Full boost at 4k RPM and a huge nose dive in power after 6k RPM? That's not much of a powerband for this "godly" turbo

Please feel free to point me in the direction of any 18 or 20g that doesnt plummet fter 6k..

and full boost was @3800-3900

i honestly couldnt complain. heat soaked top mount and 80degree shop temp. The heat + an ~8.881:1 compression is gonna kill your top end..
0.02
a dyno# is a dyno number.
I admire its ability to hold above 17psi to redline..

Your thread is lacking detail. Fuel? AFR's? Elevation, etc..

Second pic shows afr and boost

19psi peak tapered to 17. Cut it off @ 19 due to top mount.
Afrs are 11.2~3

this turbo can hold 19psi easy to redline fyi.

my top mount is holding it back.
Tuner says front mount will up it to 22-23psi taper to 19-20psi.

Just another 2 months and Nasioc will see what this baby snail is made of
The project is progressing

OP, did your tuner comment on why power is dropping off? Usually on both the 2.0 & 2.5 power carries to redline.

Could this be related to the problems associated with the CC of the 2.0 heads on the 2.5 block?

I've pushed as much as ~30 psi through mine now above 5krpm on a 2.0.. The turbo can produce decent boost - But I have noticed that it is pretty cranky about getting a good fresh air supply.. On a dyno without a fan on the intake filter I couldn't build more than 23 ish PSI.. On the road with my intake sitting behind an open foglight, 28psi to redline was no problem. - And this was on the internal gate.

Well the ic was heatsoakked no doubt. None of my exhaust is heat wrapped.

The comp ratio in the ej257 is ~8:88:1. That's a big jump from 8.35?:1?

Bobby said that the dip up top is almost identical to his other tunes. Says the compressor can't. Keep up with the 2.5liter displacement demands. He said the 2liters will continue to clime because that turbo can supply them easily where as the td05 runs out of breathe up top. He said porting and polishing the heads and larger cams will eliminate that almost completely.
Another note he said was that they actually make more high end hp on the hta with unequal length headers. "The lower end torqque almost helps the engine climp up top.."
I'm gonna port my stock headers and pick up an up pipe to make comparisons sometime in the near future.
I've noticed the stock wrx longblocks are making even more on this turbo and the evoiii near the top and I believe its directly related to there lower compression ratio imho.
If you take a look @ some dyno graphs of the ej255 and ej257 the 255 really shines up high, where as the 257 with 2.0heads shines much better low to mid and begins to drop up near 6k~

All in all I personally believe. The ej257 hybrids aren't all there set out to be without bored out heads or a complete swap. The stock 2.5 sti long block would've mad 330 with my set up and I'm guessing no drop up top.

Let me know what you guys think...

Do you think my turbosmart mbc is effecting boost threshold.....? It is a cheap little thing LOL.

Check out the vid, tell me if there's anything out of the norm...

I remember someone said that the turbosmart mbc does not hold boost well, he recommended switching to the Hallman mbc. Everyone knows that the Hallman mbc rocks

So he's telling you that the compressor cant keep up with the massive 2.5L at 17psi.....but at the same time telling you if you get a fmic you can run 20psi at redline......

So you compressor cant keep up at 17psi....but if you add 10 ft of piping and 3psi the compressor gets magically better

And yeah.....it looks like that mbc sucks....i was going to ask how he got it to taper like that

Yeah that's why I was confused!???

I honestly think this dude gets you a big number and ****s off the rest of the tune.

How do ppl peak @ 23 and hold above 20 to redline
But I can keep boost above 18 to 5500....? Maybe a little heat soak but cmon..

What are they set out to be?

I mean I thought they came about because 2.0L owners wanted a little more daily driving off-boost grunt than a low compression 2.0L could give. A new 2.5L shortblock is right around the same cost as a rebuilt 2.0L, so when it came time to rebuild, just slap your heads on a 2.5L.

I don't think anyone created the hybrid with expectations it would perform the same as a true EJ255 / EJ257. Some people may have that expectation now, but I don't think it was ever billed that way in the beginning.
