Wow.
I've had tranny whine with Audis (one tranny replaced, another had a bad input seal), but not with Subarus. I thought I had tranny whine once, but then realized that my kids were in the back seat.

Mine has always whined in 1-2, and it was much more pronounced when I added shifter bushings and a group n tranny mount. Has done it since day 1 when I picked up the car with 9 miles on it, and now I'm over 27,000 miles. Everything still feels great, it's just the car having some personality to it, is all.

Can you record or describe the noise better?

For mine, just go to youtube and look up and video of a wrx with straight cut gears. It's about the same in 1st and 2nd gear for me, maybe not quite as loud.
Some of the cars do it, others don't, and in the end I don't think it really matters. |

Mine definitely whines in 1st and 2nd, but not a "there's something broken" whine; it's just the way it sounds naturally.

Sounds like normal to me. Using different fluid or an additive might help but i wouldn't worry about it. WRX's are pretty noisy cars to begin w/and aren't exactly refined, but a damn good value for the money you spend. Reliable turbo AWD car with tons of upgrading potential for under 30g's? yes plz!

My car whines a ton in 2nd gear, does some in 3rd and I get almost nothing for the rest of the gears. When I let off the gas slowly in 2nd gear, my car jerks around like it's about to stall but it's actually pretty normal because out of three other WRXes I've test driven from 2011-2012, all of them have done that. Mine does seem to whine a bit more than my co-worker's 2012 sedan does but I think it's normal.

Don't get me wrong, my car has some substantial gear whine, but any manual I've driven has. The difference between this and the noise I've described is that is only occurs at high speeds in high gears, and gets worse when accelerating.
Since first noticing this issue, I've read through a number of different threads about wrx owners having this noise. Most of the threads go on to mention some part contained within the differential that had broken, chipped, or worn down. Some of the owners had new cars, but most had higher mileage cars. Since this is happening so early in the life of the car, it is believed that something in the differential has worn prematurely. Anyways, as mentioned, I will post a followup from my 2nd appointment with Subaru, which is on the 12th. When I find out what the issue is, I will let everyone know! |

Any updates, stratodyne?
As a new 2012 WRX owner (April), getting used to all these crazy power-train noises can be nerve-racking. Learning about all the different noises and diagnostic info related to it has become a bit of a hobby. Additionally, learning that your car sounds more like a freaking jet engine at speed is one of the many highlights. |

Dropped the car off a Subaru early Monday morning. I'm not sure if the location I deal with is completely swamped, or if they are poor at communicating with their customers, but I havent heard anything from them since I dropped my car off.
I called earlier this afternoon (around 4) and left a message, where I inquired on the status of my car. I'm going to call back again tomorrow if I don't hear anything from my service advisor. As soon as I hear anything, I will update this thread. It's only been a couple of days, but I seriously miss driving it. This Outback they've loaned to me is like a big, spongy landboat. My morning commute is uber boring |

Alright, so here is an official update:
A few bearings in my differential were found to have some slight scorching, and the positioning on one of them was found to be "off" (wish I had more detail on that). It was determined that some debris from assembly were leftover in the components, which mixed into the fluid. The debris increased the friction on the bearings, which caused the scorching. The good news is that all of the bearings in the differential are being replaced under warranty. The bad news is that I have to wait until Wednesday to get my car back, as there were two bearings that weren't in stock at the dealership. That's everything I've found out today when I received the call. I hope this helps some people in the future. At the very least, it helps to identify what is causing the noise. Anybody reporting similar noises may very well have issues with differential bearings. Thanks for everyone's help / support. I greatly appreciate it. If any additional information is received, I will update this thread! Last edited by stratodyne; 11-16-2012 at 12:34 AM. |

Demand new tires also. Since all 4 tires skidded, now there are flat spots on them.

Can't offer any help, but I'm glad to hear that you're safe and your quick thinking kept other motorists safe as well. Best of luck my friend.

^^^That too. I'd go for new diffs, axels and driveshaft as well if you can. Cite metal fatigue as your reasoning.
Edit: In relation to CrazyOC's post. |

Really sorry to see this, stratodyne. Glad you're ok. This actually isn't the first time I've seen this on a new WRX. There was another member who had his front axle snap and the suspension collapse. Maybe he'll chime in here if he's still a member.
Like drew said, keep us posted on the extent of the damage and how things go with getting the car back on the road. |

An small update...
Went to the dealer today during the afternoon. Talked with my service advisor, since the service manager was out for holiday. Was told that an official Subaru Rep will be visiting to question the dealer about the services that were performed, and also to inspect the car first hand. The dealer did an initial inspection of the vehicle and noted that the transmission is completely wrecked, and also saw the obvious sheared left rear axle. Dealer did not comment on what other components have or may be damaged. Was informed that I could expect to hear more details by Monday. After I do hear back from them, I will be contacting Subaru of America to see about potentially replacing this vehicle, as I can expect it to be out of commission for a few weeks, and may or may not be 100% repaired when it is returned. Again, I will continue posting updates as I hear more, and I appreciate all of the support you guys have given me so far Last edited by stratodyne; 11-23-2012 at 08:57 PM. |

That must have felt really epic when it all gave... glad you survived... hope everything works out. Must have sounded sickening to hear your car eat itself!

You seem to be handling this situation quite well considering what you just went through. Hopefully it will all get sorted and you'll be back in a subaru soon. I'd also push for a replacement car with similar miles or other compensation if miles couldn't be matched reasonably as I'd always have that experience in the back of my mind and just wouldn't feel comfortable in that car anymore.

I would push for them to replace all of the halfshafts and the rear differential while you're at it. If it was enough to break a rear half shaft I'd hate to think of what it could do to the others.
I really doubt it.... http://thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=epic |
