Just spending a few days in Anchorage visiting friends.
Place is totally dope. Sort of a mix of things that I love about Portland but with a strong mountain vibe/presence.
I'm going to have to come back to see more.

Picked up a 2012 152cm Burton Nug Directional the other day and got a chance to ride it tonight at Snoqualmie. Thought I'd share my initial impression. Since its a nug board, this is supposed to be the equivalent of a 160-162 board. Bindings are the Union Contact Pro, which I really really like. Normally, i like to have separate bindings on each board, but i'm going to be moving these back and forth between this and my park board.

Conditions were super light snow over some hard pack with the occasional ice patch. On any of those ice patches this board has almost zero edge hold. Not sure if I'm just doing something wrong, but every ice patch had the potential for disaster. My Ultrafear does a pretty good job on the icey days so this board definitely isn't going to come out those days.

Outside of those ice patches I really enjoyed riding the board tonight. Not sure if its the design of the board or the wax job on it (i haven't waxed it myself), but it seemed to fly when pointed straight down the mountain. I also felt surprisingly confident pointing it straight down. I certainly don't have as much confidence straightlining my Ultrafear. Rode through a couple really choppy sections and the board seemed to take it and keep me moving in the right direction. In one section, I had to do a heelside traverse on a diamond run. I have trouble traversing on my heelside and this board certainly didn't help anything. I don't think it was any worse than on my other boards, but it definitely wasn't better.

One of the areas I was concerned about was getting pop off of the tail on a reverse camber board this short. A couple years ago, I had a 152 Skate Banana. For the short time I owned that board, I never felt like I could get enough pop off the tail. it just felt like the board was going to slip out from underneath me. I'm not sure what Burton did to the tail on this board, but I certainly felt comfortable trying to ollie off the tail. I don't think I get as much pop as on my Ultrafear, but the tail feels like its there and I just need to figure it out a bit more.

I'm looking forward to the next big pow day to hit (which sadly seems like a long time from now according to WA forecasts). Since this is supposed to ride like a 162, I might be able to downsize my quiver and get rid of my 162 Gyrator. I really like that board, but if I can get the same kind of float from a 152 board that would be awesome. I went off a drop tonight and landed about 5-6' down in knee deep. I was pretty worried the board would nosedive and I was going to go over the front. Surprisingly that wasn't the case and the board just floated to the top. The board slid out from underneath me on that landing, but I think that was more my own fault. I'm pretty sure I would've done the same on the Gyrator. So, the pow test will have to wait another day. I kind of hope it will be a heavy pow day so I can see how this board handles it. If it doesn't I'll keep the Gyrator. If it does, I'm going back down to a two board quiver with the Ultrafear for park and firm/no-new-snow days and the nug for everything else.

In short, I can really dig this board for how I ride. Anyone want to buy a 159 2010 Nitro Team Gullwing?

152 Nug eh? I had similar issues with the first Nug in the same size. I rode the 42 & 47 and found them MUCH more fun. How much do you weigh? I found a lot of my issues were because the 52 was too big for me.

The Nug is actually a pretty stiff board, it needs to be because of it's length. Nug "raduction" also thickens the profile in certain places. These two features also make the board feel solid at high speeds. I find that stiff boards tend to slip out from under my feet in icy conditions.

I hope you get the chance to ride it in powder. The v-rocker floats well, the short size makes it very nimble. Last season I had a 58 BSOD, 52 Ultrafear, and a 42 Nug. The Nug was my favorite board in pow.

Similar issue with edge hold? I'm probably close to 190lbs geared up.

This board is definitely a lot of fun. I like the idea of the 152 so I can use it on the big heavy pow days. There were a couple flattish areas that had about 2" of untracked snow. even in that small depth I could feel how the board just sat on top of the snow. it was pretty awesome. I really can't imagine it being a direct replacement for my Gyrator though. With the Gyrator, I no longer get the overworked back leg and pow days last much longer.

Maybe I'll keep the Gyrator in case I ever get out for a Cat trip. :P

Who rides on ice anyways?

Leaving on a back country yurt trip early tomorrow thru Tuesday. Conditions look great. About a foot of fresh and it looks to be bluebird. My new split setup (and my legs) is going to get worked out.

