Default Purchasing Subaru but not sure which to purchase

My husband and I are looking to get our second Subaru. We are torn between the Impreza hatchback and the crosstrek. He wants a vehicle that has dual exhaust but Iím not sure if either comes with that option. Plus we will be traveling a lot so we want s vehicle with good gas mileage and comfortable. If anyone has any information about either vehicle please message me. Thank you

Jackie

Better gas milage I would go with the Impreza (hatchback if compared with Crosstrek). In fact, I was looking at a lightly used MT one to replace my beater Honda about a month ago on Autotrader and found 2016-2017 hatchback's going for like $15-17K with only 7-10k miles! I could not believe the bargain. Those have sold, but they had the alloy wheels and all. Might want to check your area too. GL with your car hunting.

Impreza CVT. Call it a day.

If you're considering used, look also at Legacys. We bought a year old Legacy Limited over the summer for the cost of a new Impreza. We own a Crosstrek already and were doing the same Impreza vs Crosstrek comparison until I stumbled across Legacys during my search. When you say comfort, that's Legacy territory. Legacys tend to depreciate far quicker than Imprezas, Crosstreks and WRX class vehicles. Gas mileage is on par with our Crosstrek CVT.

I'd look at a Legacy. More power, similar gas mileage, more room. Go for the top end models and get WRX-like power. The Impreza and XV can hardly accelerate on the highway as they're too heavy for their engine and you gain minimal if any real world mpg over the Legacy/Forester/Outback.

Are you looking to buy new or used? If used, how used?

Are you willing to ship?

I got a '15 Legacy Premium with ~30k miles last Fall for $15750. The car was from outside the rust belt and had astonishingly little corrosion, especially compared to our '14 FXT which has spent its entire life here in New England.

My buddy is shipping an '11 (I think) Acura TL from Texas for about what he'd pay for one up here. He had it inspected, but no pictures; I'd bet it arrives in pristine condition from what his mechanic says.

My wife and I bought a 2016 Impreza brand new a few years back, and it served us quite well. We got the Sport Limited, and we have 2 kids. Worked well for us. We got pretty good fuel economy out of it. We lived in a busy area of Plano, TX (North Dallas) and averaged about 25 or so MPG out of it. Took a few trips with it as well, with the longest being up to Kansas City (from Dallas), and it was just fine.

We replaced it with a new 2018 Outback in August, and we got that one in Limited trim as well. It's MUCH more comfortable, even though it's packaged similarly. The step up in quality between the Impreza and the Outback is VERY noticeable. We also are averaging about 24 MPG with the Outback even with it's larger size, larger engine, and with it being much heavier.

The Impreza suited us fine, but we're both a lot happier with the Outback, and feel like it will grow with our family and suit our needs much better now and into the future. I would say that if you can afford the step up, give the Outback a look.

If it's a little outside of your budget, I would recommend the Impreza over the Crosstrek as the Crosstrek really mainly benefits those that would use it in off-road situations where the additional ground clearance is useful. We looked at it, and didn't find a valid reason to go with the Crosstrek over the Impreza for a vehicle that we were going to be using almost exclusively on paved roads.

Hope that helps.
