Default Mail Order

I'm a newby...just bought a 2003 Sedan on saturday.

Who is everybody getting parts from?

all the mail order places want to RAPE you in shipping charges. One place was going to charge me 35 bucks to ship a shift knob. (probably 5 bucks total cost to send it USPS)

You'll want to plan ahead. Start thinking of the stuff you plan to do and combine your orders. Yes, Shipping parts up here is costly.

For parts, keep in mind what you want you're car to do. There is a fair used part supply and demand up here.

Happy shopping!

Congrats on buying a WRX! Shipping is rough up here, but like EatWRX said, try to combine your orders, especially if you buy large items that aren't heavy (like, a cat-back exhaust) with a downpipe and up-pipe and a UTEC and a short-throw shifter and STi injectors and a Walbro fuel pump and an MRT gearset and Kaaz differentials and and and....lol I'm just playin, but you get the idea.

One more thing. When you get shipping, please realize that 2nd day air may not equate to second day service. Talk with the distributer and find out if the parts are in stock, when they are going to ship. For my orders, my expectations were too high.

I know of several examples where it took forever to receive parts that were ordered with 2nd day air. Addiditionally, weekends, and holidays will affect the amount of time for delivery.

Don't get pissed if your package does this:

One thing I do is shop around. One place wanted $700 for a catback shipped, where another one wanted $600 shipped for it.

If you need something big shipped like a catback or tires/rims let me know I can get it bundled in a Carlile Transportation container and save a lot. Usually costs me about $10 to 20 dollars to get stuff shipped up here.
Most mail-order places will ship for free to lower 48 so I just get it shipped to Carlile's Washington Terminal and then get it bundled up here with a big shipment.

Yeah, I've lived here a long time so I am used to stuff going the wrong way before it gets here.

BUT

I have had great success in having people just drop stuff in the mail...(like a shift knob) there is no way I am paying 35 bucks to have one of those shipped.

off topic..does anybody else think the titanium STI shift knob is the worst possible ergonomic design?

It's one of the best knobs out there. With the other knobs they are either bulky, or full of foam/rubber/leather, which makes the knob "feel" less. With this one, it's metal to metal contact, so you feel every little notch in the gearbox. Your hand isn't on the knob all that long during a drive, so it never really gets uncomfortable.

I like the way you can feel the gearbox but in my hand, when shifting the hard edge of the knob cuts into my hand.

I'm hoping to find the momo ball that is aluminum. (and not have to pay 35 bucks for shipping)

Nah, I've had the Ti knob for like 7 months, and I'm completely used to it. I like it a lot better than just about any other knob. It's big enough that it's easy to get a grip on (compared to the ball-shaped ones), but it isn't super-stupid big. Although, I will admit that it gets really cold in the wintertime.

Shipping consolidator's are a good idea for the big items and they'll save you lots of cash. This site has a lot of good deals, too. Many times the vendors will work with you on the shipping. Check the private classifieds, too. Most people will use USPS for smaller parts.
