Default My EJ18 turbo project

I posted this in Aftermarket Forced Induction, but it's a conversion too, so I'll see which forum likes it more and I'll just write in that thread. I'll start you out with a list of everything im running, its almost all stock WRX stuff.

WRX TD04 turbo
WRX exhaust manifold with gutted OEM uppipe
WRX turbo back with gutted cats
custom intake
Hallman's MBC
custom FMIC, using Starion IC and Tyfoon Motorsports Stage II BOV
Legacy turbo crossmember with WRX wagon swaybar
WRX waterpump
WRX fuel pump with RS adapters
S13 Silvia 370cc purple top injectors
Apexi SAFC modded to read MAP instead of TPS
EGT and air/fuel ratio guages
WRX Lamco boost guage

I might have missed something, probably. I'll add whatever I forgot.

Day 1: I started out by removing the whole exhaust from my car and then the intake. Then the oil was drained and filter came off. From there, I removed the cruise control, which was going to be in the way of the turbo. After that, the crossmember was next. We started off by removing the swaybar and the steering rack from the crossmember and dropping that down. Next, we took the nuts off the engine mounts. We then jack the front of the engine up a bit to drop the crossmember. One control arm had to be removed at 2 points to pull the crossmember out once it was all loose. Putting the new one in was the tough part. It all fits, but you gotta pry the engine back to get the mounts into the crossmember. It fell back into place, so the crossmember was then reassembled with all of its goodies, except for the steering rack which needed 3 new bolts to mount it up. From there, it was quittin' time.

Day 2: Started off by putting the new bolts into the steering rack, amd reattaching the lines and the steering shaft. Next I drained the coolant so we could remove the waterpump. After extensive examination, it was concluded that its a big project to get into removing the waterpump. So the covers started coming off the front of the engine and some of the belts that we're in the way came off too. It was close to around 11 and we had only been working for a couple hours, so it was time to stop and we would finish up the front covers the next day.

That brings us to present. Any questions or comments are welcome. This is my sleeper project and its pretty exciting, I've kept it pretty hush around the scene where I live.

why did you want to go with the 1.8? i can understand that it would be cheaper to keep the old block then to get a new motor but did you have any other reason?

good luck on the project.

well its less work to just keep the old engine in there. i also like the block, its a strong block. the only thing about it is the compression ratio, though the heads should hold up too. so maybe an EJ18 with rebuilt heads will make its way in eventually.

I am glad the turbo crossmember worked out good for you. I am wondering why you wanted to use the turbo waterpump, do you plan on using the oil to water cooler? The 1.8l ecu doesnt have any knock control so be careful

i swapped the waterpump so i could use the WRX exhaust manifold. since it goes around the front of the engine, the old waterpump got in the way. the WRX waterpump sits up higher and out of the way.

Alright, here it is....

Day 3: I started off by swapping the injectors. The Silvia injectors had to be modded a little to fit the harness and then they fit perfect. After that, we finished up the waterpump by taking off the crank pulley and getting under the cover. Once the waterpump was swapped, the belts went back on and the cover was put back on too. I then decided it was time to bolt up the exhaust manifold. So I got that sucker up in there, then I bolted on the uppipe. It looked nice, so I decided to sit the turbo in and see how that looked. There is so much stuff in the way there: two big harnesses and the PCV out of the crank. So it looks like I'll have to figure out something with that. It also looks like my 90 degree elbow for the induction won't fit with the manifold there. Also, where the intake compressor exits, there's lots in the way. I got a lot done for only about 4 hours of work. Tomorrow (Sunday) I work a good 11 hours, so I won't get anymore work on the car done until Monday, unless my dad does a couple things.

Ideas for your EJ18: I was thinking of doing this but opted to do the EJ20 swap.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=354468
I then wanted to bore the pistons out to the WRX size and buy the 2.2L stroker kit. So you would turn into a DOHC 2.2L WRX otherwise known to be a 22B with thicker piston walls= more PSI.
Hope this thread helps, Micah
you could also just bore it out and put in stock or upgraded WRX pistons.

i read that you just use a 0-5v sensor and hook it up in place of TPS on the SAFC, but i haven't gotten that far along yet

brent it looks like it's going to be crappy out today so I will most likely be over tonight to help put some stuff on. Or we can do some trouble shooting tonight with the harnesses.

when i first started, i think i was shooting to spend only about $900. i think i ended up spending around $1600 or $1700. when i'm done, i'll have to count up my receipts. the whole project was meant to be a budget project, but ended up not doing a hood and a top mount, so lots more money went into the FMIC setup.

