Either the night before snow is in the forecast or before the temperature is consistently 40 and below.

Is it bad to be driving around dry roads with snow tires?

I guess part of it depends on how well you're set up to do it. I plan on waiting till the weather is consistently cold. Warm weather and snow tire don't mix all that well.
My tires are all mounted - I just pull in the garage, get the hydraulic jack and and change tires.

I guess it also depends on what you're running around on during the non-winter months! If I was still on the RE-92s, I prolly would have changed to winter already just to get some better grip in the rain. But since I'm running a summer tire with really good rain grip, I'm going to wait till I see a flake to swap to winters.

Plus, the BBS RKs are alot more ghetto-fab than the stockers wheels.

RE-92s are going back on this weekend, hopefully for their last tour of duty!

it's suppossed to get into the 20s this weekend, so the first snow probably isn't far away.

Wow you guys are way to paranoid. I'm running my 17's with my Sumitomo's all the way up until there are 2 inches of snow on the ground, then I'll put on the snows. And then when the pavement is dry I'll put the 17's back on. There is no reason to drive around on snow tires all winter when there isn't any snow.

Paranoid? Or smart?

Summer tires are hard as rocks in freezing weather, you should know that. And it's impossible to predict if there will be ice or not.

OMGHi2U

once we start getting consistent like 40 degree and lower weather, snow or not, my kumho's gotta go. they ride like blocks in cold weather like that. it's not fun.

snow and ice is a nightmare... i won't be stupid enough to experience that.

umm yeah if you say so G, I drove from LI to Albany on my summer tires in a snow storm at speed and had few problems. Maybe it's just my tires or maybe it's just that I'm insane but either way my snows don't go on until there is actually snow on the roads.

I used to drive an M3 with over 300hp and no traction control or abs brakes in the snow with 255 bridgestone so3's. i bet even with my crap-o i mean kumho tires i'll be much better off than what i used to do. i've learned my lesson, if it snows more than a couple inches its not worth driving. besides i think i've done enough donuts for one lifetime

Okay, if you say so then.

Anybody have a G-tech? We can do some skidpad testing with snow and summer tires in the dry when it's 30 deg out.

Guys,

High performance tires are Summer Tires. So when the temperature drops you lose traction due to the fact that the rubber compound is not designed to deal with cold temperatures. For that reason I run performance winter tires which are designed to be run in cold weather.

Z, you are crazy to run around like that on Sumotumo's.

As far as when I change I wait for the daily high's to be consistent below 40 degrees.

Yes this is a known fact, I'm also Fu(kin' nuts too, according to Pat the redneck Asian, I'm also a menace according to the judge. And yes I was biting my nails as I was driving in those conditions

Either way I'm not taking off my 17's until I see snow on the road. It's pointless to burn up a good set of snow tires on non snow covered roads. I would much rather have the lack of sidewall flex that I get with my 17's than the lack of grip and stearing input and grip that you get with a snow on dry pavement.

Sounds like Z should get a set of performance snow tires instead of the wobbly tire truck off road deep snow kind.

Yes good point Garrick I do need to get new tires soon. I'm gonna have to pick up two sets though. One for street and one for ice racing but either way they are going on as late as I can wait.
