Default Let's talk flywheels

Trying to find the best possible flywheel for my WRX. I have seen aluminum flywheels that way 9.5lbs and the chrome moly's seem to weigh about 1lb more. I assume the chrome moly will last longer then the aluminum would? What are the important things to look for in a flywheel? It it possible to go "to light"? Finally, what brands would you guys recommend?

I intend to get the new updated WRX clutch replaced under warranty and will slap in the aftermarket flywheel then.

I am using a BPM flywheel... I think its like 14lbs. Personally i'd not go with anything that was much less than that. There is a point where you can get into a flywheel that is just too puny for our cars. The best thing would be to find someone that has a upgraded flywheel in their car and see if they will let you drive it just a bit. At least that way you won't be shocked when the work is finished.

Thanks for responding Nathan. Unfortunately, I don't have a car to drive that is aftermarket flywheel equiped so I-Club is my only resource at this time

Why not go lighter then 14lbs? The Findanza's are 9.5 lbs. What negative affects should I expect if I went with a flywheel that was 9.5lbs compared to say the BPM at 14lbs? I can't see 4.5 lbs making that huge of a difference but apparenlty it must. I have heard parking lots speeds are most affect with the aftermarket flywheel. If someone could elaborate a bit on that please? What negative affects will I see?

Next time I will go with stock - the marginal increase in spool up is NOT worth the difficultly starting off in a smooth manner without stalling

my car starts fine....i think with the low compression of the EJ20 that anything less the 12 or so would make the car run kinda crappy, but then agian i thought my car wouldn't idle with the 9.6lb fidanza.

Alumnium Pros-
Lighter weight-quicker rev matching, more free horsepower
replaceable friction surface-can be replaced but is usually good for 1-2 cuts

Alumnium Cons-
More parts to break-bolts & screws retaining friction surface
starter ring gear held on by 4 or 6 bolts

Chromoly pros-
Lightweight
Rigid-made of one solid billet piece

Chromoly Cons-
Junk after 1-2 cuts it if can be cut at all
Starter ring gear is not replaceable so if it goes bad you get to buy a new flywheel

I just ordered me a Findanza aluminum flywheel that weighs 9.5 lbs. Will be curious to see how the car responds to the new flywheel.

I use the Exedy chromoly flywheel. It was inexpensive and works fine. 12 or 13 lbs. The stock one was a beast. I swear it must have weighed like 30 lbs or so. It was a porker. I have not noticed any downsides to the ligher flywheel. Revs up much faster. And the turbo spooled up faster too. Atleast till I smoked my motor.. That will be fixe soon though.

stock RS flywheel was just over 25 lbs IIRC.

I just got a call from my dealer, and they are covering the replacement of the clutch and fly wheel.

These items were so far down the list for me that I haven’t been thinking of them. But now that the labor is covered for the change, what would y'all recommend for aftermarket parts?

Once I get my Saab sold, the WRX will be my transportation. I plan on going to a few auto-x's and would like to help realize the fuller potential for performance upgrade. I don't want to go total race/rally car specs, would like to keep it comfy for a three hour trip once a month.


Help?

P.S. would I get flamed for posting this as a new thread? I don't have that much time to search topics that are semi relevant.
