Default Slight oil leak out of valve cover gaskets - PCV valve is hollow?

Hi guys,

I couldn't find anything about this and I even contacted the dealer and they seem to be dumbfounded by this - so hopefully you awesome techs on NASIOC can help..

Anyhow, I recently replaced the valve cover gasket because it was leaking... but now, it's still leaking around the seal and we followed the replacement guide. More recently, I installed my exhaust and wanted to check the PCV valve while I had everything torn apart... We pulled it out and it was hollow- you could see right through it. It was like there was no valve in there.

So, a couple of questions regarding this:
1) Why the hell would the PCV valve be hollow (benefits? problems?)
2) Would this be causing more pressure causing my valve cover gaskets to continue to leak?

Thanks!

The PVC should always have a bearing inside of it. If it was hollow it would serve no purpose of venting it would just vent all the time and not when pressure built up. It may have been faulty from the factory or if you replaced it prior it might've been a bad one from the store. I've replaced my PVC on my truck and the piece of garbage broke before I put it on. Fram, wix, and microgard all make faulty stuff. If you don't hear a rattle its bad.

I'm the second owner so the replacement or drilling was done before me. I'm wondering why it was done like this in the first place and if it would cause valve cover gaskets to leak (I thought all the pressure stayed in the crank).

It may be causing the leak I know on my truck the VC were leaking then when I changed it out it stopped. Is your car back firing or just leaking!?

Not back firing - just a very slight leak.. not even affecting oil levels, but it's dripping on my up pipe smelling like crap... that and my up pipe is wrapped, so I need to take care of this asap

All I can think of is your crankcase isn't venting properly and it's building up too much pressure!

Well of course I'm getting a new pcv valve.. waiting in dealer to get it in. Apparently AutoZone doesn't have the right size, their threads were wider.

Anyhow, was just curious why someone would remove the inner valve... Strange.

That I have no idea, it loses it's function unless they thought it would keep venting even when off:/ hahahha

A hollow pcv valve would not increase pressure on the crank case. It would apply manifold vacuum and would not effect vc gaskets leaking. It would however effect your car.. it could suck up oil saturate o2 sensors and the cat.

A pcv valve is basically a one way valve. It pulls vapor under vacuum and closes under boost. If there's nothing in it wouldn't boost pressure from the intake pass rite through it and pressurize the crankcase ?

Default pic?

so essentially, it's just functioning as a tee? '08 has the PCV Tee assembly, right? this should be happening if that was the case: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2045063

That's looks to be with a catch can setup. I don't think the pcv is a t. Even of it was it has to close under boost otherwise your pumping boost from the intake rite into the crankcase. It's open under vacuum closed under boost. That's whats the missing valve inside does.

lentotheism: No pics - should have grabbed one but didn't. Interesting on that post though because I don't get any CEL's ... just that slight oil leak (how frustrating).

Dragonfueled: I thought the same thing, but also thought the PCV valve remained in place even with an AOS... right?

Idk about the hollowed out pcv but the only way i can ever stop a suby valve cover leak is to apply Hondabond to the vc...install gasket...apply Hondabond on gasket...install valve covers

My new gaskets leaked as bad as my old ones untill i did the ole Hondabond trick lol

Ugh seems like such a shady solution. Why do we have to do this? Possible slightly warped heads?

Ok so just an update... #1, I'm an idiot... and I didn't originally pull the PCV last time.. I pulled something that looked nearly exactly like it but hollow lol... Ended up really replacing the pcv valve last night after looking into it a bit harder. the old one was a little clogged, but still rattled very little and didn't have good flow at all.

ALSO.. looking to find the oil leak a bit more, we looked and it seems oil is coming out of the cam seals from behind the cam gear.. it's not getting on the belt and it's barely leaking, not even enough to cause any noticeable oil loss between changes.

I'm hoping the pcv valve replacement should stop the leaking but if not, I'll probably replace the seals later when doing the timing belt.. any thoughts on this?

Also, how taut should the timing belt be?
