Default Help!

Hi, all. 2016 Forester here.
While attempting to change my oil, I accidentally opened the wrong drain plug, and got about 2 quarts of some unidentified green fluid. I want to believe it's antifreeze, but it was nowhere near the coolant tank. In fact, it was right underneath the tranny (I think). Needless to say, I'm in a bit of a bind and dont know what to do about it. Any help would be appreciated.

You drained the CVT fluid from the transmission. You can only get the fluid from the dealer only. It has to be filled on a lift at a specific temperature otherwise the transmission will granade. Have it flat bed towed to the dealer, pay them to correct the fluid level. Do not drive it low on fluid.

first time i'm hearing this, could you elaborate? seems to me people get the cvt fluid and fill up themselves through the fill plug.

@Max1994: you drained the transmission oil, this mistake is more common than you'd imagine. DO NOT drive the car.

Procedure I found elsewhere.

A- Jack the vehicle up,with all four wheels off the ground. It must be level.
B-Open the fill plug on the trans, located on the drivers side of the trans.
C- With engine off, start filling the trans with fluid until it starts to drip out the fill hole.
D- Replaced the trans fill plug.
E- Start the engine and placed the transmission selector from park,to reverse,to neutral then drive. Then place the selector from drive to neutral
to reverse and finally park. Shut the engine off and continue to refill the trans until fluid leaks out the fill hole. Replace trans plug.
F-Use a thermometer to make sure the fluid approx 100 degrees F.
G-Start engine. Run the trans through the gears as stated in E. Carefully remove trans. fill plug and continue to fill with CVT fluid until it runs out the fill hole, then stop filling and let any excess fluid drain out . Use the thermometer
to check fluid temp ,once it reaches acceptable temp. replace fill plug.
H- Remove jacks and test drive car, listening for any noises and or
feeling any shutters or jerks from the trans.
I - If you feel or hear anything new with the operation of the trans, go back
and jack up car and recheck your work.
J- You have completed the procedure, lets hope you dont make that mistake again.

So lets assume you have 4 Jack stands, a mini carpenters level, an IR thermometer, 4 qts of GenII CVT fluid, and a brand new un-comtaminated suction gun, and you're comfortable being under your vehicle while it is running.
There are now about 6 plugs on the back and sides of the trans, witch one is it that the fluid goes in?

Or pay $50 bucks for the tow (or free of you have AAA or Insurance towing) and pay the dealer for an hour labor (est.$125) and a few qts of fluid. Then if you have a warranty issue with the trans you can show that it was properly filled.

Service Procedure:

CVTF level changes along with CVTF temperature. When inspecting CVTF level, observe the specified CVTF temperature.
Always use specified CVTF. Using other fluid will cause malfunction.

1.Idle the engine to raise CVTF temperature to 35 - 45°C (95 - 113°F) on Subaru Select Monitor.
2.Operate the select lever in P ***8594; R ***8594; N ***8594; D and D ***8594; N ***8594; R ***8594; P to circulate CVTF with the engine idling.
3.Lift up the vehicle while the engine is running.
4.Remove the under cover front ***8208; transmission.
5.Remove the filler plug.

Pay special attention to the following operations as the engine is at idle.

CVTF is at the specified level when it is up to the filler plug hole lower section.
6.When there is no CVTF leakage from the transmission, add the specified fluid up to the filler plug hole lower section.

Note that when CVTF is added up to the lower section of filler plug while the transmission is in cold condition, overfilling of CVTF occurs, causing the oil to spill out.
7.Install the filler plug.
Use a new gasket.
Tightening torque:
50 N·m (5.1kgf-m, 36.9ft-lb)
8.Install the under cover front ***8208; transmission.
Tightening torque:
18 N·m (1.8kgf-m, 13.3ft-lb)