Day 4: Just basically spent some time pulling stuff out or relocating it around where the turbo sits. The main stuff was trying to figure out an intake for the turbo, since it sits close to the intake manifold and it can't be ran under the manifold. That was it basically, just planning.

Day 5: Since I'm electronically retarded, I spent most of my time installing the SAFC. I had to order a MAP sensor to install, since my car doesnt have one. Thats been about it. I have my intake elbow coming in next week and the FMIC, swaybar, and oil inlet pipe coming in on Thursday.

Day 6: Well I pulled out the fuel pump and once I get the RS fuel pump stuff in the mail, I can hook it up with the WRX pump and put it back in. I also pulled off the front bumper for when the front mount gets here. Also, I made the custom guage surrounding for the boost guage, I'll have pics of that when it's all together. I think there was something else that I did, but I can't remember.

WOW!! I have been pondering this type of an idea in my head lately. Hmm, maybe instead of going for the JDM engine swap, doing this, who knows.
BUT still not much on the tranny, other than it'll prolly blow!!
Homemade WRX: Thanks for the link you posted, very interesting and highly motivating in Turboing the EJ18.

yeah, im worried about the life of my engine and tranny too. i think this winter im going to buy another 1.8 block and 2.0 WRX heads to use with that. I also wanna build a hybrid FWD tranny, using a FWD tranny but swapping in the internals from an RS tranny. we'll see how things work out.

Day 7: I got the new swaybar put on, just had a struggle with the links, which I'll just tighten when the car gets back on the ground. That's all I really did. I got my FMIC and MAP sensor in the mail, so I was surveying the FMIC and planning some piping.

Do you have any pics as the build goes on? I would like to see some, post some on here, or a link to an album you have somewhere

I'll work on getting a digital camera in the next couple days. As of now, it seems like there isnt much to take pictures of. It seems like half the car is torn apart. I'll still try to get one though.

Day 8: Fabricated the PCV lines out of the crank and cam shafts that will run into the intake. Wow, that doesn't seem like a lot, though it seems like I worked all day. Hopefully I'll get a lot more done in the next few days.

Wow, I hadn't checked this thread. That sounds like the setup on my project L. Good to know my Silvia injector idea is working on someone elses car. -Just some advice- It will benefit you to install some sort of RRFPR as well. I'm not sure if the AFC will be able to handle all fueling duties but I could be wrong. I used the RRFPR to get the fuel in the ballpark, then ironed it all out with the AFC. The car is decent, yours will be good with the front mount, my top mount setup dosent get much airflow cause the interccoler sits so far back under the scoop. The 1.8 is a decent little motor though, just has a small powerband. I think the low end would benefit from a smaller turbo.

Oh, one last thing, if you plan on boosting more than 5psi you MUST get a timing controller of some sort. I'm using the S-ITC. If you go to 8 for instance you might get det. I heard slight det up there even though my A/Fs were perfect.

yeah, i was definately gonna start looking into a rrfpr but right now i just wanna get the car put back together and running. i'm also gonna start out at 5psi, but i'd like to try to go higher, so i'll be looking into a itc. im not sure either if im gonna keep the FMIC setup, i may go to a TMIC eventually, but we'll see.

Day 9: Seemed like I spent most of the day just running around. I eventually was able to start doing some work. I put the radiator back in and go all of that fitted back together. I took off the valve cover and discovered that it'll be pretty hard to tap that for oil return, so the oil pan has become the only option. I also finally got the gallery plug off the engine.

WHP? who knows... less than 200 probably. Maybe 150-160 <shrugs>. I'll up the boost soon and dyno it so we can see. Man I've put a bunch of miles on it and it's still running perfect. Good 'ol L. I was looking at those pics... man it looked so good then... Now I use it to haul my jetskis so it's filled with that stuff and the front bumper paint is all coming off cause of shoddy prep work.
