Default Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch trademarked

Quote:
Toyota has registered patents for the GR Corolla, C-HR GR-S and C-HR GR Sport names, potentially confirming that small SUV and larger hot hatch brothers for the Toyota GR Yaris are on the way.

The first Toyota GR Corolla is expected to be powered by the same all-new turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder that was specifically created for the upcoming GR Yaris by the car-maker’s in-house performance division, Gazoo Racing.

It’s not yet known how the Corolla will be positioned, but it could produce even more power and torque than the 190kW/360Nm offered by the pint-sized GR Yaris to help it tackle cars like the next Volkswagen Golf GTI and Hyundai i30 N, or even the next VW Golf R.

The Corolla GR Sport previews the full-blooded Corolla hot hatch design
Set to feature all-wheel drive and a traditional six-speed manual transmission, the hottest Corolla ever will also get multi-link suspension and adaptive suspension.

With aggressive GR Yaris-style weight-saving that could include a carbon-fibre roof and plentiful use of lightweight composites, the GR Corolla should hit 100km/h in comfortably less than five seconds and top out at around 260km/h.

The bad news is the GR Corolla isn’t expected to touch down until 2023. It’s thought Toyota bosses deliberately gapped the GR Corolla’s arrival to buy the little GR Yaris some breathing space to win the hearts and minds of hot hatch buyers.

With GR Yaris power, the Corolla hatch will take on the Hyundai i30 N
Originally, it was thought the next Gazoo Racing model to be launched would be the GR C-HR, but that nameplate was absent in this trademark application, hinting that may no longer be the case.

Instead, the new C-HR GR-S and C-HR GR Sport nameplates are likely to appear on slightly sportier versions of the small C-HR SUV, neither of which are expected to get more power.

They are, however, likely to bring upgrades like a sports body kit and suspension developed by Toyota’s go-faster division.

Expect the Toyota C-HR GR Sport to be on sale as soon as late this year.

F***ING BOOOO!!!!!

1.6l I-3 turbo in this fatty, or worse the C-HR? BOOOOO!

If you're going to make a GR corolla it needs a 2.0l I-4 turbo with AWD & 6mt, and for goodness sake, put the car on a diet; it already gets north of 3k lbs in FWD trim, an AWD system, turbo related paraphernalia & required related upgrades (brakes, drivetrain etc.) aren't going to help it any; it will probably land in the 3,200-3,400lb territory with what, 257ish HP from an I-3T? BOOOOO.

So it will basically be an I-3T WRX hatch from Toyota.

If I was stuck buying a FWD hatch, I would much rather have the benchmark GTI.

The dearly departed Focus ST was just over 3200 lbs for 250-hp/270 ft.lb and it was pretty good.
The I3 turbo in the Corolla makes 257-hp/265 ft.lb; same power with less pumping losses, better fuel economy and less weight on the nose of the car.
There's nothing wrong with that; especially because no other manufacturer is rushing to build relatively inexpensive AWD hatchbacks (Golf R doesn't count).

You're missing the point Pre and I are making, the GR was attractive at 257/265 and 2,800lbs with proper diffs.

There are two issues here, and the main issue is:
Toyota is stuffing that drivetrain into a chassis that is going to weigh at least 400lbs to 600lbs more; even if Toyota kept the power to weight ratio, it's going to lose a lot of fun factor due to weight gain.

To your example, people preferred the Fiesta ST to the Focus ST because it was way more fun to drive even though it was slower & less powerful, and had a torsion beam rear setup.

secondary issue:
Toyota isn't going to keep the power to weight ratio. At 10.89lbs:1hp a 3,200lb car would need 294hp, a 3,400lb car would need 321hp, and that's again assuming they keep the car down to that weight range, which is being optimistic, unless they are willing to let the price go really high.

Other potential issues:
Mechanical diffs may go by the wayside in favor of a front biased "FWD+" AWD system with some form of brake simulated limited slip.
price could go too high for what it is, the article mentions CF potentially being utilized & the golf R as a potential target.

Pre (and others) wanted a 3dr lightweight rally car for the street that the rest of the world is getting - aka hot yaris
I wanted a 5dr lightweight rally car for the street - aka hot yaris
We are not getting that, we are getting a WRX competitor, 3 years from now.

Toyota is providing too little too late (or is it too big too late?)

Guys, while I appreciate the sentiment, the tuner market and F&F crowd is dead and gone. There is Zero market for a rally car for the street from an OEM. Best thing you can do is go buy an old bugeye and build your own.

I hear you both and points well taken.
But, there is no WRX hatchback and there is no indication we will ever get one because Subaru has its head way deep into its own ass.
So, IMO, in 3 years, that 257-hp Corolla might come in handy and provide some alternative to Golf R - which, at this point, is the only AWD hatchback game in town -. That's all I'm saying.

While you might be right about a "rally car for the street", I think there's pretty clearly a market for a cheaper alternative to an Audi S4. More cars than ever are getting "AWD," but unfortunately most of them are some combination of boring, slow, expensive, and FWD based.

Hopefully a more modern STI shows up to fill that niche. Hatch, or no hatch, I want a modern performance car with a MT and a real AWD system.

Nah, it's dead for you man, not everyone, sorry that isn't true even in the slightest. I read I watch, it's still going strong. Is it like it was in the heyday 15 years ago? No, but it is still there.

There is a market for the GR4. It's current and previous EVO, STi, etc customers. It's not and never was intended to be a high volume vehicle. Toyo is trying to make inspiring performance cars again and just did. It's the NA heads of these companies wanting to vanilla everything.

They also chose silver with a black roof to show off their GR performance concept.... yeah that will grab attention and excite the youths.

I got a feeling AWD might not be an option for the GR Corolla. If it does, it might be AT only. I predict the GR Corolla as FWD and C-HR GR will be AWD (maybe).

Imagine having to explain to someone that you drive a "C" "H" "R" "G" "R" "S".

BMW doesn't offer a manual with the Z4, I think that's the problem.

This GR Corolla is gonna be the next gen Corolla I assume if it's 2023?

Maybe it'll lose some weight, who knows. The benchmark went from "Awesome" to "GTI". Meh.

That is true. Toyota is too dumb to challenge themselves to make their own MT variant I suppose.

I thought the Z4's future 4-banger version was going to be released with an MT option? There is no mention from Toyota about them doing the same for their 4 banger Supra.. which is their consecutive fail.

Sorry Scrappy, respectfully I'm with Pre here. I was ready to make a deposit on the GR4.
