Default WTB: Non-interference EJ22 (complete or longblock) for a LeMons car

Hey gang, our 24 Hours of LeMons team had a rough weekend and we're needing *another* EJ22. We swapped out the trusty EJ18 from our car (298k miles on it!) for a new-to-us EJ22 trying to get some cheap power, but it turns out the guy who sold it to us was a lying bastard. Ok, he may or may not be a bastard, but he sure is a liar. This thing has a gnarly rod knock, we've been had!

Anyway, we're on the hunt for an EJ22 longblock or a complete engine on the cheap! We are looking for a non-interference engine specifically, we're running lots of high RPM stuff; if we lose a timing belt we can't afford bent valves. To give you an idea of what cheap means, the LeMons car can't cost more than $500 per the rules, and our two previous engines (one EJ18 and one EJ22) cost us $50 each. I'm open to parts trades or trade my labor (car work) for your engine.

We really aren't excited about putting the EJ18 back in there, we were excited to get a few more ponies, but the car needs to get running again soon. Even with one of the lowest powered cars on the track at Thunderhill (110 hp!) we still finished 17th out of 70. We're hoping with a little luck, a bit more power, and an actual pit strategy, we can get into the top 10 next year. Maybe with some luck it will rain this year, that makes winning a lot more likely in the Subie.

Let me know if you see any deals around or have an engine yourself, thanks!

Bryce

Cut your costs down more man, used crank and one rod from an EJ18/20/22. I'm sure someone has a spare crank and rod from some project. PM reddevil, he is in Portland also, he might have a spare EJ22 crank and rod laying around.

I thought about that, but even if I turned my crank and resized my rod(s) for free (or somebody gave me some) a new gasket set would cost more than getting another used engine. Thanks for the idea though!

Thanks for the tip Ben. John wants $650, a bit too rich for this beater...no love for the LeMons budget there! Cheapest I see on car-part.com is $350ish locally. Anybody know of any good u-pull yards around Portland? I've only been to a couple around here and they were pretty sparse, I've been spoiled by some awesome u-pull yards other places I lived in the past.

Unfortunately, that would be an interference engine Sparky. The non-interference engines are pre-97 (1990-1996).

Yup, option #3 is buying a wrecked car, pulling the powertrain, and selling/scrapping the rest. With 7 vehicles in the fleet right now, my girlfriend isn't too psyched about that option though. I don't know what her deal is, I don't even have any parked in the grass yet!?!

Back atcha reddevil! To those with comments on bad-assery above, yes, this race is BAD ASS. Best dollar:seat time event I've ever been involved in, although it is getting more expensive by the month as Jay and the crew increase safety requirements, transponder fees, etc. Fortunately, we've had some awesome teammates and crew members, and the car was rock solid last year and we hope continues with the same this year. Here are some pics from last year's race at Thunderhill:

http://jalopnik.com/photogallery/24HOLUber20/

We were "Team Festivus" thus the pole through the roof. Jessica sprayed some Subie stars on it minutes before the race started, this year we're probably going to use an actual WRC paint scheme. First things first though, I need an EJ22!

Default Ej22

I have a ej22 non interference I just pulled out. Valve noise but runs good. It is just the long block, no cam gears, no water pump etc. It has about 230K on it and was a daily driver before I pulled it. I could let it go for $150. Didn't use any oil. I put new head gaskets and valve cover gasket about 20K miles ago. Let me know. I live in the corvallis area.

Valve noise huh? Thanks for the offer Van, but we can't take a chance on funny noises with the endurance racing. The ej18 might not be a powerhouse, but it's funny-noise-free.

Bump...still on the hunt!

One more bump before I resort to the U-Pull engine lottery.