This is where we're going - https://threesistersbackcountry.com/

Cute.

Im the mass market most of the folks in that thread are talking about that just eats up the marketing. The thing is people in that thread kept saying the shorter boards will never stand up to big mountains. And if it's built like a traditional board, absolutely not. Line skis has this thing called early taper where the contact points are elongated. In theory this creates a longer effective edge. However you really need to commit to getting the skis on edge. The nug looks like it offers something similar and I think thats how they get away with the shorter size. plus you add in the spooned tip and tail some v-rocker and now you've got a lot more float.

The one logical argument in that thread I felt was how the side of would make it hard to traverse. Ive only done a couple ver short inbounds traverses and its definitely more difficult. however, I got better at it so it's a matter of adapting.

Also, I don't split board or venture BC much anyway. Ill be getting some alpy slack this year, but thats gonna be it. Was reading one of the avy books and it scared me enough to not be super interested in anything far out. Inbounds pow is good enough for me these days.

Meh, I think it's whatever suites your comfort or style man.
Everyone has a take on various boards. Possibly due to various styles.
I say whatever you dig on that allows you to open up and shred man.

Returned back to the cascades to blue skies.
Instead of pulling my normal solo riding I took my kid out and spent today showing him tree lines (not his normal thing). He ended up with grins all day, learned how to pump through powey sections to keep speed. He started picking better lines to help him sustain speed. He is a skier so he doesn't have to think about that as much as us. But I think he saw how I pumped and ride the mt differently.
It was pretty awesome seeing him on stoke.

Matt always posts craziness.
Looking forward to seeing some trip details.

I'm still looking at venturing down south.
Some of these prices look decent as they including tickets, lodging, and meals.
http://www.powderhounds.com/Ski-Shop...-Ski-Week.aspx

But I still think there has got to be a more economical route. I'm a bit of a cheap skate and don't need extravagant places to stay in. I can stay in almost anything (the last place in Mexico had roaches), and when I go to Africa I'm used to sharing the room with rats .

If anyone knows of any packages or has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

MattGT - looking forward to those pics. Also, is March or April a better time to go down to Bachelor? found a place to rent that is pretty cheap and might make the trip down there with a bunch of friends for 3-4 nights.

A very interesting field test of electronic interference from a POV camera when searching for a buried victim using a beacon.

Thinking of hitting Whistler for my 1st time in a week or two.
A friend of mine works on an airline so I get a buddy pass, will fly out of Seattle.

How do you guys get to Whistler from Vancouver? I may just do a single day trip but might wanna crash overnight some place cheap (hostels are fine) as long as it's not to far out of the way. Anyone have housing recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

I feel like it would be more of a hassle to go to fly from seattle to Vancouver and then catch a shuttle. Its about 3 hours from Seattle to Vancouver. Depending on how early you like to arrive for flights, driving would be faster.

I don't have any recommendations for staying up there though. As far as day parking goes, I kinda like Creekside because you get a parking garage. Your car isn't all frozen when you're done. buuut its also Creekside. not much après over there.

I get free flights, & they are only 40ish minutes. Get through customs and no border stuff. I may even just try to make this a day trip (but prob 2), so I don't want to drive at all.

So far I've found shuttle service from Vancouver to Whistler for 130ish and a hostel for 130ish including a lift ticket. But 300ish is still a lot to spend for a weekend and one day of riding IMO. I'm hoping to find a car pool and/or home to stay in on couchsurfing.org.

edit/add... Actually, Amtrack's $29 ticket each way does sound appealing for possible views. Anyone gone that route?

Now that I like the sound of. I wonder if you could make it a day trip on Amtrak. Bust out super early, shred all day, train ride home. Ive always thought about driving up and doing it, but I worry about falling asleep on the drive home. On a train i could just sleep.

The way the train/bus schedule works I think you would pretty much have to make it an overnight trip. Arrive late morning or sometime during the day, crash, shred the next day, and return late.

Still sounds fun though.

Hell yeah, great flick. Make sure to download it too from the Vimeo page! Stevens is also giving away free DVD copies at their two shops on the mountain. Love that they're distributing it all for free.
