Post Burning Oil Smell

Just purchaced a 98 GT 2.5 Wagon and it has a burning oil smell after driving for a while. Have had it to the dealer and they found no oil leaks. The axle seals have been replaced on the recall and I have steam cleaned the entire engine top & bottom...no leaks, yet the smell is still there. Dealer says it's the cosmoline they use for shipping and it takes a while for this to burn off....24,000 miles to burn off? Any help would be great.

Question

I sometimes smell gasoline after driving MY00 RS hard (not to hard). As soon as I get to my destination and open the door I can smell it.
Does this happen to everyone else?

SCooby2, I have the 2.5 GT Wagon too, newly purchased from it's first owner. There's nothing in the service records about a recall on the axle seals. Can you tell me more? When? What? Etc.

Add to previous post.

No burning oil smell, and I'm very familiar with the odor from oil leak in my 91 LS Wagon!

in my suby... sometimes when i change the oil it will drip between the exhaust minafold and the heat sheild. then it will smell for a while (depending on how much oil)

but if this isn't the case... i highly doubt it is still new engine smell after 24K.

AHA!!! That's probably what's happening in my car... I only smell it after I accelerate hard. And it's only on the driver's side. Let me know if you find out how to fix the problem. (I would really hate to goto the dealer for many reasons.)

Nasty smell after engine shut down appears to be an axle boot leaking on the header pipe on MY99RS. Just started after 22000 miles. I'm going to take it to the dealer to see if I can get it on warranty.
When the smell goes away it may mean the CV joint is dry

I've got a MY00 RS and noticed a burning oil smell a few days ago. After searching all over I finally found the source...grease from the front axel (drivers side) was leaking out of the front differential and dripping onto the exhaust piping causing the burnt oil smell.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Is this related to the axel seal problem?

I'm having a similar problem. I've got ~30k miles and had an oil change 400 miles ago, but it seems to be on the driver's side. Going to check the axle boot, possibly take it to the dealer. Might not be covered on warranty, as technically the axle boot is not an "internally lubricated mechanism" as the warranty says. We'll see . . .
