Default 04-06 STI short block= 08 STI short block

I've been trying to find out if the 08STI short block is the same as the 04-06 STI short block but I haven't found anything. So does anybody know if they are or what the diffrence is between them. Any info would great.

Thanks

The short block casting, or the full assembly? As far as I know the casting is the same, but the full assembly isn't. I believe the pistons and rods are the same, the crank is nitrided (or was that the 09? I forget), and the oil pump is larger for the dual AVCS.

09 sti block cylinder walls a slightly thicker.. I think by 1mm.

When i measured 04-07 it was about 9mm thick, 09 i thnk is 10mm. (should have wrote this **** down)

obviously as above 09 crank is nitrided because subaru either stopped or decreased using lead in some bearings (environmental speel)

Subaru also changed the casting process in 2007. Went from the 702 to the 703.
The 703 Castings are allot smoother inside the passages, making them more efficient to fluid flow internally.

also you will have to decide on which oil pump to use because it does not come on a new shortblock.

+1 on the 07+ motors having smoother castings. They is a very noticeable difference when comparing to older motors, much less burrs and sharp little edges. Theoretically those things can lead to the beginning of a stress spot, and are often where failures/breakage happens if it does.

07+ 2.5 turbo blocks also have two crankcase breather ports. The primary one next to the turbo for the PCV system, and a second on the block is below the throttlebody.

As I understand the 04-06 only has the primary PCV breather.

Edit: opps double post...
All of them have the 2nd breather, it's just the 2.0 that only has one.
