(CO) 5/5/06 Pueblo MSP $100/$120 track days, who's in?
EDIT:
Updated: New Dates are as follows: ***OPEN*** Track Day ($100full day NASIOCers & Anyon else) May 5th 2006! Without 10 firm drivers the track will be opened, and non-exclusive. -=-=-=- 5/5/06 Drivers: 1. Me 06 STI 2. NH 06 STI 3. Foxy? 4. STIMachine? 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. * Tentative as of 4/120/06 If you post on iClub or AWDPirates, etc, and know of people there, get them involved! -=-=-OP Below-=-=- Since Second Creek (Denver) closed, PMSP seems the most likely place for track time/track days. I've already contacted them several times, and their prices are *very* reasonable. If we RMIC NASIOCers can just get organized and get 10 of us together, then just the 10 of us can have the ENTIRE TRACK for the ENTIRE DAY! Post below if you'd be interested, and by interested, I mean have the $100 and be able to get the day off, etc. I can't do this all on my own, so obviously we'll have to figure out how to coordinate it all, since I can't front the $1000 for everyone. However, I'd be willing to work with Jay and Erlene @ PMSP to see if we can get a RMIC/NASIOC day for just us if we can get the $1000 together. Post below if you're interested, what car you'll be bringing (you'll also need a DOT-approved helmet) and if you can do April 5th or not. PS: I may need a helper-monkey with all the coordination anyone willing to help organize, post or PM me. I know I'm not the only one here with the itch to get my RS/WRX/STI or friggin Cobalt rental on the track now that spring weather is here! http://www.pueblomotorsportspark.com/pmiroad.htm Lemme know...

Try posting this on AWDpirates.net... all the locals hang out there. You will easily get 10 people there. Oh and count me in!

Foxy:
Yeah, Weekends are reserved for Races by various sanctioning bodies, so only the weekdays are free. But, the joy of a ticket-free Track Day offsets the loss of one day of work. TwoFive: Hey, you mind throwing a post up there? Link it to here or here to there =-= Right now I've got like 2 people at the dealership and maybe a customer or two interested, not sure *how* interested. If we can pull this off, and reserve the entire 2.2mi track the 10 of us should be able to space it out so there's no worry about someone swapping paint or punting someone into a wall--save that crap for NASCAR Ok...I'll keep checking on things, we get close and I'll need money from people to get the track reserved, but let's get the people first... |

Looks like we may have 6-7 already, I'll just have to see that the day is still available and try to figure out how to deal with getting funds coordinated to pay for it.
Otherwise, get your helmets, gas up, and get ready to have some (safe) fun! |

Four things..
1. What's a DOT-Approved helmet? What sticker should I look for on the helmet? Do they have loaners? 2. Need to see if I have $100 to spend 3. Need to know what date exactly 4. I've never been on a road course before, and I have only powerslots/ss lines/hawk HPS for brakes, and Falken Ziex 512's (all seasons) for tires. Am I going to die? Right now, it probably wouldn't be good to count me on the list; I kinda doubt I'll be able to swing a day off that quickly. |

Four Answers (sorta)...
1. DOT-approved helmets will have a small white & black DOT sticker on the back, or inside somewhere. If it's SNELL approved, then it's automatically DOT approved as SNELL is higher than DOT. Since this isn't a race, and there's no sanctioning body, I'm not even sure they'll check, so just grab any helmet and they'll probably OK it. I don't know if the track has loaners, but someone here might, I'm already loaning out my extras or I'd offer one. 2. You do, just dig under the couch, in the center console, etc 3. The date will be Wednesday, April 5th. There will probably be other dates, but this is the closest available. I'll also check to see what's available down the road, but as spring gets warmer, we'll lose more days to organized events. 4. I've run a bone-stock FXT on Geolanders before, and I've seen pretty much everything on the track. Most people are bring complete street/stock setups, the key isn't the car, it's the driver. Just drive like you would normally, and if you notice brake fade, or excessive tire wear, back off, pit and cool down, etc. Your setup should be fine, no worries. It's not a race, it's just a day to have a blast driving your car like you *wish* you could every day. It's just up to the driver to know their limits, and their car's limit and not go over the line. If you drive within those limits, you and your car will be fine. It's when people push beyond limits that cars get wrecked and people get hurt--which I really don't want to see and definitely don't want to be part of. Quote:

