Default BMW North America is looking to cut prices of its diesel-powered vehicles

Quote:
If diesels are priced right, there’s going to be a market for it, according to BMW North America CEO Jim O’Donnell who is seeking to get the board of directors in Germany to reduce MSRPs on diesel-powered models. O’Donnell wants to cut its price premium while installing more features to its diesel-run vehicles in order to increase sales.

Currently, BMW North America offers the X5 35d and 335d, which are selling well but O’Donnell believes could be better. He thinks that too much of a premium has been added. He stated that his ideal premium would be just under $2000 for the X5 35d. Current premium for the sports activity vehicle is around $4000.

If the directors do decide to approve the proposal, they’re going to have to be willing to absorb the cost. Diesel technology is expensive compared to regular combustion engines and will have to be covered by the manufacturer if premiums are to be reduced.

O’Donnell believes that most cost can be offset with higher volumes and higher sales. In addition, O’Donnell is asking to allow the importation of cars with more features such as all-wheel drive. He hopes that by 2011, we will have a 3 Series featuring the technology. The CEO is working on the belief that American buyers are becoming more aware of the advantages of diesel and other technologies

Knocking a few percent of a 3.5L X5 isn't going to drive volume.

You want volume, send us a Mini-D and a 123d.

A 335d is looking like a hard sell when you can buy a Jetta TDi, similar in size, for $20k less. Granted, a VW isn't a BMW, but Jetta TDis are as loaded as they come option wise. I could sacrifice the performance for $20k and better fuel economy.

335d vs a Jetta?
People looking at a 335d don't have a Jetta anywhere near their shopping list!

The premium is too steep right now. A 335d costs way more than a 328i.

BMW is currently offering $4500 off the diesels until November. This was much needed and I think it will entice a lot of potential buyers, myself included!

Default Bring the BMW 5-series GT 530d

Three-litre diesel has 242bhp and 398lb ft of torque

Quote:
What is it?

The X6 is all well and good, so is the 7-series and so is the 5-series Touring. BMW insists, though, that if you make a triangle out of those three cars, the car that fills the space in the middle will be perfect for a lost generation of potential buyers who want some of each car, but not all.
So the 5-series Gran Turismo was built specifically to mop them up and, BMW evangelistically claims, to create an entirely new market segment – something the car industry really hasn’t managed since the Renault Scenic.
So BMW’s got big claims behind this car, but it actually does offer 7-series front and rear leg room, luxury and entertainment features, as well as X5 head room, monster luggage space and cracking new engine and gearbox technology.
What’s it like?

All of that evangelism can turn you off a car before you even drive it, but that would be a mistake with this car.
For starters, there’s the technology. It has the latest generation of 3.0-litre diesel, which is expected to comfortably outsell the 535i GT in Europe. It deserves to as well, because it has 241bhp of power at 4000rpm and 398lb ft of torque from 1750 to 3000rpm.
It will help that it’s the cheapest Gran Turismo, but it’s also the best of the GT’s engine range.
But while it’s not the fastest, it never actually feels wanting. Our side-by-side charges showed the 535i consistently pulling away, even in rolling in-gear sprints, but the 530d version was never humbled as it smoothly charged through its eight gears, swapping seamlessly regardless of whether the brilliant new transmission was in its softest or sportiest settings.
BMW claims it will pull 43.5mpg on the EU combined cycle, but we didn’t come close to that. In fact, we comfortably halved it without even trying and, with only a 70-litre tank, the GT might be stopping to refuel more than we’d like.
Short-range tank apart, it will be a legendarily good cruiser. The engine idles at 700rpm, and at 62mph it’s only ticking over at 1350rpm. At 80mph it’s only pulling 1700 revs – which isn’t even at the torque peak yet – and at 124mph it’s still only around 2200rpm. Relaxed? You bet.
If the driveline is comfortable, the cabin backs it up, and then some. It will be the tank dictating your stops, not your back. The seats are brilliant, with soft initial cushioning and firm support beneath it – and that goes for all four of them (a bench seat, with a strictly temporary middle seat, is actually standard).
It’s almost better in the back, too. It sits on exactly the same wheelbase (and tracks) as the 7-series, so there’s plenty of space, but it’s been cleverly worked on. The design of the dash and front doors flows beautifully into the rear, where the seats adjust fore and aft individually and so do their backrests. And BMW has rediscovered the joy of oddments storage space in the cabin.
BMW makes much of the rear hatch, which has a small opening that doesn’t crack the passenger bulkhead and a big one that does, but the important thing is that the space is very flexible, with up to 1700 litres with the rear seats folded down.
All of that would mean nothing if the chassis wasn’t this astonishingly good. At 1960kg, the 530d GT has every excuse to be a floppy mess. It isn’t.
Dynamic Drive Control, which tweaks the gearbox, throttle and steering maps and the dampers, is standard and ranges from Comfort to Sport+ programs. Forget the extremes (Comfort is too wallowing and Sport+ is too aggressive on bump) and keep it inside Normal and Sport and you’ll find a terrific chassis lurking here.
It’s balanced, it never gets unsettled, it’s quiet, the ride quality is brilliant and there’s so much poise that it’s difficult to imagine how you’d ever throw one away, aside from falling asleep in it.
Its only noticeable flaw – and, even then it’s magnified out of all proportion by the quality of everything else it does – is the thumping noise out of the rear suspension as the air spring pushes its shaft back down on broken, square-edged holes. It’s like that, we were told, because the spring rate has been set for the car to run at its maximum load, which is 600kg heavier than as tested.
Should I buy one?

