Question Clutch/Timing Work

Well I'm pretty sure I'm going to need it done here pretty soon. I've only had the clutch slip on me 3 times, twice when starting off from a dead stop and the other when giving it about 30% throttle passing someone on the freeway.

The car has 86k on it, so it'd probably be a good idea even if it isn't happening constantly yet. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to do it myself in my drive way with hand tools (yes it sounds like a dumb idea to me too), or if anyone knows someone that can do it pretty cheap (like a side job of some sort). I can stand to have the car out of commission if needed, so it doesn't have to be done all in one day since I have a second vehicle.

Also with the mileage that is on it, would it be worthwhile to have the timing belt done at the same time (would it possibly save me any money on labor in the long run) ?
Anyway if anyone has some ideas let me know.

If you pull the motor to do a clutch then a timing belt would be easy. But it doesnt need to be done until 103,000 miles.

If you have any mechanical ability at all, then you should just do it yourself. Its really not that hard at all.
I did mine about 2k miles ago in my driveway, I was expecting it to be super complicated, but what it came down to was loosening and tightening bolts (a lot of them)

Any one know if the timing for the o4 sti is the same for the 04 impreza wrx and how do you stop the cams from spinning when you remove the belt.

If you go with a clutch Look at South Bend Clutch, very solid quality and outstanding price.

I just replaced my clutch in my 04 WRX wagon and it was... interesting.

Don't look to the guides on NASIOC, I found around four of them together were very helpful, but alone just confused me or skipped steps.

You don't have to pull the motor, it helps ALOT when freeing the transmission from the motor itself but its a lot of work to get it out. Plus its a tight squeeze with it in there.

The hardest part of the install was getting the transmission to break free, after 75K of wyoming winters and road debris it was a challenge but nothing a giant pry bar at a slow steady pace couldn't fix

If you have the money, have someone do it for you. If you can't imagine your baby in the hands of someone else (my case) its not that bad, a 4 out of 5 in difficulty though.

The clutch I'm sure with enough time I could do as I've assisted in two others, but the timing is something I'm kind of iffy about simply because if it isn't done right then pop goes my valves if ya know what I mean. I've had a few recommendations from a lot of you, thanks. I'll be in contact with them. If anyone else has any suggestions I'm open to ideas.
