Default new here, what can i do to a base model impreza

I'm thinking about getting an 08 or 09 impreza. Not the wrx just the base impreza. What upgrades can I do and how good can I make it? Can it be made as fast as an sti? I'm new to subies to keep is as layman's terms as you can and also if you could tell me what kind of cash id be looking at putting into it to make it sick. Thanks

yo answer your question yes. With enough money you can prob swap out the whole drivetrain for the sti, but it would be more expensive than just buying the sti in the first place.

If i only was able to get that model and wanted to mod it i would stick with some easy suspension upgrades to make it feel a little better on the road, and maybe some better looking wheels and tires (tires will have a big impact on your vehicle performance)

best thing to do is figure out some specific goals and how much money you can budget for it then kinda go from there. It will be a little easier after we figure that out.

Welcome to the forum!

OK sounds reasonable. Well is it possible to do like headers, cold air intake, exhaust, twin turbo, suspension, and maybe a few other things? I don't necessarily have to be as fast as the sti but I just want something quick and fun maybe something to race on.the freeway a bit and not get my ass whooped. I would get the wrx but the insurance is too much for me

Also, is it possible and if so what would it take to make.it a stage 5 twin turbo?

Unfortunately you thought wrong.

But I agree with other posts that it is not at all cost effective to try and make a base impreza like an sti. It cost WAY too much money. I understand the insurance thing, however most companies don't look past 3 years for accidents/tickets. So enjoy your car for now. Do some suspension and maybe some visual upgrades like wheels, tint etc. You can even put on a catback so you can enjoy the boxer rumble with the rest of us. But it is not worthwhile to turbo it unless you plan on dumping lots of money into it.

I know it is not the kind of answers you were probably looking for but it is what it is. Welcome to the forums, there is plenty of knowledge here. Enjoy the suby.

Wait, if you got the cash (or plan on getting it) to mod a base impreza why are we not getting a WRX or STi to begin with?

The insurance might cost you an extra 100-200/year for an STI vs an impreza. The cost to make an impreza truely as good as an STI will be probably about 15-20k.(engine, turbo, engine management, intercooler, suspension, brakes, transmission, differentials, etc in parts alone.) Add in someone else doing the engine swap and transmission swap axles etc your in for another 5k in labor. So the base impreza costs 18k and the STI costs 34k. You are probably not going to keep the car more than 5-6 years, but you could keep it for 10. You will save about $1000 on insurance and end up paying about the same if not more for the car. Your resell value on that modded impreza will also be about what an impreza is worth so when you sell it your going to only get maybe 10k for it after 5 years of ownership, when the STI would be worth 20-25k. that's another 10k loss.

So lets do the math Impreza modded to be an STI = 18k(purchase)+15k(mods)+5k(labor)+10k(resale loss vs an STI)-1k(insrance savings)=47k.

STI = 34k.

Modded Impreza costs 13k more than the STI.

What will happen in reality is you'll just get the base Impreza toss on an intake and an exhaust get bored and trade it in. Or keep it as a DD for a long time, but never come close to STI or even WRX performance.

This x 1000.

Get the WRX or STI and save yourself from any regret down the raod. If you wish to mod in the future its the right thing to do. Just don't do stupid **** like street race or drive 60 in a school zone and your insurance will eventually come down.

the money you will spend on modding it to that level will completely offset the money you spend on insurance. I would just look into a good used wrx to mess with if you are trying to get a car to that level.

how old are you? I remember i had a 2002 wrx when i was 20 and paid like 100-120 a month full coverage i think but that was a long time ago.

Stage 5? Why not just go for a stage 7 with quad turbo? That's what I'm currently doing to my car. It's gonna be dope yo!