BMW 5-series GT picture gallery
That depends on a lot of things about you, such as what you need, what you don’t need and how big your parking space is.
Don’t automatically nay-say it, though, because it doesn't feel like a 5-series and it doesn't feel like an X5, either. The driver’s hip point sits exactly between them, and so does the whole feel of the car.
The front suspension is pure 7-series, the rear is from the next generation of 5-series Touring and somehow they’ve been combined to make the GT feel as though it does indeed occupy its own turf, yet it still feels like a BMW.
It ends up being a car that is just so crackingly good that you forget everything BMW has tried to convince you of and just respect is as a superbly engineered machine. Because it is.
Definitely a drive-it-before-you-discount-it proposition.
Michael Taylor

i still don't get the X6. but then again there are a lot of cars i don't get. for instance, who is the target buyer of a civic coupe? it's not a sports car. it's not practical when compared to a sedan or a hatch, and it's likely to be the young owner's sole ride. it's not super cheap. why then?

X6 and 5 series GT. Not to mention the X5M and X6M. I just don't know what the hell BMW is thinking these days.

Putting a disel in the 5 GT isn't going to help sales. A 123D or Mini D would do fairly well.

Instead of cutting prices (which is nice in and of itself) of the higher powered diesels, just offer the lower powered ones along side. I'd love to be able to buy a 318d/320d or a 118d/120d.

Personally, I'm with you. But I'm practically minded enough to buy a wagon.

But for most people it's all about style. Chevy sold plenty of those dreadful Monte Carlo coupes to people who just HAD to have a 2-door. It's the same reason people will buy an SUV but won't touch a wagon or minivan.

Edit: Oh, and I'd be all over a 120d 5-door or 323d wagon. BRING IT!

BMW is positioned as a premium brand here; models are chosen to keep prices high or we'd have 320Ds all over the place for the cost of a WRX or less.

BMW is a premium brand in the UK too and they have 318d's.

I would love a 335dx with a manual gearbox please.

I'm probably one of the 7 people here that like the X5 and X6 hatches.

~15 years ago BMW had commercials on TV in England where a guy was hand writing a letter on top of a running diesel engine. Point was to advertise the smoothness and volume their diesel engines. BMW diesels were so good, GM sourced them to power Opel and Vauxhall Omegas rather than develop their own. We are at least a generation on now. These are going to be fabulous vehicles that will shake a non believer rigid.

fuel costs in the UK are heavily influenced by tax. nearly 2/3 of the cost is tax. this induces an artificial MPG focus, making diesels more appealing.

when you have a more direct cost of fuel, as in the US, the savings aren't enough to tip the scales generally.

Default BMW 335d Six-Month Test Report and Review

BMW has a 4500 incentive now on the 335D

In the first six months of 2010, 41% of buyers chose the 335d versus the 335i with sales of 1544 units. In April and again in June 2010, the BMW 335d outsold the 335i by a ratio of 6 to 5 and 7 to 5 respectively

Quote:
The roughly 400 km (249 mile) drive from New York City to Washington D.C. and back (another 400 km) used most – but not all – of the Montego Blue BMW 335d’s fuel, reported Paul Riegler, our contributing editor.

In terms
of fuel economy, the 335d used 6.0 l/100 km (39 mpg) on the traffic free trip, with speeds ranging from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 130 km/h (80 mph).

“No need to stop for refueling,” Paul’s notes read.
How many other cars with 425 pound-feet of torque can you say that about?

Contrast this with the same drive taken with a BMW 335i sedan at the same time, similarly equipped with automatic transmission. That car used 9 l/100 km (26 mpg) for a total of 72 l (19 gallons). One refueling stop was required. The 335d only used 48 l (12.6 gallons), delivering over 50% better fuel economy.

Since picking up the BMW 335d at the BMW Welt a little over six months ago,

I continue to be amazed at how quiet the car can be, even at very high speeds. Driving the car at 220 km/h (137 mph) for extended periods of time simply reinforced this observation.

