Post My MY00 DIY intake.

Yes, finally I have gotten it all together and am releasing pics of it.

I'm sorry to say that this is for MAP-based cars only, but I guess you MAF-basers can look and enjoy as well.

Check it out over here and let me know what you think.

I don't suppose you have before and after G-Tech runs or Track times?

Interesting design though. Have you tried it with a higher flowing filter?

8,

I like what you did. But it seems to me, for someone worried about water in the engine, you still have a potential problem. At least we can avoid the 10" deep puddle you sucked water from, but not the rain and snow.

You might be better off with the AMSOIL oiled foam filter, since it would be harder to damage it, and the oiled foam would resist water droplets better. Plus, since it will get dirty faster, you can clean the AMSOIL instead of throwing out paper filters all the time. They recommend cleaning/oiling only every 25,000 miles!

Also, the added surface area of the foam filter would be better than a K&N in your setup. Although the airbox is certainly turned around 90 degrees, the actual "90 degrees coolant hose" doesn't look like 90, it looks more like 60 degrees. That's weird, like an optical illusion. Are you sure about the angle? And, what length of hose does it take to make the angle turn?

Lastly, I'd put a screen in front of the scoop opening, to catch bugs and rocks and prevent further damage, etc...

I'm gonna stay with the inner fender for cool-air for now. Paul Brizel and I are meeting in Colorado Springs CO tomorrow to do a purchase on some 2.5" aluminum tubing for our "fender intakes", to get rid of the 2" PVC plastic intake tubing. Kastle is going in on it with us, at about $20 each for a 60 degree bend and 20" straight piece.

I'm gonna polish it before I put it on.

Forgive my rather uneducated note here..but wouldn't your setup perform better if the filter was angled up more towards the opening of the scoop?

Good idea nonetheless!

I like it. Ingenious. Only problem is that it is a fair weather intake, while it may perform having to diddle with it everytime it rains would be a major pain. But that is just me. Hmmm...what about putting a cover on the filter with the opening to the back? Kind of a fiberglass dome but with a big opening towards the back. Obviously you would have to do get creative to have clearence for the bolts. It should behave the same (since I really don't think there is much "ram air" effect going on) and keep out the crap. Just a thought. BTW concerning the cardboard covers, go and get some fiberglass resin, mix it up, and brush it on the cardboard. The cardboard with soak some of it up but with succesive coats the fiberglass will essentially form a "hard candy shell". I've done the fiberglass on cardboard thing a number of time and it works well. Plus you can smooth it would with judicous sanding and a little body filler. Then you can paint it for that "factory" look.

Having ridden in the "8Complex Monstrosity 888", I think can give a fair view on the performance of the intake.

That fun low end that pushed you back into the seat is gone. Mind you that this is w/o any kind of A/F adjustment or exhaust mods. But, the car accelerates and sounds like a Honda on its second cam profile. You know what a Honda sounds like with a loud exhaust? Well that is exactly how the INTAKE screamed. All that missing low end torque kicked in when the car starts getting sluggish after 4500-5000 rpm, pulling the car quickly to redline. Great for the racetrack. Real poor for the autoX track.

For daily driving? Only if you drive like 8Complex.

What is the coolant hose for? What did you do about the airbox connecting with he brackets? I did the same thing with mine but left it in factory position so the filter is facing back sealed the filter in place with gasket sealer. It sounds good and definitely seems faster, but I would still rather compare before and after low and high end specs and see if there is a better setup out there.

AaronB, unfortunately I don't have access to a G-Tech, but I've asked around so hopefully I'll be able to get some results sometime. If it comes down to it, I might just have to buy one...

Larry, yeah I have to worry about a bit of water, but I think that it's not too big of a deal. The front edge of the hole in the hood for the scoop falls short of the filter so there is rom for water to roll up the hood and fall into the engine compartment rather then into the intake. The upper 3/4" of inside of the scoop is what'd gather the water, but considering the angle and everything, I don't think much water will get in there. We'll see.

An Amsoil filter would be ok, but there is one thing that I have to keep in consideration - that the bolts from the underside of the scoop actually protrude into the filter and hold it down / damage it a little. I don't want to get an Amsoil filter if I think that those bolts will just go through it. I've never seen one, however, so I don't know all there is to know about them.

BTW, that angle is probably closer to 75-80° but I've never measured it. Also, the plenum box section that sits up there is over the coolant hose about 3/4" to 1" so you can't see a little of the bend.

Keiho, Yeah, it would work a little better if the front side was down a little more, but I didn't want to cut up my stock into plenum box.

Bob O, I've thought about that one before, but I don't have the means to fiberglass stuff (I've got no clue how or where to get fiberglassing material even). You're right though about the cardboard covers... I'd love to just make a mold and be able to duplicate them, though I don't have a clue how/where to start.

Revision, it loses less low-end then you'd think it does. I think what really causes the perception of a lot of low-end loss is the high amout of gain in the high end.

And yes, it sounds a lot like a Honda intake - which IMHO, just proves to me moreso that I'm doing it right (since Honda stuff has been tested and manufactured over and over and over again, they must have a decent idea of what's going on).

SubieFL, The coolant hose is to turn the intake up and actually get air shoved down it's throat. Not ram-air, but not quite cold-air either.

I left those mounting brackets where they were. The one on the driver's side was in the way a little, but it is just resting against it when mounted. I still use them to put the intake back on when it rains so I can put the whole box on without it just kinda cantilevering off the TB like it would be then.

Doesn't the air from the coolant hose bypass the air filter and therefore bring dirty air in to the engine? I might not be understanding the whole setup correctly. Which half of the air box did you use? and which hoses are connected?

Ahhhh ok... It might have been tought o see in the picture.

If you take a good look here, you can see how it fits together.

The coolant hose is stretched over the TB and turns upward, toward the scoop. The half of the intake plenum I used (the half that usually attatches to the TB, not the half with the hose out the side) slips over the coolant hose to effectively sit upward and suck air directly through the scoop.

I had thought of doing something similar, but trying to fit a 360 degree filter. It turned out to be too much work for me. You should try to make a rubber seal around the airfilter to get cold air only.

Thumbs up

Eek! It scares me...

Very clever though I must say. Talking about making a unique car more unique!

Disclaimer: Nothing can really be more unique than unique. If something is unique that is it...no adjectives/adverbs can modify it.

Cool

You may want to cover your cardboard pieces
w/ aluminum tape, available at most hardware stores, for heating ducts...no, not duct tape, but actual aluminum foil with a hi-temp glue...can you test the air temp going into the filter?

If your put a desecent (sp?) in the intake piping, it would help with the water problem theoretically. Wouldn't it?
