Ty is back at IPT again. YAY!!
I just removed my trans this week in my garage and it is on its way to IPT. I knew I was having problems after my last "preventative rebuild" where the guy who rebuilt it messed it up but I did not know exactly to what extent of damage was done until I put the car in the garage over night and there was trans fluid everywhere the next morning and when I separated the trans from the engine OMG the smell was enough to knock out a UFC fighter. Great timing since I was removing in the next day. It took me a while to get the trans out of the car but then again I was doing it in my garage and the main problem was bad bolts and my lack of muscles (since I am missing a Y chromosome and all) I cannot wait to get the trans back and see how much of a difference the whole trans makes. I did the IPT valve body in my garage by myself in like 3 hours to get it out (that involved prep time and getting the car on jack stands) and 1.5 hours back in. The Subaru Service Manual leaves out one important part in the manual...lining back up the shifter. Um...yea don't forget that part. I took a pic so no one else would forget it even though Subaru forgets to mention it. IPT is beyond awesome and unfortunately for the person who asked is there is any company like IPT on the west coast the answer is no but its worth the wait and the shipping across the US I promise. Right now IPT is offering Free Shipping on the way back. That was incentive enough for me to be with out the Subie for a few weeks and finally get it fixed the right way.

I have been thinking about this as well vs a spd conversion. a few questions for those who have had it (TC+VB+T-cooler)
1. how is fuel impacted with the mods. 2. how is manual shifting impacted: good or bad 3. how is the down shifting I auto-x which is why I wanted the 5 spd conversion, but if the trans can keep up (right now it cant) that I would gladly pay for the IPT treatment. Thanks |

relative cost difference:
1. ipt fully built 4eat tranny (includes the valvebody modification)- $4000 2. ipt modded torque converter - $500-600 3. Tranny cooler - $100 4. Install service - $500-1000 vs. 5mt swap, not even PPG gears - >$5000 (including install) |

Dude you can do a 5MT swap for about $1500. Are there any updates from the peolpe who have had this done? How are things going, any moans/complaints, is the money spent a good investment? I am thinking about doing this, but would like some good feed back pertaining to the behavior of the car both on and off the track after this work was performed. |

I have had this done recently, but with a built engine and a bigger turbo. Just finished the break-in, now ready for the final tune. I should be able to post comments after that. the behavior change after the tc modification along is noticeable (i.e. no drop in boost thoughout the whole acceleration period). |

I've only had mine for several thousand miles and I have nothing bad to say about it.. but I'd suggest NO ONE get the RalliTek poly urethane trans mount.. it makes my car rattle during low rpm, low speed acceleration.
I went with IPT after my Level 10 VB killed my trans - all of the shifts are very crisp, especially the 1-2 shift - but I asked for that when John rebuilt the trans the second time (do NOT throw your car in PARK while moving, it cracked my case). |

so any of you guys that think automatic trans is stupid or gay how about lets just say you dont know jack, In general, automatic transmissions are known as being more useful for lazy drivers than for serious racers. But it may be surprising for some to know that many pro drag-racing cars have heavy-duty auto gearboxes. That's because the brake-torque launch is an automatic specialty. This launch involves keeping the car stationary by flooring the brakes with the left foot, while using the right foot to rev up the engine against the torque converter. In technical terms, this preloads the entire drivetrain with the stress of a launch, allowing the engine to rev closer to its power and torque peaks at the starting line. Brake torquing is also beneficial for turbocharged engines as it allows boost to build up before the launch, reducing turbo lag. The only problem is that there is a lot of stress on the transmission, and the consequent heat build-up can destroy your automatic gearbox. Unless your car has too much power for the tires to handle, a brake-torque launch usually will not spin the wheels. This is because the automatic transmission absorbs the shock by design, and brake torquing actually reduces stress on the rest of the drivetrain. Instead of a sudden massive load, the drivetrain has the torque applied slower instead of one huge jolt. If you use a hi-speed stall converter you are able to apply power quicker, at a pre-determined rpm, making wheel spin is easier.
Subarus have more traction than they can use, so higher-throttle launches are possible before a hint of wheelspin. Generous throttle application is needed since bogging down the motor is even easier. But these perfect-looking launches are very hard on the clutch and drivetrain. These cars actually last longer for drag-race duty when equipped with an automatic, and the easiest of all to launch, but the most hardcore of these rally-bred cars only come with a manual in keeping with their corner-carving tradition. |
