About a week or so later it did and is much more tolerable. It isn't stock silent but certainly much, much more solid as far as shift quality and power transfer. For the record, all of the mounts in my car are GrpN (Megan Kit) and I don't think it's that bad but everyone has a level that they prefer.

You can get Group N rally mounts as well that are even harder apparantly, I'm not that much of a masochist.

Great work! Now get on that e-brake cover and for the love of god clean your shifter cover - that's nasty.

That is true the Group N trans mount does "mellow" in with a little use.

IMO the Group N motor mounts do not add much NVH. Keep in mind my experience with the trans mount is combined with the rear Grp N shift bushing which some don't do. The combination does transmit quite a bit of the gearbox whine to the chassis.

There is a further "competition" Grp N trans mount for the 6MT beyond the "STI" branded part, for the 5MT there is only one performance part the "STI" and "Grp N" are the same part number.

Did the Kartboy rear shifter mount at the same time, what a PIA install! Should have done the Group N, would have been easier!

I agree, there is a bit of whine but it is acceptable for the outcome. Nice, accurate shifting trumps a little increase in noise for sure.

Didn't know that was it for the 5 speeds. I guess for the all-out guys, Beatrush, Cusco and whoever make a solid mount are their choices. Certainly not mine!

I almost purchased a hydro dipping set up, but my buddy sold his house and I lost his garage space I was going to rent. I hope someday to get into this, it's an amazing craft specially for the automotive world.

Hooray for you! So your personal preferences for NVH should be the baseline for everyone else?
I agree that we have different preferences, but your argument is the same as drilling the exhaust to make your car louder. Yes, you get what you want, but it doesn't mean it's good and safe for you/your car.

I wouldn't have replied in the first place, but I see more and more people adopting this 'model'. 5MTs are anyway sensible , and messing with the mounts won't do any good.

I don't intend to start a fight, but people should know that 'professional' mods like this one is at their own risk.

Personally, I'd prefer "strengthening" the stock 5MT mount by filling it in evenly than removing material from the Group-N mount via a asymmetrical method that may result in uneven material distribution (honestly, not that I'd do either). I can understand the pursue for a decrease in NVH though, right now my 1/2nd gear whine is the loudest sound my car makes with the GrpN mount.

I did address that earlier, the stock rubber would have trouble "capturing" the urethane that is why I did not do that. The stock Subaru trans mount is so open and deforms so readily, you run the risk of squeezing the urethane right out, since it doesn't compress.

That's a fair point, good you are there to protect everyone ;-) I think we can take a little liberty in the "custom mods" thread that those who might attempt it are up for the risk.

Let me ask you, how many aftermarket parts are crash tested for safety? You might be surprised at how shoestring the average aftermarket parts company is, there is not a lot of money in this business in many niches, you might not have the safety factor you think you do when "buying a part" vs. "modifying your own".

At any rate I drove with the modified mount for a couple years, never a problem, it is still sturdier than the stock one, and had more rubber to metal contact than the stock mount anyways. The risk here is overblown.

OK I'll shut up now so this can die and get back to the cool ideas...i.e. sanding off the blocked grille like the post above that is genius!!

I like pictures with no explanation!

What happens when your headlights are on? Do you have red headlights?

Here's my thread in the retro:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2237956

The angel eyes are my drl's the red eye effect is a single surface mount led mounted on the front face of the cutoff sheild. So when the headlights are on it would overpower the led.

However, currently the leds are not wired in permanently as I have yet to decide how I want it wired/ switched. But they are installed now at least.

^ I don't know about Canada but in the US the red lights on the front of your car would be popular with law enforcement.

as long as they don't strobe, and arn't bright enough to act as an actual light source, they won't care. I've got red parking lights and they don't give a hoot.

They aren't bright at all for starters an are visible at close angles. There is no strobe or flashing. And like I said they aren't wired yet. It will probably be on a separate switch and just be a "parking lot" feature for appearance sake. Not for driving.

Mind taking some over all pics of the car? I was considering doing the same, but in black.

How did you get the red wheel stripe so clean? This would look great with a red grill stripe.

I actually did the grill stripe earlier that day. I used 1/8" stripe and just free handed it as an experiment. I put these pictures up for feedback before I spend a lot of time on it.

There's a small lip that you can follow to make it pretty straight. I applied the stripes while the wheels were on the car, but I'll be taking them off to do a better job.

After going through the whole thread i declare this the winner. You need to join dirtyimpreza. To me the only ****ty mod is one thats not original.

Also, I say keep posting your mods ****ty or not, i like reading ppl bash on ****ty mods, and id say im not the only one who gets a laugh out of it. Makes for a nice mix

And if anyone remembers the 2 pages about 16 year olds with STIs and all that insurance talk, get a job kids. Its not your car unless you worked for it.

Thats my 2 cents so bring on the hate.....
