Default If not a rat snake...what is this then?



I thought it was a rat snake. But my friend who took the pic (in Maryland) said it's a Northern Water Snake. Now, I've seen too many water snakes already and the ones I've seen have patterns darker than this.

That doesn't look like any of the Water Snakes that I've kept. The ones I had all tended to be aggressive too.

Yeah, water snakes tend to be thicker than that and have broader heads, and italso probably wouldn't let you handle it like that. Think of them as wannabe poisonous snakes. I would put my money on rat snake.

Looks like a rat snake to me.
Corn snake is the same genus as the rat snake, they are very similar.

If the snake was biting the hand, I might think it was a water snake.
