G-Stock Solo-II exhaust & brakes?
I don't want to steal the thunder from the other two auto-x threads going on right now, but I am looking for very specific recommendations for a GS auto-x'er. I'm already planning on some KYB AGX struts, a K&N filter, and a better alignment. However, I really don't know what to do about a cat-back exhaust or brake pads.
Exhaust: Everyone seems to talk about exhausts in relation to aftermarket intakes. Since I can't do anything with the intake, what is the best exhaust when combined with the stock intake? Unlike all the other threads in the other i-club forums, I'm more interested in even better mid-range torque and flexibility than a peak HP increase near redline. Brake Pads: What are the best brake pads for the stock system? I really love the Ferodos I use on my VW, but I haven't heard of any RS owners using them...if they're even available. The idea is to get pads that grip well when cold and come up to operating temp very quickly, unlike road race pads. Thanks in advance! Neal

Exhaust-- use a 2.25" midpipe and any straight-through 2.25" muffler. I have a Borla turbo muffler, but I have no illusions that something even cheaper or conversly more expensive (and better looking) would make a dramatic difference.
If you can get something light, bonus. For that reason I'd avoid the Scoobysport, nevermind the >$500 pricetag. |

I doubt that you will find much better braking for Autox than the stock pads. Some may tell you otherwise, but I don't know a single person who ever experienced brake fade in a autox run. Having said that, I have ebc greens. They're ok, I guess.

Usually the trade off for performance pads is the operating temps. The stock pads are designed to work cold.
I wouldn't bother upgrading to any performance pads until the stock pads are toast. |

I know alot of people run SuperTrapps for exhausts. Two reasons, they're light, and you can tune the discs or just run without them.

I've been running in the Oregon Region SCCA for a couple years, in g-stock.
Exhaust: I built a cat-back 2.25" exhaust using a cheap dynomax universal muffler. I was after mid range bump, as opposed to top end only. Brake pads: I'm still running the stock pads. I have found that even with 225/50-16 Kumhos on smooth tracks, i get quite a bit of ABS action, or if the fuse is pulled (generally keeps abs active) I can too easilly lock the fronts. Have never experienced fade. hope this helps, Chris Hartman www.subrew.com |

having driven STiShawn's car with the mintex pads, they definetly provide better bite than the stockers. sure, fade isn't a problem with either, but the better initial bite would help a little, though nothing that significant since the braking zones are so short anyway.

I think you can modify the stock intake , but you have to leave the air box in. I believe a k&n filter charger and a ganz flow intake are legal as they leave the stock box in place. That was the impression i got form a guy with Equipe Rapide, they use SCCA rules for classes.

Yup. The resonator MUST stay. You can change the tires, the struts (as long as they don't alter ride height), the plugs, the lubes, the filters, the plug wires, the exhaust (cat back only).... uh, what else... oh, you can remove the spare, jack, and trunk floor. Um, thats it. Even if we had adjustable timing (spark, that is), it still has to be within factory specs....
--Roy PS. At my last autox, my 00 RS took 1st in Gstock with only A032s on Locos.... Unfortunately, I wasn't driving. |

Well here's my 2c. I ran in GS last year at Nationals, fastest stock class Subaru. Finnishing 25th. may not sound like much, but concider the pax v. other subaru finnishers and it was a good run. I use the Stromung dual tip because it gives the best midrange and good high end power. For brakes I used some of Cobb Tuning's special pads. They are great, I tried the Ferodo's and they worked well but I did not think they manipulated well. The stock pads can fade on Nationals style courses (fast). Just my 2c. Good Luck, I am off to run SM this year.

Thanks for all the replies!
It seems like a 2.25" aluminized-steel cat-back exhaust may be the trick. I really like the sound of the Stromung, but if it is just as fast, I might go for something less expensive, like an UltraFlo. Anyone know where I can get just a 2.25" mandrel-bent mid-pipe to go along with a generic muffler? No, I haven't experienced fade often in an autocross, but it has happend on several occasions. I definitely felt some at the ProSolo last weekend, since you do back-to-back runs frequently. In addition, it's a two-driver car. Opie (Will) somehow even managed to boil his brake fluid...though I'm guessing he may have been over-braking. Neal [This message has been edited by SUV-ETR (edited February 21, 2001).] |

Josh, that's not allowed in stock. No intake modifications beyond swapping out the air filter element for something of a different material is allowed in stock.
