I could sleep for a week
The rally was shortend to just 3 stages (about half the intended size) due to the bad weather. Car 24 hit the wall on the transit from Hope to Princeton. Several competitors commented that they had never seen it rain that hard. For most of the transit, it was not possible to see the road. Very tough stuff.
Stage 1 was cancelled due to avalanche/mud slide. The other stages were pretty easy and most people probably scored less than 10 points. We had the new rally computer installed but did not manage to get the revised software that corrects the calibration problem. We should have turned it off but the temptation to try it was too great. We ended up with too much work to do instead of less and that caused us to misread one instruction. Owen gave me the time to get to an odo point that was really 0.25km down the road. That put us late by about 20 seconds in a slow section. He realized just a few seconds before the checkpoint. Too late to correct for the mistake and that bombed our score. I was already asleep when they announced the scores. We got 3 zeros, 1, 6 & 13 for a total of 20. I think a handful of other novices were on 5. So we did not score any championship points. Just to add to the excitement, we got a puncture on stage 2. The can of moose worked a treat and it was easily fixed so we could continue. What did we learn from this event The +13 late we got was unavoidable and there was nothing to learn from that (other than it happens). We did learn that if you have an odo to 0.01 accuracy it has to be able to be calibrated. Close enough is just not close at all. We suffered from a lack of preparation. Coming back from Whistler with just enough time to leave for HoD did not help. This is a lesson I thought we learnt from novice #4 last year. In the future, I'll plan to be more prepared. Gravel rally tires would not have punctured. We should get some of those. John Fouse had some Speedline 2118 wheels on his car. These are the only suitable wheels I can find for the Subaru and they looked better on the car than they do in a picture. A can of moose really works. When I bought it, I never really expected it to work so good. I'm impressed with that. Even a rally that is almost destroyed by the weather is still a great adventure. I'm not happy with our performance, but at least we got out there and did it. Owen learnt how to sleep between time checks (every 30 seconds) and how to wait for the end of the stages before barfing. |

Sounds nasty and a ball all at the same time.
I was thinking about you guys on Saturday night, even locally the weather was freaky. Couldnt begin to imagine what it was like there. Hope everybody was alright. Yup, the moose is good! My FR tire was flat after Novice #1 last week. Just bought a can from Canadian Tire and it worked like a charm. How much is a good set of gravel tires? |

I'll say it was the harshest (and most eventful) TSD I've ever done, even in it's shortened capacity.
When we found out the first reg had been closed due to a couple slides/washouts, we all had to book it fast to the next reg in order to stay close to the scheduled time. The revised transit was a roundabout route, featuring twisty mountain roads, heavy rain and fog at times, and large rocks in the middle of the road, among other similarly pleasant obstacles. Imagine a train of stickered up cars driving 100km/h through that in the black of night. Nuts...! The second reg had some really really rough sections. Completely pothole/rut riddled parts. And culverts... the culverts!!! My front skidplate also has a new shape now. This was the reg Petrie blew his tire. While I was driving this one, I was thinking "any time now...RE92s gonna give..." I also mentioned to Brad, my navigator, somewhere in the middle of the rally, that the car felt really sluggish and tended to bog more than usual. It turned out it wasn't in my head. The big sponsor decal that I put on my hood of my car had come off sometime during the first transit. In the blinding rain and fog, I didn't even notice it was missing until we stopped. It wasn't until I had driven all the way back to Vancouver and popped the hood that I saw bits of vinyl decal stuck all over my intercooler. NOTE TO SELF: ensure hood decals are firmly affixed to car in the future. I was the walking (sort of) dead at the end of the rally, though I think Petrie had the worse end of the sleeping stick if you compared the marks around our eyes. It was still a fun experience. I could have done without the bent skidplate, numerous tiny paintchips on the front bumper, and the long wait for scores, but I think I would do it again. -Jeff |

Recommend a source, Bill? I wouldn't mind looking into it, especially if it's Canadian.
