Hope it was no one here.....just be careful!
I've often searched the auction sites for Baja's and it's very seldom that I find one where the passenger compartment has been invaded. I just hope it was no one on the board.......actually just wish it was no one period! Have fun but be careful. These serve as a really good reminder for me.

That is pretty crazy! It looks as if whatever hit the car (or they hit into) did so with enough force to rip the spot welds apart. I wonder if they tried to beat a truck or a train?

if i'm not mistaken that should buff out.
seriously thats a mess. if noone was in the back then the driver area looks ok. thats not to say they lept out and did the can-can just it looks servivable(?). if you could get it for a couple hundred the engine should be ok so the start to a swap. |

Hah! Greetings from Bloomington. If you ever see a red/silver turbo w/ SnugTop and lights send me a wave! Plates on the front read MOONZIE too.
Wow... I just looked at it. I don't think I've ever seen any Subaru look quite like that. eek.. but I like the Repair Cost: $28,814 USD. Last edited by moonzie; 11-16-2009 at 10:36 AM. |

oh there is salvage there..... if it was dirt cheap, the grill, the fog covers, a full size spare stock rim, hitch, door and tailgate latches, headrests and some dash trim are all great things to have spares of to try out DIY mods on... and if you mess them up, or don't like the results ... well you're not out much and didn't even take anything off your baja.

The part I'm missing on my Baja I don't see on this one either. It might have gone flying off somewhere. I'm missing the gray outside cover that goes on the gastank door. I would LOVE to get that replaced since right now it looks on with the inner yellow metal.

I don't see why it wouldn't.
I've got a full-size spare on a steel wheel hanging under mine. I did have to spread the bars on the edges of the tire holder very slightly to help it fit. And last time I had to drop it I lowered the support cable to find that the tire didn't come with it lol, I had to reach under and give it a nudge to free it. Anyway, I can't see why the stock rim wouldn't fit, as long as there is a hole in the center of the hub for the cable end and metal support to fit through. Is there a center hub that pops out of the stock wheel? |

I tried one under my 03 and the thing hung down so low that it bottomed out on me (tire width issue, not total circumference....
Also, talked to a Subie mechanic. The cable system is designed to support the weight of the donut, not a full size spare (heavier). Plus, if it dropped off while driving down the road and it caused an accident, you might be liable I am told, since it was an non-original modification and unsafe. I decided the best idea was to just carry the full size in the back or in my roof rack, when on long trips. Otherwise I don't mess with it. Just my $0.02 worth..... Quote:

Thanks guys! I appreciate the feedback; didn't mean to hijack the thread but I've been curious about this and didn't find much in a search. I didn't think about the weight being an issue. Good advice. I"ll take a looky at the center of my spare...sad to see another crashed Suby. I always hope those inside were ok.

In my case, it hangs no lower than my hitch, actually, it's probably higher than the hitch. Quote:
That said, of course that would be the official word, I mean crap, you should see some of the BS lawsuits that car manufacturers have to deal with. Half of my family consists of engineers, who tell me the industry design standard for things like this are 3x the maximum anticipated force. i.e. a part is designed to hold up to 3x the amount of force it is expected to see under the most extrem conditions. Maybe I'll weigh the two tire and wheel assemblies back-to-back next time I pull the spare, but I highly doubt it weighs more than 3x the original near useless donut. And as my story illustrates, even after dropping the support cable the tire remained behind supported by the interference fit with the bars around the carrier, so the cable isn't even holding all that weight. Hell, it's a freakin' steel cable, do you know how much force it would take to snap it? Much-ado-about-nothing YMMV |

You're probably right, but frankly, in lawsuit-crazy California, I was not willing to take the risk. I like my paid-off house too much! It just isn't that important an issue for me to have it there.....

It's a shame that we, as a society, have gotten so ridiculously carried away with lawsuits and liability.
That said, I unfortunately understand your reluctance. Hmmmmmmmmmmm I betcha if one was REALLY worried about it, they could run a nylon strap around it and part of the frame to keep it in place should the cable fail. The only downside if that should you ever need the spare you'd likely have to crawl under (possibly in the cold or wet) to undo the strap. |

You know given I'd rather never use the doughnut, I've often wondered about making a replacement box to replace the spare. And put useful items in it, emergency supplies and such.

I wonder what the approximate weight difference is between a full size and compact spare.

That will vary with the wheel - steel vs. aluminum - I'd expect the steel to be heavier, but they are also usually thinner so who knows for sure. Would come down to the actual wheels in question. |
