I want to know how many parts are actually required from the donor car (and how that factors into the cost of $15k completed).
I have a busted transmission, 2 blocks, and 3 sets of heads in the basement. If that's all that's needed, sweet. I have a feeling there's a lot more pieces/parts I'll need.

Seems like junk yards should be full of crashed WRX's with parts/motors that will work. Wouldn't it also be pretty easy to get a blown motor and build it with stronger parts? There's no shortage of those around either. I bet it will be especially cheap for people who can do the work themselves. Probably lots of fun too. I wish I could do it

The design isn't done at all yet. FFR and Grassroots motorsports is holding a design competition starting on March 1st so anyone who wants to participate can draw up a design and submit it to them.
http://www.factoryfive.com/whatsnew/...ouncement.html I don't want this car to be a replica, I want this to have a modern design and a unique look. If anyone has been following FFR co-founder's Mark Smith's new project: The Smyth Performance Jetta-based mid-engine kit car "Go Fast But Go Green" You know that a somewhat similar concept has been publicly in development for nearly 2 years now using the MK4 Jetta as a base. http://www.facebook.com/SmythPerformance Given the low target cost of the FFR subaru kit, I imagine they will find a way to re-use the oem subaru transmission. Doing such would probably require removing or replacing the center diff. Ideally they'd use the front output shafts which would put engine placement where you'd want it, however the slip in the center diff and lack of LSD for the front wheels on a 5MT makes that unattractive. I'll be interested to see I'm excited for this kit, I would have loved an AWD lightweight kit car like an FFR made Murtaya http://www.murtaya.com/ However, the weight distribution for such a car would be terrible with a subaru-sourced awd system. M/R setup FTW! |

With a fairly simple space-frame design... you should be able to offer several body options, or as a customer, at use a mid-engined body of your choice.
Maybe FFR offers a modern original design, rather than a replica... but the chassis could be a great foundation for someone who does want the bones upon which to build a pseudo-replica of an unobtainium classic mid-engined sports car. |

Yeah, the open-diff isn't so hot. Looking forward to this. I'd SERIOUSLY consider this as an alternative to an Elise a weekend toy if it turns out looking ok.

No slip, because no center diff. Getting a front diff that works well wouldn't be tough (which you might as well do since the trans is apart). |

For the price point this car is targeting I'd expect some of the WRX suspension parts to be used. But seeing what FFR does on their other cars, I wouldn't be suprised if the kit used a SLA suspension. Just look at that their other kits include and what donor parts they require to get a better idea of what this kit should be like. I know whatever they do this car should be pretty damn nice to drive considering how well built their other kits are.

I saw similar posts over on ffcars.com (the NASIOC for Factory Five owners/enthusiasts), and it seems like support was roughly split between a Stratos-like design, and something more along the lines of an Ariel Atom, but Subaru-powered.
I've been plotting and planning to build a Factory Five MkIV roadster (Cobra) kit for a while now, just waiting on money and garage space, but if I could use my WRX drivetrain in a cool-looking kit, I could probably move the timetable up a year or two. |

I like the Stratos in some ways, but it would be an outdated style in a couple of years. Look at Lotus' new designs, the Stratos is similar but much too basic. I think that the new Lotus styling is the way of the future, not the Stratos. The Lancia Stratos(even the new one) almost looks to me like siblings of the old 4 cylinder Lotus esprit or a delorean.

Whoa....
FFR should do something that can be full-body clad. There already IS an ariel atom alternative with Subaru RWD mid-engined power. SDR Sports Cars, in the UK, has a variant of their car called the WR3 V-Storm. (not to be confused with the Suzuki V-Strom motorcycle) http://www.sdrsportscars.co.uk/home.html The Murtaya was full AWD drivetrain in the standard Subaru Layout, but ended up being kind of ugly, despite promising initial sketches. |

I agree with you, but there is less than 1% of the population that would know what a sweet car you had. The other 99% of the people on the road would think you were crazy for putting a body kit on a Miata.

1% would know, 4% would think its a body kit and the other 95% wouldn't care and couldn't tell a miata from an s2k anyway.

Awesome.
are kit cars like this crash tested? It'd be a shame to have one of these and not drive it on the track. |
