Default Are stupid SUBARU AXLES retarded?

just got my driver side done about a year ago. the stupid thing is that the axle won't budge at all near the hub? so we replaced the whole spindle and axle NOW THE PROBLEM, my passenger side has a torn cv boot now...so is there any way to get the axle out? i tried using MAP gas and that hasn't worked yet. HIT the crap out of it but doesn't work(same thing as driver side which made mushroom on axle). SO all the subaru guru's out there...HELP

My axles aren't "retarted", nor are they retarded. Though, they MAY be retarted, seeing as how they are always whoring themselves out for a nice set of wheels. Those skanky tarts...

You have to take the axle nut off first silly...

Seriously though, I've never had a one of my axles stick at the hub. Usually the slightest tap with a hammer on the end and they pop right out. I have noticed however they have a guide hole in the middle of the stub which intends to be there so you can use a puller on it. I would throw a 2/3 jaw puller on the hub with the piston on the end of the axle stub and start cranking. Tap with a hammer along the way once you get a ton of force on there and eventually something will POP! With luck it will be the axle...

I've replaced both front axles and one rear axle and have never had any issues at all. I don't even think I needed to tap on 'em with a hammer, I just unbolted everything and pulled the knuckle out and the axle fell right out of the hub.

I'm done with this post for two reasons...

1. Mr. Illegal has too many spelling/grammar/punctuation errors for me to read through his posts without hurting my head.

2. I've only done this kind of work once or twice and it was YEARS ago. Way too long for me to give hints and tips that would be worth anything.

An airhammer works really well if you've got one also.

Hammer on the center of the axle until it starts to move a little... Then tighten the axle nut back down to pull it back in... Remove the axle nut, and hit the axle with the air hammer again... Keep repeating until the axle comes off.

Then take the end of the axle to a wire wheel and clean all of the crud off... Get a wire brush and clean the hub out, and then antisieze the **** out of everything when putting it back together.

Pretty much looks like maybe a harmonic balancer puller/steering wheel puller for a US car might work. You can usually rent such stuff @ PepBoys/Schucks/Autozone on the cheap!

Yeah, I like getting tools like this at Autozone, cause if I break them it's a free replacement. I have broken three, and needed to swap for a small one once. All I have ever done is bought one puller and the rest have been free.

Oh, and it's hard to tell from the pic, but as well as completely destroying the end, there is also a bow to the threaded rod now, and I had to switch jaw ends when one of the teeth let go. That axle was a champ.

Sorry to upset you illegal, but you've been here since 2004 (according to your member profile), so you should know that a few of us in the legacy section request somewhat proper english be used (a civilized car deserves civilized grammar). We are also quite quick to jump on (and flame) those who have a LOT of errors in their posts.

I know, we shhouldn't be so hard on everyone, but someone has to be... Just be glad that I'm the only one complaining this time. Sometimes a bunch of us will just highjack a thread if the errors are bad enough!

Now, back to the topic of axles:

What's wrong with OP's opening post? You say proper English should be used yet every word is spelled correctly and he did a fine job capturing his frustration through the use of sarcasm and capitalized letters. If anything, the grammar is a bit off with improperly formatted sentence structure, but the English is fine...

Then again what do I know, I've only been here since 2004 too...

As janik pointed out- the more readable a question is, the more willing we'll be to answer it. There's no reason to dumb down a technical question, or the forum in general, by shouting, posting a bunch of angry faces & poor spelling.

Subaru axles are not "retarted" in any way, and the post sounds like it was written by an angry middle-school kid.

How about this?

Actually, that is perfect. It is VERY CLEAR what you need help with and there is no silly spelling error to make fun of...

illegal2.2 - one more thing, don't forget about the roll pin on the transmission end of the cv axles, well at least there were one on each axle on my impreza. It is a small pin that is inserted through the center of the joint. You can find it by rotating your cv axle. The pin is tapered so that means it can easily be removed in one direction...but you could be like me and can spend an hour trying remove it from the opposite end. I literally used every tool i had, and finally rigged up my own punch and air-hammer combo. I realized it was tapered when i removed the other side...which took less than a minute. good luck.

Axle pin... And they're not tapered new, likely take the form from being pounded in...

A good rule of thumb is to flatten the teeth a bit (equally) across the pin before inserting. Makes them go in easier so you don't have to beat the crap out of them...
