Towing an Impreza?
I am looking into buying a 99 2.2L manual Impreza wagon that was towed around behind a motor home. Would this ruin anything on the car considering its all wheel drive? If so would it hert it if it was riding on the rear wheals, front wheals, or flat on all four wheals? Or non of the above. I only ask this because another member on the forum seemed to think this would ruin the car.
If it did ruin anything how would I tell if it was broken? Please help ASAP! For I might buy this car this weekend. Sorry for the newbie questions. I am new to the AWD seen. Thanks for your help. Dan

Manual AWD imprezas can be towed:
1) all wheels off the ground (flatbed, trailer) 2) all wheels on the ground, transmission in neutral (and obviously handbrake off) If it was towed by method 1, I think the only extra wear would be on the springs and struts. If it was towed my method 2, then most of the drivetrain would have all the towed mileage on it as well. If an AWD manual transmission Impreza is ever towed with 2 wheels on the ground, say goodbye to the transmission, and stay away unless it gets fixed. |

dont buy it. awd cars must be towed by a flatbed or be pulled with all 4 wheels on the ground. Are you sure its awd?

dont buy it..rear diff and transmission internals are probobaly not to healthy. always use a flatbed to transport and AWD or 4WD vehicle or if you are towing on the ground make sure the car is in neutral and e-brake is all the way down

No, not yet. He is trying to find that out for me right now. He is supposed to call back soon to let me know. He seamed to think it was ok to tow it on two wheals as long as it was in neutral and ebrake off but what does he know

Yah, the owner is trying to find out how it was towed right now. If it was towed on two wheels I won't buy it.

I just found out that the car was in fact towed on all four wheels so everything has checked out. I am going to do a carfax on the car and as long as everything comes out clean there I will be heading over there tomorrow!

Sorry but this is a bit confusing, the owner had to find out how it was towed? if they were not the one towing them i would be more worried since it was in fact someone elses words over the owners.

He knows the previous owners that returned the car to him and is now just trying to get his money out of it. All you need to know is I have dotted all my eyes and crossed all my T's on this one. I did a carfax report on it and it was clean as a whistle and the guy seems like a good guy talking to him. So I bought a ticket for a bus to ride over there and he is meeting me in Tacoma. So as long as I don't find any problems test driving it I will have myself a super sweet 99 impreza wagon! Talk to you guys Monday on how it all went. Be praying that everything go's well.

If they blews a trans or locked a diff I doubt it would appear on carfax to let you know. And no one here is telling you not to really get it, just the fact of letting you know be prepared that issues could lie in the cars future.
ps- i have talked to alot of people in the buying / selling marketplace and even a pig can put on a wig and some lipstick to look sweet. so be careful |