I have the 512s on my Evo. They're not the greatest, but you should be OK. I've noticed that running higher tire pressure helps. Try 40 psi cold. Stuff I bring to the track: * Tools (socket set, assorted screwdrivers, jack, torque wrench, tire pressure guage) * extra set of front pads if you got 'em. Ideally, you should run a different pad at the track than on the street. No worries if you can't. Just adjust your driving style accordingly. * Bring plenty of water & food to munch on. * Sunscreen * Helmet What I leave at home: * My ego. I let my wife hang onto it for the day. It's a good idea to score a ride-along with someone who's driven the track & knows the line. Go slow your first couple times out and get a feel for the line. Being smooth in your transitions counts for more than you would realize. I've been in cars with drivers that felt slow, but were actually turning good lap times. Take the time to warm up and cool down between hot laps. The warmup is for you to get the feel of the track again and bring your brakes back up to an effective temp (if you're running more aggressive pads). The cool down helps cool down the car (motor, rotors, pads) before you pit. Refrain from using your e-brake when you pit. Overall, it's a total blast & the most fun I've had with my cars. GhostRider hit it on the head when he said that it's up to the driver to know his/her limits & the limits of the car. I had some of my best days (most fun) at the track driving at 8/10 & just enjoying the experience. Go for it, you won't regret it. |

There are 3 other drivers who will be at the track, so we can't do an Exclusive NASIOC day at this point, which is OK too, since we probably needed more planning to pull that off--I would have given you guys more time had I known about it sooner.
I'm still going to be there Wednesday, and 2-3 people are going with me, so if Foxy and TwoFive show, then that's 6 NASIOCers and 3 others, so still a good (small) group for a 2.2mi track. Also, if $100 is too steep, just go for a 1/2 day for $60. A 1/2 day is 4hrs from when you show (anytime 8am to 4pm, when the track closes, so if you show @ 3pm, you'll only get 1 hour for the 1/2 day rate). I'm not sure if there will be fuel avalible at the track, if there isn't then you'll have to leave, refuel and return. Adding to Diz (who gave great advice) care for your machine before you come to the track, so be sure everything is top-shape (brakes, tires, no leaks, cracked windshields, etc) and ready to run. Then, probably more importantly, be sure YOU are in top-shape, since the machine's only able to perform to YOUR limits. Eat, get rest the night before, bring *plenty* of fluids and munchies to last the day (you can/will get exhausted and dehydrated if you're not prepared with water & food). When you get fatigued, pull off the track, rest, cool down, eat, rehydrate, BS a bit, relax and watch other people (esp their lines, etc) and then when you're ready, go back out and do it again. Staying rested and hydrated makes you more alert, which means you're a safer driver, and that's good for you, your car, and everyone else. Quote:
Since I'm new to this track and still new to my STI, I won't be pushing it. I'm going to learn the track, learn the car, and learn anything else I can to plan for the next track day, and the next, and the next. And as Diz said, I'd air up my tires, and bring a pump and good gauge in your tool box to vary pressures as you need. Track pressures are typically way higher than street (I'll probably run 40psi or so if that gives you an idea). So, try to make this one, I'd like to meet everyone in the flesh, and maybe plan out our next NASIOC Track Day while we're there. Oh, and AutoX (SCCA) will be at DIA on the 16th (Sunday). For now, let's just see you guys @ the Track WEDNESDAY! |

Can I watch, maybe be a passenger, anyone?
Well, I just got my Wrx not long ago. Have barely driven it. I might head down just to watch you guys tear it up, and meet some of you. I would like to eventually track my car someday, but am kind of intimidated by it. Would anyone be willing to let me ride along? If its cool, what would PMSP charge if I was just a spectator?
Also, what time are you all planning on being there? Dan |

Dan,
AFAIK, it's free to spectate from trackside, and it's free to ride-along with a paid driver--you'll still need a helmet though. However, you shouldn't feel intimidated by trackdays, they are *not* races; they're just a chance tofind out what you and your car can do in a safe, controlled environment. You don't have to "push it" just because you're on a track. Think of a track day as a great mountain road, just without blind corners, school buses, gravel trucks, RVs, and idiots backing out of driveways. The point is, go at your own pace. This will be my first time at this track in my new STI, so I know I won't be setting a blistering pace. If you think you're too slow, just pull off the racing line and let anyone behind you go by, then get back on your pace. It's no big deal, especially since with open track days there will be huge differences in driver skill, experience, and car capabilities. You may have veteran SCCA champions running their fully prepped race car on the same track as some kid in his mom's Taurus, so everyone just has to run their own pace and not worry about the other guy. So, as to the ride-along, it should be free, you'll need a helmet, and then someone to let you ride shotgun. Most people who were interested in tomorrow have backed out, so it may just be me and 1-3 people from the dealership going, plus the 3+ that have already signed up at PMSP. I may or may not have a passenger already, depends on who's going. If my buddy goes, he should have his passenger seat open, and though I can't speak for him, I don't think he'd mind (just don't puke in the car ) Also, if you're interested in getting on the track, it's never a bad idea to get a ridealong first, see how the other guy does it, try to learn, follow & observe, then go get your car and get on the track As to the time...not sure. I wanted to be there right as they open, but I'm in Denver, so it's ~2hrs to the track from my house, which would mean leaving super early. So I may not get there until 10a-12p if I have to wait on other drivers to show up. I'll try to post tonight once I know who is, and who isn't going. I get off work at 9:30pm, so it'll probably be late when I post (11pm or later). See you there! (and bring munchies ) Quote:

Bummer, if the track wasn't so far from utah, it would be worth a few hours drive for the cheap price. Maybe I'll make a road trip later this summer!

