Default UOA: Mobil (not M1) 5w30

Here's the UOA for my 2.2L after 3700 on the conventional Mobil 5w30. Just putting it up because I don't see many conventional UOAs here especially for the n/a 2.2's.

They said the viscosity is a little low. Maybe PROOF that 5w30 does shear down in our engines.

The air filter WAS NOT clean with this batch of oil. It was about 9,000 miles overdue for a change, so they guessed right when they said I should check it.

Unknown silicon though.

No coolant!

Fuel wasn't a problem.

Switched to t6 yesterday though, so in a few oil changes or so I'll get a UOA on that.

Holy mackerel. Even your 2.2 sheared it pretty good. Your wear is good though. Here's a Legacy 2.5i 8k mile on the old Mobil Clean 5,000.

Looks like the sodium is an additive.
I would probably just use a conventional High Mileage oil in a 2.2. I'm running Pennzoil 5W-30 HM in a 2.5RS and intervals are 5-6k miles. Pennzoil conventional has higher detergent and anti-wear levels than Mobil.

Was that an OEM air filter?

Not sure if it was oem. If it helps it was all white in color. Well it would have been if it was clean, and not super old. I put about 10k on it, plus however many miles were on it when I bought the car.

As for the oil, I guess this UOA is proof that Mobil 5w30, whether it be synthetic or dino (like mine), shears down a good bit in our engines.

It's not unusual at all for any Resource Conserving 5W-30 (conventional or synthetic) to shear to a 20 weight in any car. The oil is pretty much designed to do that. Even Blackstone's "should be" viscosity starts at a 20 grade (9.1).

That's the funny thing about a lot of people freaking out about about new cars speccing 0 or 5W-20. Their 5W-30 is an xW-20 after a few hundred or thousand miles!

7.86 cSt? That's seriously thin, nominally 27% shear! The flashpoint looks good, indicating that the reduction in viscosity is actually shear and not fuel dilution. Scary stuff, there are plenty of 5w20s which would be thicker after 3700 miles than this 5w30. I'm not even talking high zoot group V Redline 5w20 either.

I have to disagree with Blackstone on the viscosity not being an issue, especially in an engine with a penchant for spinning main bearings. It would be really interesting to know the VI and HTHS of this used oil.

Yea. I'm interested to see how the t6 does on a UOA in a few oil changes or so.
