Default VW R models' new ESP system

Quote:
Volkswagen has equipped its most potent Golf GTI and R models and its entire Scirocco range with a new ESP system that allows the driver to fully disable electronic aids.

VW has responded to criticism from media and customers that said the models were not adjustable or sporting enough, were too sensible compared with rivals and did not allow the driver full control of the vehicle.

All 2012 model year Sciroccos and Golf GTIs and Rs built from May will be fitted with the new system and will reach showrooms from July. The new ESP set-up is a two-stage system that controls traction control and braking. Pressing the ESP off button once will disable the traction control, while holding it in for more than three seconds will fully disable both traction control and electronic braking systems.

The system will only cut back in should the driver press the brake pedal in the middle of an ‘emergency’, be it if control of the vehicle is lost by the driver or if they want the car to straighten up by itself. If the brake pedal is not depressed by the driver the ESP system will remain inactive.

The new ESP system is a standard fit to all Scirocco models, plus the Golf GTI and R, and is available for no extra cost over the standard car. There are no plans to fit to the Polo GTI at this stage however.

I think the question is how far the brake pedal has to travel while the car is being 'upset', as it's a really bad thing to be hitting it HARD while on the edge of traction anyways.

I don't think just tapping it, or left foot braking, will really turn it back on. And also, I bet if you're going straight and nail the brakes, I bet it won't turn back on either, as you're not really upsetting the car.

However, using the brake to turn it back on in the 1st place is not a great idea, and can cause more problems on track than just having it stay off in the 1st place, mid corner.

I think this is good regardless... you just have to trace back how the brake turns it off and disconnect that sensor/ switch. Someone will figure it out either via a mechanical or electrical bypass.

Hmm I like they added the option of disabling traction control and ABS.

I seriously am warming up to the new Golf R.

the esp was the the reason i was thinking of not getting the Golf R, i now may change my mind but i am worried on how much brake is required to turn it back on. some bigger autox's require some trail braking on the sweepers to square the corner especially with ones that are decreasing radius' but I am also going to have to wait and see if the wrx will change face again.

So basically you can put it in a sort of sport mode, but you press the brake and it's back to traction control etc mode? It sounds like a "safe" sport mode to me where you can't fully get into the fun of it.
