Default Anyone heard of a brake pad support?

My brother is trying to fix his 1984 subaru gl brakes. His book is telling him that the brake pad support is what needs to be fixed. Is there another name for this part or is he better off just buying the whole brake system? He has been on the eastern portion of North Dakota and has had no luck in finding this anywhere and is told there is no such thing.
Thank you, Stuck in North Dakota!
