I always get so excited when I see threads like this pop up.

Then the disappointment comes when I notice it is completely unfounded and filled with the typical bickering and bench racing.

It was Toyota's flagship car for a decade, and it should be back in the lineup. There are not many late 90's cars that still look good today, and the Supra is one of them.

Toyota Supra And BMW Z4 Set To Benefit From Each Other's Hybrid Experience

Despite the time taken to come to fruition, both BMW and Toyota are frantically working behind the scenes to bring their respective collaborative sports cars to production.

Dating back as far as 2013, the agreement between the two companies sees them join forces to develop a sports car platform which will form the basis of the next BMW Z4 and reborn Toyota Supra.

Unlike the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ twins which are almost identical in their looks and specifications, the collaboration between Toyota and BMW is likely to yield bigger differences between the two respective models.

Scratch a little deeper though and it seems that both companies will share engine and drivetrain technology based on the experience both automakers have gleaned from their previous hybrid models.

Because the agreement between BMW and Toyota focuses on hybrid and hydrogen development for other models as well as a sports car chassis, it seems that the arrangement has lead to a hybrid performance solution for the upcoming joint performance car.

Toyota FT-1 Concept - precursor to the new Supra

As reported by Auto Express both cars will likely be powered by a selection of BMW’s range of turbocharged petrol engines, with the Z4 likely to offer four and six-cylinder options, while the Supra will stick with an inline six.

A Toyota-developed sports hybrid system will also chip in assistance to the front and rear axles with a derivative of the technology found in Toyota’s TS050 Le Mans racer, with battery power stored in lithium ion cells.

BMW's existing plug-in hybrid system

The Supra also appears likely to introduce Toyota’s first ever dual-clutch transmission, a technology that BMW has already been using in its M cars for years.

Release dates for the two sports cars are still some way off however, with a 2017 debut expected for both vehicles.

Toyota will likely unveil a more production-ready revision of the 2014 FT-1 concept before the final production Supra breaks cover, while BMW may offer a thinly-veiled ‘Vision’ concept before the next generation Z4 makes it to production.

"have gleaned from their previous hybrid models"

I'm sad that we're gonna have to go through this dumb transition period of half-gas/half-electric cars. I hope I can skip it by riding the evo out until good batteries arrive and make gas obsolete.

as much as i would like to see it, there's no f***ing way. a Supra cost more than that back in the early 90's.

I'm with you, but it's what will happen for the time being; although honestly full electric isn't too far off. I always fall back on the (forthcoming) Tesla model 3 - reasonable range with reasonable performance for a reasonable price. 0-60 in under 6 seconds, 215 miles of range, 35k+/- price tag. Real world range on my WRX is about 300-330miles at time of fill up, however if I could let my WRX fill up at night in my garage instead of stopping for gas once a week I certainly would.

I believe my WRX will last until I can get a model 3 or one of it's (non-existent) competitors. The model 3 would cover at least 90% of my driving, with only the once/twice a year outlying drive to Moultonborough, NH from central CT at 230 miles on way. I might even be able to make that work with one quick-charge stop on the way in Worcester as we stop for food anyways. The only somewhat-unknown is battery degradation over the life of the vehicle in New England; I'm not a "3-years and trade-in" car person, I'm a buy it and run it until it makes more financial sense to replace it (or until I get bored of it).

maybe I get a Tesla model 3 and my wife gets a Prius so we can take that on long journeys instead, since she clearly doesn't care about cars. I don't know, time will tell, but full electric is coming.

I don't think it would be wise for Toyota to bring up any association with Le Mans in their marketing for the Supra successor (never mind the reasons behind their recent failures at Le Mans). At least that's how most other car manufacturers talk up their sports cars by associating them with winning race/series efforts. Unless they actually win the thing between now and when the new Supra actually goes into production.

BMW Z4 ends production next month and expect a New Z5 (Supra shared platform) into production later in year and the Toyota later in 2017 as 2018 model. I hope they keep price down cause that's what killed the last one along with TT Z and RX7 and a few others,

The next Supra is a evergreen myth along with the next Bronco, RX-7, and mid engine Corvette. I'll believe it when I see it.

Nah, it's happening this time. We know they have been working on the platform with BMW for years, we know that platform is now ready, we know about the FT-1 concept, we know Toyota has been reregistering the Supra trademark around the world (including Europe just last month), and we know it actually got the green light early this year. It's definitely coming.

I'd bet dollars to donuts it's at Tokyo Auto Salon; or at least a production-realistic and probably Supra-badged (rather than FT-whatever) concept will be. We're definitely past the pie-in-the-sky concept stage all the past concept maybe-Supra's have stalled at since the mkIV.

The only question is how good it is and what price range they are targeting; I'm guessing at ~Corvette-level pricing based on all the rumors.

Let's hope its not priced anywhere near the new NSX territory or follow the GT-R's path of starting as a great $/performance car to constantly ballooning in price yearly.

Is it really happening this time? Yeah, considering it's size, it could be also be the next GT86.

Possibly. But the long hood tells me there's something in there larger than a flat 4.

And the brakes are pretty big, as well as the wheels.

I see more BMW in the car then anything from Toyota. Its has a BMW interior. A lot of the body lines look like a Z4 of some sorts.

Sorry, I don't think this is a Supra. It's really FT86 sized, just with upgraded brakes. The BRZ also has a long-ish hood.

What I can see is how they derived the Supra from the Celica. (Used to be Celica Supra). Maybe they're planning on a FT86 Supra.

You're probably right.

But regardless of what it is, I'm sure it'll be interesting.

Also has wheels similar to the M4 GTS and instrument gauges like other BMW's. Even more reason to think this is the Supra and not an 86.

It also looks a good deal bigger/taller than the 86 which would be totally dwarfed by that minivan behind it which it is not.

Another thing you can see it follows the general shape and look of the FT-1 even tho it's a LOT smaller. I saw these comparo pics.

Good eye. Hmmm....

That's not a real minivan on the side though. But yeah, comparing to the car in front, which is an older Opel Meriva, with a height of 64".

BRZ is only 50"+... you may be on to something. OK. I'll buy it.

I wouldn't be too disappointed.

The headlights and tail lights are most likely not production.

And it's probably missing some aero. Or the front bumper is either not production or has a lot of padding on it.

This is not the BRZ; it has a BMW interior. Lexus-style gauges. Looks like there is a 7k redline so maybe a B48 or B58 is in there? BMW and Toyota have talked about a sports car collaboration in the past and this seems to be it. Looks like a mashup of the Z4 M coupe and the FT-1 concept.

I'm guessing the rear tails are just slapped on there and the camo is hiding curved LED's on those awkward-looking flares. That'd be in line with the FT1 concept.

Also betting the headlights are just stuck on there, they look way too bland for what's supposed to be a halo sports car. But then again, Toyota IS the king of bland...

Side profile of the front bumper reminds me of the older 911's with the fried egg lights.
