Anybody use symthetic oil?
Hi, I bought the wife a new '06 Tribeca Limited a couple of months ago and did the first oil change today. I used the regular oil the the dealer recommends this time in order to be sure the rings seal properly. I plan on switching to Mobile 1 10/30 from now on. I've had great luck with synthetics in the past and am just wondering I've anyone has heard of any downs sides to using it in a Subaru. I will be in big trouble with the wife if I were to bring any harm to her new baby.

Sync Mobil one
Hi,
well here the thing SUB's dealer told me that the idle is going to be little rough with Synt. Oil but I'm running the Mobil One for about a year and I have to admit that now rough idle. You gain little performance if car is empty. However, I have a feeling it takes little more gas. It's the way you drive it. I did what was recommended. First oil run to brake in period 3K miles and then Synt. Oil. No problem what so ever. I alwasy put the best gas and I always put Mobil or Exxon. Maybe little crazy but I have bad experience with cheap gas. Good luck Archee |

I wait till 10,000 miles then switch to synth. I've done this with the last 7 new scoobies I've owned and never had a problem.

I also change the oil every 4,000 miles. What do you think of going 7,500 miles, as per the owners manual. Good idea or not? I would appreciate any feed back. Thanks. Keep it under 90, folks. P.S. I am picking up a new Tribeca on Tuesday, those of you who know of me from the Baja Forum, now you know why. |

I make my first oil change at 1000 miles too. There is no break in oil though or no special oil that is, I just like to change it at 1000 then 4, 7 and at 10K I go to synth. Personally I think 7.5K is too long. If you really want to know how your oil is doing, send it to Blackstone for an analysis:

When i got my tribeca I put a 1,000 miles on it then switched to Mobil 1. I change it every 7,000 miles. My tribeca has 22,00 on it never any problems. Also just bought a new WRX I am going to follow the same schedule.

oil
I use Mobil 1 or whatever is on sale....
I change every 7K with the past 7 cars I owned... nare a problem nor oil use. I bought a fumoto valve.. for some $30... well worth the cost. The oil now drains in the catch pan... not all over the frame like the first two times. Wish I could find something to replace those plastic screw/bolts for the oil filter cover. It takes me more time to get them out then the oil change. |

I usually wait until my second oil change (about 4-5000 miles) before going to synthetic. As for the time interval, I tend to change at about 4-5000 miles for N/A unmodded cars. With the new oils today I'm sure they don't "break down" like the old ones. Plus, I always use the oem filter or Purolator (oem on the older Subies). Never Fram. I tend to stick with 10w-30 vs. 5w-30. My previous Subie (WRX) would use the 5w oil about 1/2 to 1 quart between changes. Not so much the 10w oil. All this, of course, is a matter of personal taste and experience.

An article in Consumer Reports a year or so ago stated that todays oils are so good that you needn't change them any more often than 7500 miles. I think that's why a lot of manufacturers have changed their tunes in recent years. I'm old school too...used to do it every 3000 miles. But heck, if I can more than double that number, why not?? I've never tried the synthetics....but have read a lot of good stuff about them. I don't see how they could do any harm, tho.
