Knocking a few percent of a 3.5L X5 isn't going to drive volume.
You want volume, send us a Mini-D and a 123d. |

A 335d is looking like a hard sell when you can buy a Jetta TDi, similar in size, for $20k less. Granted, a VW isn't a BMW, but Jetta TDis are as loaded as they come option wise. I could sacrifice the performance for $20k and better fuel economy.

335d vs a Jetta?
People looking at a 335d don't have a Jetta anywhere near their shopping list! |

The premium is too steep right now. A 335d costs way more than a 328i.

BMW is currently offering $4500 off the diesels until November. This was much needed and I think it will entice a lot of potential buyers, myself included!

Wow, in this economy they'd sell... Hundreds of those in the US.

i still don't get the X6. but then again there are a lot of cars i don't get. for instance, who is the target buyer of a civic coupe? it's not a sports car. it's not practical when compared to a sedan or a hatch, and it's likely to be the young owner's sole ride. it's not super cheap. why then?

^ it's a coupe (which attracts the younger crowd) and it's also one of the cheaper 4 seater coupes avalible. Among many other reasons of course

X6 and 5 series GT. Not to mention the X5M and X6M. I just don't know what the hell BMW is thinking these days.
Putting a disel in the 5 GT isn't going to help sales. A 123D or Mini D would do fairly well. |

Instead of cutting prices (which is nice in and of itself) of the higher powered diesels, just offer the lower powered ones along side. I'd love to be able to buy a 318d/320d or a 118d/120d.

But for most people it's all about style. Chevy sold plenty of those dreadful Monte Carlo coupes to people who just HAD to have a 2-door. It's the same reason people will buy an SUV but won't touch a wagon or minivan. Edit: Oh, and I'd be all over a 120d 5-door or 323d wagon. BRING IT! |

BMW is positioned as a premium brand here; models are chosen to keep prices high or we'd have 320Ds all over the place for the cost of a WRX or less.

BMW is a premium brand in the UK too and they have 318d's.
I would love a 335dx with a manual gearbox please. I'm probably one of the 7 people here that like the X5 and X6 hatches. ~15 years ago BMW had commercials on TV in England where a guy was hand writing a letter on top of a running diesel engine. Point was to advertise the smoothness and volume their diesel engines. BMW diesels were so good, GM sourced them to power Opel and Vauxhall Omegas rather than develop their own. We are at least a generation on now. These are going to be fabulous vehicles that will shake a non believer rigid. |

fuel costs in the UK are heavily influenced by tax. nearly 2/3 of the cost is tax. this induces an artificial MPG focus, making diesels more appealing.
when you have a more direct cost of fuel, as in the US, the savings aren't enough to tip the scales generally. |

BMW 335d Six-Month Test Report and Review
BMW has a 4500 incentive now on the 335D
In the first six months of 2010, 41% of buyers chose the 335d versus the 335i with sales of 1544 units. In April and again in June 2010, the BMW 335d outsold the 335i by a ratio of 6 to 5 and 7 to 5 respectively Quote:

It's surprising that sales are up more than the 335i. I've yet to see another one on the road besides the dealership. It looks like BMW is finally keeping up with demand. When I was shopping for mine late last year it was very hard to even find a dealership that had one to test drive.

I see a LOT of 335d's on the road on my daily commute. Far more than 335i's.
I'm with the folks who would like the ability to purchase a 320d. |