This is some really good info, guys. I am sorry I can't make it tomorrow (too short of notice to get a day off), but definately sometime this summer I'll be out there with you guys.
In the meantime, I'll be at the autox's that are held at World Arena. Look for a dirty PSM 04 STi with gold wheels, 42 STU! |

Foxy-
It was pretty fun, though since everyone bailed I ended up being the ONLY stock/closed-wheel car on the track. You guys left me to fend off 3 SCCA Formula cars (2 Formula Fords & 1 Formula Atlantic) in my relatively heavy, slow, stock STI --so, needless to say, I got to play back marker/lap traffic all day. There were so few cars that halfway through they opened it up to bikes since some local club showed up, so we each ran 1/2hr sessions. Cars on the top of the hour, bikes on the bottom. All in all, for the day, I probably should have brought my track bike instead The track's smaller & tighter than I'd imagined for a 2.2mi course. Or, maybe I'm just too used to the bike, where 23' wide tracks seem huge. In the STI the track felt small, with tight turn-ins and heavy, heavy braking--my fronts are hammered while my rears are 90% untouched. (Plus, I admit I was driving the STI too much like it was a 363lb/600cc bike, and I'll need to adjust my driving style in the future to compensate for the big, heavy piggy of a 3300lb car on a tight course. ) The weather was great (83!) until the very end, at 3:45 or so it began to sprinkle and the winds picked up. I actually brought my camera but forgot to charge it, so it was dead weight the wole damn time (D'oh!). Maybe I'll take a pic of what's left of my fronts to give you an idea of the cornering/braking loads I put on the front. Oh, FWIW, leave the DCCD in Auto, at least for me, I was quicker and there was less push out of exits when the DCCD'd throw more power to the fronts to pull you out. In full-rear, you just pushed the front wider than you'd want (and also scrubbing the tires more in the process). The track was too tight to really get the rear cranked out drifting sideways to compensate. YMMV. Overall, it was OK. It definitely would have been more fun had more people been there, especially some other Subies/NASIOCers--something other than 1700lb, 350HP open wheel Wings&Things cars that just made me feel like I was a beached white whale. I'm definitely up for trying again, and trying to get more people to go. We just need to see what days the track has available, and try to pick one far enough away to get people together for it. Also, they run FAASST Racing Schools @ the track, the schools can be for Driver Improvement or for actual SCCA Licensing, www.faasst.com has the details and dates. Judy, who runs FAASST, (retired SCCA Formula Ford racer) was actually there learning to ride an R6 on the track, and she said she'd cut NASIOCers a 15% discount and/or we cold organize a day with her if enough people wanted to do a school. Anyway, if anyone wants to organize another track day, just let me know... |

That stinks that you were the only one there I'll go sometime, and you'll feel like Schumacher as you lap me repeatedly
So your STi is completely stock? That's encouraging, to me, except for the tire news. I can't really afford to kill tires in one track day, as much fun as it would be. I guess I'll have to get some summers mounted up and just take it easy... |

Lol, probably not I'm learning the STI, on my bike, different story Quote:
Bone stock except for Happi Motoring Fender Braces and some home-made screens over the lower fascia opening & I/C to keep rocks out of the cooling fins. Tires: I was running the stock RE070s, which are only 10k mi tires at best, and I wasn't driving with a tire-friendly style. If you ran at 8/10 and don't drive like me with a ham-fist and heavy brake you'll be fine. The track is tight, but a smoother driver than me would have much more tire left, and far less wear than what I did to mine. You could always check the classifieds here and/or eBay and try to pick up a cheap set. I got some 3k mi take-offs for less than $400 for the set of 4, and I can get probably 3-5 track days out of them even with my driving style (which sucks). I'll update the main thread, since the next available days are out--April 18th (Open Track) and May 5th (*trying* to get 10 to reserve full track for NASIOCers). Seeyas there! I'm going to do my best to be at the May 5 one with some summer tires and a helmet
Two more questions! 1. I know that some drag strips won't let you run with a cracked windshield. This past weekend, I picked up a small rock chip and had it repaired, but you can still see the crack (roughly 1/2" long). Will this disqualify me? I just replaced the windshield 5 months ago for $300.. would rather not have to do it again :-/ 2. Is the $120 per driver, or per car? |

Awesome, see you May 5th then!
Looks like we'll have 5+ going on the 18th, so that's better than just lil' ol me out there with the friggin open-wheel racers. I know they won't let you run with a visible crack in the driver's area of view, but they also are very (perhaps *too*) relaxed @ PMSP and I've yet to see them do a vehicle inspection--they leave it up to the drivers. So, if you're comfortable running with it, go for it, save the money for gas & tires. Price is per driver or car if you have a passenger ride free, but if they drive, they have to pay. See you then!