Despite the 86 kg (191 pound) weight penalty compared to the 335i sedan, BMW maintained a front-to-rear weight distribution of 51-49. Turn-in is excellent and the handling and control don’t seem to suffer at all from the additional weight.

The unique combination of sports-car acceleration with exemplary fuel economy was something we noted in our Three-Month Review and this sets the BMW 335d apart from the other diesel-powered autos available in the U.S.

We expect, however, that the 335d will have some company within the next eight to ten months. BMW of North America will soon import a 5er Series diesel and, if it’s the 535d, as many suspect, it will join the 335d in providing this unique type of Freude am Fahren.

Indeed, the 535d goes from 0-100 km (0-62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds (faster than the 335d, which travels the same distance in six seconds) and uses just 6.1 l/100 km (38.5 mpg) in the European combined test cycle (less fuel than the 335d, which uses 6.7 l/100 km (35 mpg) in the same test).
Comparing for a moment the two 335 3er Series, the 335i is definitely a bit quicker off the line: 0-60 mph is 5.6 seconds, while the 335d takes 6.0 seconds to travel the same distance. The 335d, however, produces 425 pound-feet of torque between 1750 and 2200 rpm compared to the 335i’s 300 pound-feet between 1400 and 5000. The 335d’s massive amount of torque is available for overtaking on demand and can propel the car to from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 130 km/h (80 mph) in what feels like a split second.

THE 335D DRIVING EXPERIENCE
We continue to marvel over the driving experience of the 335d. At the heart of this experience is what BMW calls Sequential Twin Turbo Technology, more commonly referred to as twin turbos. The small turbocharger is optimized for quick throttle response at low engine speeds, where it develops boost and extra power, responding to even the slightest movement of the accelerator. As the engine speed increases,

the second, larger turbocharger comes online as well and both turbos work together. At higher engine speeds, boost comes exclusively from the larger turbo, which is where the maximum torque of 425 pound-feet at 1750 rpm comes from.
Despite its power, the 335d is cleaner, exhaust-wise, than most cars on the road. BMW utilizes urea (AdBlue in BMW speak) injection in the exhaust to reduce nitrous-oxide emissions. This system works in conjunction with a diesel particulate filter that allowed the 335d to meet emissions requirements in all 50 states. In terms of carbon dioxide, the 335d emits 174 g/km versus the 335i’s 202 g/km. BMW includes urea refills in the BMW Ultimate Service program that provides free maintenance for the first four years of ownership or 50,000 miles. It’s important to note that the 335d has sacrificed very little in terms of storage space despite the additional diesel and emissions technology.
Speaking of diesel fuel, unlike in Austria and Germany, not every filling station in the U.S. has it

(the percentage varies by region but my experience tells me that about 60% of stations I’ve seen have it). This hasn’t proven to be a problem, however, as BMW Online will not only identify nearby stations with diesel but provide current pricing and turn-by-turn directions.

Ownership for the first six months has been trouble free. The only time the car had to visit the BMW workshop was when we mounted winter tires and wheels this past January. The 2010 flat tire monitor sensors (we found out) are incompatible with earlier sensors, so this resulted in an error message that was quickly diagnosed. We opted to run with the older sensors and ignore the error message for a few months since the winter tires had already been mounted and balanced on the wheels.

Other than that, the only other maintenance was to swap tires. The Pirelli Winter 210 Sottozero winter performance tires came off the car in April and on came the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires that the car was delivered with. The PS2s were almost brand new as we ran the car on Goodyear Ultra Grip

winter tires in Germany and immediately fitted the Pirellis upon the car’s arrival in the States.

Car enthusiasts are noticing the BMW 335d and sales are up appreciably. In the first six months of 2010, 41% of buyers chose the 335d versus the 335i with sales of 1544 units. In April and again in June 2010, the BMW 335d outsold the 335i by a ratio of 6 to 5 and 7 to 5 respectively.

Driving the 335d has been a very satisfying and entertaining exercise over the past six months. Despite the vast number of incredible cars I have driven since getting the 335d (an average of one per week, ranging from the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 to the Audi A3 TDI to the Honda Fit), nothing puts a smile on my face the way this one does.

It's surprising that sales are up more than the 335i. I've yet to see another one on the road besides the dealership. It looks like BMW is finally keeping up with demand. When I was shopping for mine late last year it was very hard to even find a dealership that had one to test drive.

I see a LOT of 335d's on the road on my daily commute. Far more than 335i's.

I'm with the folks who would like the ability to purchase a 320d.

I bought an X5 35D last year and got over $8k off msrp newest model. Shoppers are rewarded : D so don't be ez in these economic times. Also note 35D owners. They did a new ecu upgrade and I lost 2mpg
