WRX Transmission whine/tick
I've spent the past few days searching my heart out for a solution to my problem with no avail. Some similar, but not quite the same. I have some ideas of what it might be, but thought I'd post up my problem on here incase someone else has this problem. I will update the thread with a solution, given I find one.
Problem: Transmission whines/ticks when... -in any gear -most prominent in 4th and 5th -goes away when I put it into neutral and coast -quieter when decelerating -no volume difference when accelerating vs. constant speed. -no grinding noises -higher speed = higher volume of the whirring/whine Now, from that I have come to the conclusion that it probably isn't center differential related because when I push the clutch in at speed, the sound goes away (Center differential spins when wheels spin). I don't think it is the throw out bearing because at idle the noise is really quiet and doesn't change (that I can tell) when the clutch is pushed in. I'm not going to dismiss the throw out bearing being bad in addition to this problem though as it is still on the original clutch with 167,000 miles! Sound also does not change with load like it usually does when an input shaft bearing is bad. Suspects: Throw out bearing Input shaft bearing Noise is similar to this: Any information on this is appreciated. Thanks. |
