My guess would be a compartment to hold the captains chairs headrests for when you fold them flat into the void.

Or it's a concept and someone thought it looked good.

I think it's just a concept take on seatback pockets.

I'm wondering if they'll have the option of a full bench 2nd row for 8-passenger seating.

it kind of reminds of seat back trays you see on planes.

it would be a very bad oversight if they didn't, together with the face that the tribeca had 3 seats across the middle.

The Forester's FA20DIT is rated at 250hp. 20% more than that is 300hp, which is much more likely for SUV.

I'll definitely be following this closely... I might be switching back to Subaru in 2020 if the STI gets this motor.

Subaru showing their roots again!

I don't know why people think Subaru has to sell an H6 just because they think people don't like the idea of a turbo H4. If the H4 gets the job done then that's all anyone cares about.

I think it's the same people who thought people wouldn't take to the CVT, yet they're selling great. People just want stuff to work. People spending money on an AWD SUV can handle being told that it'll perform best with higher octane, but perform adequately with lower octane. Most humans don't know what's under the hood, nor do they care. Just run the things!

I remember reading a statistic somewhere (Care&Driver or Motor Trend) that had the % of Outback buyers who opted for the H6, and it was really low. My guess is that once Subaru has a higher displacement 4-cyl Turbo they'll ditch the H6 altogether as it's pretty low volume for them.

I'm impressed with the interior, if they can pull this off can't wait to see if they'll do something similarly premium with the next STI.

I'm guessing the motor will make the magical 300HP number for in this application, and maybe 320+HP when it goes all hot-rod in the next STI. Keep in mind for an STI application we can deal with more turbo-lag, high revs, higher quality internals, more noise etc. whereas in an SUV they want something quiet and sedate.

V10-12 buyers would never opt for turbo V8s
V8 truck buyers and luxury car buyers would never opt for turbo V6s
Entry level luxury 6 cylinder buyers would never opt turbo 4 cylinders.

Getting the picture? Regardless of execution, downsizing is real. Lopping off 2 cylinders, using DI, and adding a turbo is a fair trade in most cases.

It's not like Subaru is going to make that many anyways. They just need to sell the quantity they do make.

Totally agree. It's all about application.

I own a older V8 truck, but I'd buy a V6. I also don't need a diesel truck because I don't tow crazy heavy stuff. Now is the average person going to need 4-5k in towing with this Ascent? Doubt it.

Most will not but, that is where the segment is. 7-8 passenger, 300+hp, 5K towing, WiFi, etc, etc.

You have to be competitive.

Yes, I am one of the very few that use the CGVW and 5K tow rating 3-4 times a year. When you need it you need it.

Peace,

Greg

I think that's where Toyota has a little advantage with their truck frames and v6 availability. Highlander is a nice vehicle.

What excites me about the Ascent is the drivetrain. If, and there's no reason to suspect otherwise, the new engine and new HTCVT can handle that vehicle and its tow rating... imagine what's upcoming in the WRX, but especially the STi.

I pretty much stopped reading the announcement after the part about the engine. I even forgot the name of the SUV thing that the concept is previewing, what was it, Ass End or something, whatever.

The next gen STI will get the SGP (Global Platform) for sure, and hopefully a powered up version of this engine making 320hp / 320lb-ft @ 2000 rpm.

O'rly? I was thinking half that, but okay then.

Do yo thang, Subaru. Who am I to stand in your way? I want every vanilla item to be a success. Then maybe we'll get FI BRZ, Legacy GT, Outback XT, STI coupes, Baja II's, and whatever else people dream of these days, all with 6MT designed by Aisin.

I feel sorry for anyone who would buy in-car hotspots that are 3G only and bundled with the car itself (MBenz, etc.). Even if it's an in-car 4G hotspot, it makes more sense to buy a hotspot from a carrier and choose your own data plan (AND network) instead of screwing yourself as a consumer and trying to bundle it with a car manufacturer. Throwing away the ablity to upgrade the hotspot come 5G or use the hotspot without having to turn on the car is one of the reasons why.

The headrest screens I can understand since not everyone wants to buy an Android or iPad tablet for their children OR they have passengers who don't have tablets themselves.

Who doesn't have a tablet? Carriers practically give them away since they're constantly advancing.

If you gots kids, you gots tablets.

I'm sure some people regularly chauffeur friends from place to place and the headrest screens is just tech I would expect to be there come 2025. MOST people have smartphones but I wouldn't say MOST have a tablet at the same time.

I guess I'm thinking that anyone with Headrest Money will have already purchased a tablet. If the trip is long enough to require individualized entertainment then they'll have prepared in advance.

I do agree that for in-town trips most won't bring a tablet. Mine stays at home most days, especially since I hardly use it for its intended purposes anymore. It's just a bedtime down-winder these days.

Headrests are convenient, especially if passengers only have iPhone 7's and no Bluetooth headphones.
