Still need to get some video action for you guys, was at friends place to get weights and corner balance.

Here is my official new weight, and balance I've manages to move about 5% of the weight rearward and take out around 500lbs

And a nice shot of the undercarriage, with it up on the lift.

For these I will use the OEM STI top mounts, this set should give me idea of what spring rates i would like to run with the KW V3's that I need to get rebuilt.

you notice any ill effects of welding to the struts, like oil boiling out odf the seals or anything? I turned my foz into a tube truck and need something like what you made here

No ill effects when you use the STI dampers, they are inverted monotone so all you are welding to is just the metal shells.

Winter has been quite and car has not gotten much use, due to what sounds like some rod knock, which means I need to move quicker my engine rebuild plans. Still deciding between a high comp. NA ~13.0:1 or a 10.7:1 turbo build.

Check the dipstick for metal flakes? If not it could be a tensioner or exhaust leak, i've seen a few "rodknocked" motors without any bearing failure.

Compression without good flowing heads won't make much power. Get those things ported. See if delta will regrind your cams. Even stock compression would make some good numbers N/A with cams and head work.

Yeah, I have not confirmed its actually rod knock but there is a noise i don't like. I did an oil change recently and didn't really see any metal flakes.

Otherwise everything i have heard/read about the heads is that they flow pretty well, cams are definitely a sticking point, with the variable lift system no one want to do them at least not for anything less than 2500. Its one reason (among many) that adding boost is much easier on this motor. Like I said i am still in the debating stage, part of the high compression NA is a desire to put one in a BRZ. 350 HP NA in a brz with the sound this motor makes would be quite a nice thing.

James,
Well I cant believe I actually found your build thread. I was the tall guy working grid at that last ZMax event that was drooling over the fozzy. Im going to loose sleep now because Im going to go back and read it from page one.
To anyone that thinks this is an awesome build... Its event better in person and the videos do NOT do the exhaust note justice. Keep up the awesome craftsmanship

No major updates as of yet, had some "fun" with engines over the last year or so. The suspected rod knock was indeed just that with spun bearing on a few cylinders.

I rebuilt my spare motor to stock specs just to get it back and drivable. A few weeks after putting that motor in the car I started to hear familiar knocking noises, a disappointment for sure and when I took that motor back apart i found that the bearings were not the source of the failure but a wrist pin clip that had come partially out and was rubbing on the cylinder wall before breaking off.

This put lots of nasty iron shavings into the oil. So that motor is now officially just a mock-up engine.

So at this point I just started looking fo another motor on eBay and found a good price on a engine and 6 speed transmission combo.

6 speed will be for this nice 2002 wrx

With the new engine on hand i thought i would spend a quick weekend swapping the engine out, till i remembered that the RWD conversion required some stupid reworking of the structural lower engine sump. (I was cursing myself out for doing such silly things) So even though i already had the modified sump to swap in, it requires the removal of all the front covers and timing gears, chains, bolts. However the actually engine swap is pretty quick especially with no power steering or AC. and i enjoy the simplified engine bay

A few weeks later everything was swapped over and the cars was back and driving. Which is incredible fun especially with the 4.44 ap sure trac diff swapped in. Though it does make a lot of howling and whining, so that will need a rebuilt at some point.

Will be posting up some fun rubber burning videos soon, waiting for all this spring time rain to go away so i can take the tires from 1/32 tread depth to about -1/32 tread depth.

Otherwise the only real major issue seems to be a ground leak at the fuel pump connector. every few weeks the pump will not turn on, it has over 12 volts, round circuit checks out with no major resistance showing, but i have to run a jumper wire directly to the battery to get it to kick on. Once i do this everything seems fine, at least til lit happens again. I consider it a sign that its time to put in a standalone eco and ditch the stock unit.

Subbed for ITB's and the rest of your amazing fabrication.

My vote: go straight for the turbo.

it's dead simple to get a mechanical sensor machined into the bell housing anyway.

Hey lodown1 any chance you are still driving this thing?

I am thinking of doing the same style of conversion (ex30r+oem ecu) into an outback (aussie spec, gen3).

Just wondering what you did with the tone rings on your axles at the start? Did the forester not have tone rings on the stock axles? Or did you put them on to give the ECU a signal of sort sort? Cheers

The ABS tone ring solution was posted near the beginning of this thread.

Hey lodown1, how you been? Hope this monster is still ripping! Any updates? Cheers.

Still love ripping it around... actually somewhat daily right now

Only major update was putting in the r180 rear diff from a 2021 STI early this year. After rebuilding a AP-suretrac r160 diff and even having it welded up nicely it didn't hold up. I still cant really put all the blame on the smaller r160 as I did the rebuild myself and with the used ring and pinion i dont know if it was setup correct.

Its also curently acting like a test mule for some out the PFC brake options for the porsche 911 GT3 and Cayman GT4 applications

but images and videos are much more fun so see below...

Broken welds on the r160

The usual trouble side of the r160 that i had re-welded was good

Driveshaft shop STI replacement axles

2021 super low mileage R180

This was a couple years ago with the 4.44 R160 diff

Have a few updates I need to make for the wiring and fueling systems, and shocks seem to be in need of a rebuild or replacement... but having too much fun driving it to really tear into it again.

some extra flogging done this week...

rolling first gear acceleration,

This was the drivers side axle inner CV, put in new 10 months ago. These were not driveshaft shop axles but insane shafts 04-07 STI 500hp units. Still waiting to hear back from them on their 18 month warranty.
