I already have a cat back though. I don't imagine that xcceleration sells their pieces a la carte.

Is there a front strut brace that will work on a 05 baja turbo ?

My friend has a Baja Turbo and he bought his exhaust system from Xcceleration in pieces. First the dp/mp then the catback. so they do sell the pieces separately....if that helps.

The Cusco bar is a guaranteed fit, even with a bigger top mount intercooler.

Okay, I just purchased a VF39 and an STi intercooler. It was a deal that was way too good to pass up.

So, the intercooler came with no BOV or couplings. Can I re-use my stock BOV or do I need some sort of upgrade? I would prefer to stay OEM. Anything else that I will need to know in order to make the intercooler work?

You will need an STI or wrx bypass valve. make sure it has the metal elbow attached to it. You will also need the hose that goes from the bypass valve to the intake. The one you need would be from an STI.

Thanks Hawk. I actually have the Y-pipe, the 90 degree pipe that comes off of it (red with metal insert) and the silicone sleeve that goes to the intake. I think that I just need to find a bypass valve. Are the WRX and STi parts the same?

And just to confirm, my stock Baja bypass valve is not transferable to the STi intercooler. Correct?

that is correct, The Baja turbo bypass valve is a different flange and wont physically bolt up. The hose also points in the wrong direction.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I am in the market for an STi bypass valve.

Any other gotchas that you can think of?

Did the STI intercooler come with the y-pipe? you will need to use the STI Y-pipe.

Also, I found that I had to shim the intercooler (USDM STI) with a few washers under the rubber mounting grommets to tilt the rear of the intercooler up higher. The Y-pipe (1 piece metal on mine) would contact the cap of the clutch reservoir and make vibration/ clunking sound in reverse as the engine torqued to the side.

The small vac. line to the bypass valve can be reused but as I mentioned you need the hose from a 2.5 wrx or sti to go from the bypass valve to the intake. an EJ20 wrx line wont clear the throttle body and the baja one is made to connect on the other side and at a different angle on the bypass valve.

stock: notice the bypass valve hose exits on the drivers side near the top

my 05 Baja turbo with STI intercooler, notice the bypass valve hose exits on the bottom angled towards the passenger side.

Thumbs up

This is tremendously helpful Hawk! I really appreciate the photos too.

I think that I have everything that I need with the exception of the bypass valve. I'm debating whether to wait until I install my VF39 in the spring or if I want to put it on now.

Those of you running STi or larger intercoolers, what modifications are you making to the splitter and inside part of the hoodscoop?

BTW, I just picked up a stock BPV from a WRX. Hopefully that takes care of things.

I removed mine, some people have taken two of the rubber ducts and cut/spliced them together. I actually took an STI duct and made an adapter plate out of sheet metal to fasten the duct to the metal splitter under the hood but I never put it on.

Be creative, so far I have had no problems running without a duct, but it probably isn't as efficient as it should be though. As far as the metal splitter/plate underhood, there are not many options.

WRX BPV should work just fine. did you get a new gasket too? don't forget the hose either.

Pretty much what I was thinking on the splitter. Nothing available off the shelf, so be creative. Whatever I do will certainly be more efficient than running the tiny stock one. Besides I will only be running a PnP VF39, so nothing insane.

As far as a new BPV gasket goes, I'll just buy one from the local dealership. They're pretty cheap. What hose are you referring to? I have the red 90 degree hose with the metal piece in it that goes to the turbo, the black sleeve that goes to the throttle and the metal y-hose on the backside. Honestly I have not stuck my head under the hood yet, so I'll do more of an inventory then.

The hose I mentioned earlier is the one that connects the outlet from the BPV to the intake. An STi one will work, as will one from an 06 or later wrx (2.5L). because the Baja turbo and wrx bypass valves have outlets on opposite sides, the hose needs to be changed to fit. It should be pretty straightforward when you look at it.

I made this awhile back which might help you conjure up some shroud ideas. It is 1/8" aluminum. It is hard to see the finished product in the last picture but I welded a plate at an angle to force air down onto the intercooler. Works great. This is of course on my 05 STI but I will be doing the same thing on the baja.

\

Please ignore the next to last picture as I have no clue whose car that is.

Just to confirm, are we talking about part number 5 in this diagram or something else?

Also the BPV that I was able to get my hands on is from a bugeye, is that going to work? I appreciate all of your help on this. Thank you!

negative, part 5 on your baja can be reused without issue.

Part 1 in that diagram is the one you need. the bugeye one (listed as <205> in that diagram will NOT work. you need one for a <257> (-05MY) or <255,257> (06-MY) the bugeye and 04/05 2.0 wrx had a cable operated throttle body while the 04- later sti and the 06 and later wrx had an electronic throttle body. the 2.0 bugeye hose will not fit around the bigger electronic throttle body even though the BPV is the same.

Gotcha, part number 1 was my second guess. The good news is the BPV that I have will work, I just need to buy the correct hose. I may just buy a new set of Samco silicones and replace them all.

Again, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge on this.

I would use a stock sti bov. you have to double check that year is compatable. I have a 2005 sti bov with no problems.
