Well after 4 days of what was a mostly painless install I am now an ej207 v8 swap.
I had a few glitches but it looks like I'm up and running, just need to run avcs wiring and a tune next week and its done. So far so good. Not much different sounding than my ej205 off boost and without avcs. It basically feels identical. I guess avcs will make the biggest difference off boost. I did notice quite a bit of valvetrain noise at the driver side exhaust but from what I've read the "ticking" is fairly common and normal. I'm guessing it seems louder on that side since there is no obstructions? Should I worry about the noise? Otherwise it sounds good and feels good at least up to 5k, I haven't been brave enough to take it higher without the tune, and haven't been into boost yet. I ended up running my vf34 since the downpipe I bought was not the correct length, even though it was sold as usdm length, it was the right flange, wrong length. |

how the hell did you run a vf34 on a twin scroll header? change the entire headers out from the usdm one or did you get a single scroll setup? glad it all turned out well for you. make sure you run 10w/30 or 40. they like thick oil to help with the valve/cam tick.

azscooby, glad to finally hear you have it up and running.
I can finally start refreshing the motor I have. (EJ207DW7ER) Doing the KillerB oil pick up and baffle this weekend. My motor came with the oil cooler set up for the external oil cooler, but I didn't get the radiator for it, so I'm waiting for the regular oil cooler like on the US motors. Also, I still need to wait for new timing belt covers (mine got cracked in shipping) and new front and rear main seals before I can jump into the water pump and belt stuff. I am probably going to do the cam seals and the valve cover gaskets too. I guess if I wasn't so particular, I wouldn't bother replacing all the seals, but I figure it will be a nice refresher for the motor. Once I do all that, get the downpipe and wire in the avcs I'll be good to go.... get tuned that is. I really wanted to do an upgraded turbo but I think I should try out the VF36 for a while and just enjoy it. |

Thanks guys.
AVCS will be wired in probably tonight. A fellow Nasioc'r made a wiring harness for me, very well put together and I've got the DS1 instructions all ready to go. I'm running penzoil platinum 10-30 right now, but will switch to a 5w-40 in either T6 Rotella or the Chevron Delo SYN 5w-40 (i got 4 cases for free). Also would like to try the new Penzoil Ultra, its the hot item right now on BTOG, but the 5w-40 is pretty hard to find, maybe use 10-40? I plan to run the PP for only a short time, just to flush out any contaminants...maybe 500 miles or so. Yeah I'm hoping the avcs makes a difference down low since right now it feels exactly like my ej205, though I haven't been into boost yet. I am running the usdm single scroll manifold right now, sorry if that wasn't clear. I really should sell the vf37 to recoup some costs, though it is very tempting. My tune is scheduled for next Wednesday, can't wait to open her.up! Is it worth it to run am EBCS? Or will the jdm one perform just as well? I understand the jdm BPV is good for 20+ psi, wondering if the BCS is also better. I did the timing belt and idlers, and had to replace an oil solenoid but that's pretty much all I did. I guess I should have done rear main but last time I did one it started leaking immediately. It didn't show any signs of leaking so I left it alone. Looks like everything else is working fine, though I might need to replace the driver side valve cover gasket, as I noticed a small oil leak near that area, but hoping it was just some spilled oil. |

My tick seems to go away with revs, so guess that's a good sign.
They did a compression test on the engine and posted it here on Nasioc, so doesn't seem to be anything serious. Can't wait to get this thing tuned! |

K1,
Holy list of parts batman! I did do the killer b pickup, worth the investment on a $4k motor. I tried to get the own pickup to break but couldn't, so mine probably would have been fine. Better safe than sorry. If you can't get the cam gear bolts to break free just drill them out, its supposed to be pretty easy. |

Aznscooby your going to love the motor. It comes alive after 5k, the twinscroll is amazing but I'm sure your vf34 will be great.

I still have the vf37 and the whole setup, I may still run it, I just need to source a downpipe that is the right.length.
Anyone buy one from Kinugawa Turbo? They have them listed on ebay and when I contacted them they said it would fit my usdm length exhaust Might be worth it if they work. |

Most of the Walmart supercenters have the Rotella 5w40, if they are out of stock the Mobil Delvac 15w40 works well too. |

I believe Clark Turner was saying something to the effect that these EJ207's dont need the thicker oil that we tend to run in the USDM motors.

