huge dissapointments in this project and some good surprises as there are a lot of nice pieces still on the car. I will post some of the bad things as but it is generally a good car that needs a lot of work |

Oh wow. Definitely a rare gem you picked up there. One of my first Subaru's was a 91 Legacy Turbo. Probably one of the most enjoyable car to have own in it's time.
Good luck with everything. I think I still have the trunk organizing tray if you need one Oh and a sunroof visor. |

I bought the car from Auto 4 less in Pasadena Texas, I have to tell you although the car looks good in the photos it has taken a huge amount of work to get it to this point and still much more to go. The dealer was very deceptive, and when I asked for pictures of any defects he sent me pictures of a small tear in the seat and and a broken antenna and what looked to be a small scratch in the rear bumper. Unfortunately he failed to mention the smashed windshield, the dent in the drivers door, the smashed right indicator lens, the fact the the car was leaking water and mouldy inside to the point the carpet was black with mould and that it had a damaged right front fender. The rear spoiler was damaged and it had been repaired and there was no paint on it. I would really like to do something about it as it was not adequately represented at all, actually the salesman did some very creative photos so as not to capture these things when he emailed me the pictures. Hey I think it would be great if everyone on the forum that read this called them and told them what they think about it, maybe they would think twice about poorly representing a vehicle. |

ok so here is the short shift that we made out of the original lever. we cut the pivot bucket off and lowered it on the mounting/pivot rod to get clearence off the floor and then added an extension to the shift lever itself to move the pivot point further away from the shift rod. We then made new bushings from Delron and it worked out really well, it shifts really nicely! |

Great project, looking forward to see what you'll do with it. I love my 1993 Legacy Touring Wagon, it's the perfect project car. Are you on Legacycentral?

What are you looking for? Something louder than stock? I have an exhaust for a WRX on my wagon, which had to be extended and a hanger had to be rotated for it to fit. Downpipe bolted right up however. I feel like since your sedan is shorter, a WRX exhaust might bolt right up.
