![]() Will the JL XR650CSI 6.5's(depth 2.8125) fit in the front doors of an '04 STi with East Coast Scooby Thick Spacers? I was leaning toward the focal 165V2 and CDT CL-61's but then listened to the JL's and liked them. I've read some say they need custom door cards and spacers. Whats the scoop? The spacers are cool, tweaking the door panel or innerds(window track etc....) I don't want to fool with.... What do you guys think?

![]() I put in those speakers last weekend. Originally I tried using just 3/4" spacers that I made, but they still didn't clear the window. I added on layers of sound deadening I had left over until they cleared. I ended up adding 3 layers. So I think it needs about a 1" spacer then. Also, I dremeled off whatever I could of the screw that holds the white nut to the window that's right behind the speaker. The East Coast Scooby spacers are 3/4" I believe.

![]() Cool, thanks. Does anyone know if the same is necessary for the CDT CL-61's or the Focal 165V2's?

![]() Those are the same components I am looking at. I don't have a WRX yet, but I'll be getting an 04 and already have two amps, a Pioneer HU, and 2 subs and box from my current car. I just need some good component speakers to finish. I listened to those JL's you mentioned and I like them. I am also looking into spacers.

![]() The place most are getting spacers is East Coast Scooby www.iaperformance.com. Check out his website, kits look real nice. Great reviews here on Nasioc. The JL's seem to be very good components but mixed reviews on what it took to get them in the '04's. I like the sound a lot, we have them at a local Tweeter.
The Focal and CDT's are on East Coast Scooby's fitment list. I'm interested in speakers that will fit with the iaperformance spacers and no alterations to the door. The focal's depth is not bad at all(~2.6772), the CDT's I'm having trouble finding mounting depth on - but if they are on the list we should be good. I've already ordered my spacers and will probably decide CDT or Focal soon(both require thick spacers). From reviews it sounds like focal might be more my style. If you find out any different about the JL XR's(depth 2.8125) fitting let me know. ![]() The members have been real helpful with posts and tips on systems. Huge help in narrowing down all the options. Hopefully we'll get some more responses on this thread and then decide. It seems like the focals would be closer to the sound of the JL's from reviews, CDT is warmer. Personal taste. Let me know if you find anything out. ![]() |

![]() It will be tight, but the if the JL's are a 2.81 depth then the thick spacers that are 2.83 will work.
http://www.iaperformance.com./images...plications.pdf We'll have to try and track someone down who has them in their car to know for sure. |

![]() Yeah, I've been searching. I had someone's thread printed for a while that used the JL XR's and wanted to PM him. He had an Alpine 7995 and all JL equipment. Mann, it was round filed and now I can't find the thread in a search. Ughh! First one to find something shout. I talked to East Coast Scooby and the depth is within the recommendation as you stated, he recommended trying the provided spacers. Cool guy.
I just got back from listening to the JL's and the MB Quartz PCE316's. Actually pretty similar, the highs are a little more distinct in the MB's I thought. Well time to continue searching. Have a good one! ![]() |

![]() Cool, sounds like we have similar tastes in components. I have not heard the MB Quarts yet, but I'm looking into the PCE 216. I want to hear some Focals really bad, but the closest dealer is kind of far away. I figure having too harsh of a tweeter isn't a big deal, since that's the reason for a crossover to change settings.

![]() I've listened to the MB Quarts and they sound good, similar to the JL's. I would love to listen to the Focal's also, no where close to be found yet. I'm going to keep calling some smaller shops within driving distance, hopefully find someone. I'll keep you posted. I PM'd a few guys last night that listed they used the XR650CSI's in their STi. Stay tuned.

![]() Th3Franz,
Hi, took a brake from the game for a second. I am still getting more info. on the JL XR650CSi's. Once I get the final answer I'll let you know. I did decide to go with the MB Quart PCE216's. I really liked the sound and they are on East Coast Scooby's fitment list. I highly recommend you give them a shout at www.iaperformance.com. They have been very good to deal with and responding to questions. Cool guy. They have complete kits for our cars. They are checking out sail pods for our cars now, and already have the kick panels. Check it out if you have not been there already. Seems like our taste is style of speakers are similar. I practically blasted people out of the local Tweeters just before closing(Hehe) to get a final listen before buying(between Jl's and MB's). Focal's would probably be cool too, just no listening time. Eh. Try out the MB's. Let me know what you think. Talk to you later. ![]() |

![]() Cool. Yeah once I hear some more speakers, I'll start narrowing down what I want to get. It'll be at least a month until I have a WRX, so I'm just taking my time anyway. On JL's web site, they have pictures of potential places to install the speakers. They show having the tweeter in a sailpod position and the midrange below it to be less desirable compared to both in the door. One would think that this would vary from car to car, as using a sailpod might make better imaging. I'm not sure, though.
So what made you decide to get the MB's, then? |

![]() I went and listened to them at Tweeter and put them head-to-head against the JL's. The MB's sounded sweet, about the brightness I tend to like that sound anyway. Plus we can always throttle it back, can't really take a warm speaker and brighten it that I'm aware of.... Member Clumsy1 said he bought the XL spacers for East Coast Scooby and the JL XR650CSi's fit fine, the rears he did not use any spacers. You're probably OK, but if I get anymore information I'll pass it on. The Tweeter had a good setup and the MB's just sounded a lil' better, high's more pronounced. Mid's were so close, slightly different but not enough that we would notice installed by themselves in the car. But speakers are such a personal choice thats why I strayed from highly recommended speakers(Focal and CDT) that I could not listen to first. I'm sure they are great speakers, but if I can't listen to them - can't justify the coin. I plan on taking a lot of pics during the install. Hollar if I can help in any way!

![]() Yeah I can get the JL's retail for cheaper than the MB Quarts I'm interested in. But, I still want to listen to the Quarts. Yeah, adjusting the crossover affects the sound a lot too, that's why it's probably fine if a tweeter is on the bright side, like you said.
