Default New Engine choices

In a different thread, I mentioned that it looks as though I have blown a ring or something similar. At this point, I'm looking at putting in a new block - its the fastest way for me to get up and running again.

I have several choices - I found a twin turbo EJ20 for example, but I don't think it would work (custom exhaust?). I'm leaning towards an EJ20 turbo engine, closed deck. I can move all of my "stuff" from my current engine to that engine fairly easily (ie heads, water pump, A/C, etc....). This is also fairly inexpensive from a parts standpoint, about $700.

I plan on rebuilding my current block at some point - forged pistons, 2.2 stroker, etc (which is why I'm not just getting the current block fixed and put back in).... but for now, I need to get into something that will give me the same power without a lot of down time, for not a lot of money.

Any other ideas?

Man you have good sources - How do you get an EJ20 with a closed deck for $700?

You have access to a twin turbo EJ20? I would make that work

The only engines I know of are in AU and from Cobb tuning (5000 plus core charge!).

GOOD LUCK.

Well, they are used

The older WRX engine was a closed deck 2.0L engine. These are definitely not new engines for this price obviously

paul ecklund usually has factory rebuilt legacy ej22t engine blocks for about $900. you're probabally aware of this.

Yeah, I did know about those, being he is local. I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the 2.2l is a SOHC engine though, and I doubt it can handle as much boost as say a 2.0L stroked.... or am I off base?

you are right. it will handle slightly less boost. but will make more horse power w/ less boost. stock they only run between 7-9 psi because they were not intercooled. a stock wrx intercooler will fit w/ some modification. but I love the low end torque of these engines compared to the ej20. there is alot of potential with these engines. plus they are a closed deck design. hope this helps some. in the legacy forum you can find more info if you'd like.

Low end torque is great (I used to be a big mustang fan) but I'm not giving up my 19psi of boost... just ain't gonna happen.

I found the engine I've been looking for - MY01 Japanese WRX engine. Has everything on it, including the flywheel, turbo, and A/C compressor for $1K. Has less than 30k miles on it, and the importer says it probably has a LOT less than that, because it looks like it hasn't even hardly been used. I doubt that, but as long as its as strong as the current block, it'll be a good replacement until I can figure out what I'm going to do longterm (ie rebuild my current block with forged parts that can take the abuse).
