Your catalytic converter will not last the life of your car, federal law requires them to last for 50K miles, you will probably be lucky if the cat makes it to 150K.

How about opinions on BBS or OZ Racing Superleggera for my winter rims? The OZ's are magnesium/aluminum, and I've bent a lip before on potholes. How are the BBS's over potholes?

I would get a set of ROTAs for winter rims, either Tarmac 2's or SDR's, both fit over Brembos, both are pretty cheap and very strong, there is no need to spend a ton of money on winter wheels especially since the salt will not be kind to them.

EDIT: If you get a set of ROTAs, I would recomend www.subydude.com

The stock rims are light and strong, I don't doubt that they are much stronger than the Superleggaras. The SLs are among the lightest cast wheels available for a street driven Impreza, they won't compare favorably in strength tests against a forged wheel.

I agree with jewpac on that, rotas are a good winter wheel and very affordable.

ok, guess I'm wrong. apparantly the only thing on the car that is not a wear item is... well nothing. The entire car is a wear item.

I think the BBSs should be fine over potholes, but your winter tires will probably absorbe more shock anyway.

No, im not kidding. I knew there was a difference I just didn't know what the general difference in the thread pattern is between the difference.

.... but ... but its like routine maintenance... you know at certain mileage intervals you need new wipers, brakes, tires, hoses, clutch discs, forged aluminum rims etc.

Maybe not in a street driven context, but ask Gary Sheehan or Joel Gat if they think wheel sets don't need periodic changing. Like I said, this has been covered before.

I drove my Porsche Boxster with summer tires for 3 Winters, and never had a problem. I assumed that the STi would be comparable in handling with summer tires.

FYI, we really don't even have a Winter in the DC area, only 2-3 pseudo snow storms per year. Probably not really worth buying a new set of tires just for a couple of days of snow.

These are R-compound tires, did you read yoru owners manual? They arent supposed to be driven on in the cold. They grip well after they heat up, they will not work in cold/snowy condititons, you really should read your owners manual before you drive your new car.

didn't boxters come with some sort of Michelin Pilot variant? I doubt those have the wide tread blocks that the RE070 has.

I know they dont come with R-coumpund tires, I think they are performance M+S rated tires, similar to P7000's. The RE070's do not have an M+S rating and therefore are not suitable to be driven on in the snow.

For just over 10 years. Again I'm from Cape Cod, this isn't really what I'm used to calling snow here. Nor Easter's dumped so much snow on me in my lifetime, that I would prefer to never see another snowflake. These people get 3 inches of snow here and the whole city shuts down and people start filling up their bath tubs with water supplies.

I even took my driver's license road test in blizzard conditions. If I skidded even an inch, it's autofailure.

yeah I know what you mean. too many people freak out about the snow coming, and then don't know handle themselves while driving in it. you must've been here in 1996 when we got about 2 feet. It was like total chaos for a couple weeks.

You don't need winter tires, just some decent All Seasons that are M+S rated and run them from Nov. to Feb/March. They'll last for a few years, espcially if you have them on different rims (like Roats)... takes about 10 min to replace all 4 in your driveway.

Is it worth getting into an accident with a new car becuase you didn't 'want to' change the tires. It's in the drivers manual, and told to you at time of pruchase they are not winter tires.

Please stop driving your STi before you crash it and cause my insurance rates to reach the stratosphere. Jesus, you're making my head hurt.

Your summer tires will be hard as rock in 30 degree weather. Darwin, you been on vacation again, or what?

check the side wall for the tire rating. Thread patterns of all high performance all season can look like summer tires.
Ive never used snow's.

Actually, I was in Key West for a 10 day college road trip, and missed most it. We slept in the car to save $$, so we didn't even know that the storm happened until we started getting closer to home on the drive back. Then it was fun parallel parking through snowbanks for about 2 weeks afterward.