I just started mine and its stuttering hard. I could drive it for about 2 miles, and then it started to go crappy on my.
I got a camshaft position sensor A ( P0340 ) code. I had that code prior to the build.... It ran fine for 15 minutes!!! |

I'm not a person that pays attention to dyno numbers, but I've been daily-driving my "fully-swapped v8-and-then-some" car for more than 3 years now with the 3076 and I've never regretted getting rid of the VF37. You don't have to conform to my extreme especially when an 18G or 20G (as someone else before me mentioned) are good compromises; the "Polka Pickle" might also interest you as a fast-spooling turbo alternative. Take everything you read here with some degree of subjectivity. There are a number of "veterans" including Clark, fastnoypi, and dug-e that have been sharing their experience and opinions here. Certainly take heed to their advice, but ultimately, the final decision is yours to make. Personally, I'd put weight towards the more "established" suggestions on these motors, explore the available subjective mods, and most importantly, enjoy what the 207 was designed for; it will probably last longer than your 2003 chassis assuming you have a good tune. All the best with your new acquisition and keep us posted on your developments. Gerald. Last edited by gling; 02-10-2012 at 07:27 PM. |

P/s: I've been running Rotella T6 5-40 year round for more than 3 years on my 207 with no issues. Gas mileage might have been questionable though.

Gling is the man! Sorta off topic- how is your gas mileage gerald with ur 3076?
Also- i have emissions due. My jdm ecu is tuned and has no CEL. I should pass emissions correct? As for inspection, if i go put on a stock dp, do i have to get it retuned or can i just "baby" it to the emissions place? |

So as I continue to research all vendors until I feel absolutely confident with everything offered to me...I just received an email for a ver9 with a vf30 to make it a v7 but with the large port and the long runner for $3500. Sounds like a good deal and waiting on pictures and further details. I researched that I may or may not have immobilizer issues with the v9 but what other problems may I run into? I originally planned on getting a V7 but figured I shouldn't pass up on this deal if everything is clean. Thanks.

Yea, about the turbo, I agree with the avcs and better low end capability along with the ability to rev out higher a larger turbo would be better suited to these engines. I feel like I have already spent quite a bit of money and I still have a bit more to spend to tie up loose ends along with a tune so I think for my bank account's sake I will just hold off for the time being on the bigger turbo. I think you will be fine with the JDM ECU for emissions in CT but I could be wrong especially with your v7 ECU; I passed with my v8 but heard that some v7s might have issues. Just give it a shot. If you fail, come back with your USDM ECU. I can't pass with my JDM ECU here in MA so I have my USDM ECU flashed with a similar map as that on my JDM ECU for inspection/emission purposes. Just turn off all the relevant CELs and force readiness in the USDM ECU so you can swap it in just before going to the emission station. I also passed multiple times without having have to swap DPs (no cat) at a Ford or Chevy dealership in Putnam, which might be quite a hike for you. Quote:

Ok, so I wired up the avcs harness and although I no longer have any avcs check engine lights I still don't think my avcs is working. It feels the same as before (off boost, since I'm not yet tuned.)
I'm hoping its just the NSS, as I do have a v8 in my 02, though I don't know the exact year (ej207dw5cr). I believe I am dealing with the reverse polarity problem. I bought a NSS switch for a 2006, so I will wire that in tonight, assuming I can find it . I do have two P0037 codes, which I'm assuming I can tune out. |

that rear o2 sensor low imput can just be deleted and as i have said before can be removed all together. could use that bung for wideband as well then so it doesnt see all those high exh temps as it does in the down pipe.
everyone complains how much tunes are and stuff i love that mine are free because i do them lol as far as staying with the vf37 i cant wait to rock it until it dies. i was known for my td04 before and being as fast at 16G's so this vf37 should give larger turbos and everyones 6mt's a run for there money. long geared ppg should make it even better. oh yeah so has anyone on this thread ran dual ewg with the stock turbo? i got both of mine now and waiting on flanges. not sure exactly how i am going to mount them with room still but it should be stupid loud. |
