Interestingly.. I just went to re-read Subaru's press release from back in January and the link is dead now. It worked a couple weeks ago..

http://media.subaru.com/pressrelease...ful-model-ever

Even the "Read the press release" link from Subaru's website is bad.

https://www.subaru.com/2019-S209

I wonder if changed specs (ie the lack of forged internals) caused them to pull the press release.

I just read this article over on Autoblog:

https://www.autoblog.com/2019/09/26/...i-s209-review/

I can't believe they elected against "forged internals" at the last minute - clearly, this was done to keep the cost of the car down. Pricing wise, I'd expect this to land around $60k sticker / destination and dealers will probably start with $5-10k+ markups.

Does this mean the S209 will have the same internals as that Type RA & 19+ STI?

The forged internals were a huge selling point for track abuse and anyone that wanted to push the power limits of the stock block further. The EJ207 would have been a better choice then.

I wonder if Killer B will still be pursuing their S209 purchase..

I don't think we'll know, for sure, until someone manages to break one of those blocks apart, but it sure appears like it - aside from some valve train changes.

The removal of the forged internals really put a dent in my desire for an S209; however, I'm still going to make an effort to obtain one, but I won't be upset if doesn't work out.

I'm not in a hurry to take a bath on my 7.1 mile RA, while chasing an S209, that'll be marked up into oblivion, and it all sounds less and less like a worthwhile proposition.

Worst case scenario.. purchase all of the cool S series chassis bracing from the S209 (if you like OEM parts) and invest in quality tires. I don't really see the HKS turbo as a huge advantage given the price.

I like OEM upgrade parts and was debating on buying the S series mufflers for my '19 STI.. but Jalopnik really seems to dislike them.

With the RA, I would prefer to keep it as OEM / STi Japan as possible - perhaps with the exception of an exhaust. So a lot of the chassis parts would be the route I'd go, plus I should be able to pick them up at the dealership now.

I noted Jalopnik had nothing nice to say about the S209's exhaust and I, personally, after watching as many videos of it as possible was left quite underwhelmed. I mean if I were to be spending a premium over my RA, I would at least like it to sound like something. The S209 sounds like a broken dyson and my RA isn't much better either.

Same - kept waiting to hear good sounds emit from the S209 exhaust and was left wanting.

Then again I think my Nameless muffler deletes are too quiet

I think I'd rather go with the Cobb or HKS titanium exhaust.. it would match the CF weight savings theme and gain a bit of sound. I'm just not a huge fan of burnt titanium exhaust tips.

Another picture of the rear upper flexible draw stiffener.

Quote:
There's a second flexible draw stiffener in the trunk, too, protected by a pink bar so that owners don't accidentally smack the thing when loading up the trunk.

The pink bar itself doesn't do anything other than protect the actual draw stiffener behind it. Better safe than sorry.

Yep, they're all numbered 000/000.

I wonder if these were made before or after they decided not to go with the forged pistons..

These are press cars and I wouldn't be surprised if these cars all have "forged" internals and are not in fact representative of what the consumer will actually be getting.

It's disappointing Subaru waited until the last minute to do a bait and switch with the guts of the motor, no wonder I couldn't locate the link with all of the modifications the S209 received, because they killed the most meaningful ones off.

Disappointing. They pulled down the initial press release and opened a FAQ. Lame.

2019 STI S209 FAQ

What is the difference between S209 and Type-RA STI derivatives?
While both vehicles used the WRX STI as a starting point, the modifications done to the S209 were far more substantial and include wider body and engine modifications to increase horsepower and performance. Bespoke Dunlop® tires that are 20mm wider and 19-inch x 9-inch BBS-forged wheels provide higher levels of traction to the S209 versus the earlier Type-RA. The changes were so significant that STI had to homologate the S209 for U.S. sale independently.

How does the acceleration of the S209 compare to WRX STI?
The S209 is developed with circuit driving in mind and will deliver substantially higher levels of handling and grip. The additional horsepower, wider track, and improved aerodynamics are also highly beneficial to quicker lap times.

What engine is under the hood in the S209?
The legendary EJ25, 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER engine. A revised air intake, upgraded fuel system, larger turbocharger, revised exhaust, and retuned Electronic Control Unit have been fitted to achieve better horsepower and torque ratings from this proven engine design. An intercooler water-spray system also is also fitted, with the water tank residing in the trunk.

Have there been any changes to engine tuning?
S209 engine tuning differs from other models and was tuned by STI.

What is the total horsepower and torque on the S209?
The maximum horsepower rating is 341 at 6,400 rpm. Torque is at 330 ft-lb at 3,600 rpm maximum.

Is the turbo boost pressure different from current production WRX STI?
Yes, the maximum boost pressure has increased to 18.9 psi. A larger turbocharger is fitted to the engine in order to achieve the higher horsepower rating.

Is the suspension different on the S209 from the WRX STI?
The suspension has been substantially upgraded with STI-tuned Bilstein® dampers (unique to S209), revised spring rates, pillow-ball bushings on inner and outer rear lateral links, and wider wheels with revised offset that widens the vehicle's track. Additionally, several enhancements to the vehicle's structure allow the suspension to work better.

Is the geometry different from the current WRX STI?
No, other than the wider track due to wheel offset.

Have the suspension dampers changed?
The S209 has STI-tuned Bilstein dampers.

Have the brakes been upgraded from the standard WRX STI?
Yes, the Brembo® brakes on the S209, with cross-drilled steel rotors and 6-piston monoblock front calipers and 2-piston monoblock rear calipers, have been upgraded with high-friction pads that deliver improved fade resistance.

Has the gearing changed?
The gear ratios do not change from the standard STI.

Will the S209 have new wheels and tires?
Yes, the S209 features exclusive 19-inch x 9-inch forged BBS alloy wheels with bespoke Dunlop GT600A summer-only tires.

What infotainment technology will S209 have?
The S209 comes standard with the SUBUARU STARLINK® 7.0-inch Multimedia system. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto***8482; integration are included on this system.

What colors will the S209 be offered in?
The S209 will be available in World Rally Blue with matte-dark-gray-finish wheels and Crystal White with matte-gold-finish wheels.

What body styles will the S209 be available in?
The S209 will be available in a 4-door sedan body style.

Will the S209 come in a variety of trim levels?
The S209 comes in one standard trim level.

How many S209 vehicles will be produced?
209 vehicles will be manufactured in total by Subaru Tecnica International at their Kiryu-Kogyo facility in Japan. Each vehicle will feature an individually numbered plate on the center console.

What is the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP)?
Pricing for the S209 will be released during fall 2019.

When will the S209 be available for purchase?
They will start arriving in Subaru retailers in fall 2019.

Will Subaru continue to offer S-Line in the U.S. in subsequent years?
This is the first S-Line model to be sold in the U.S. While we cannot say what the future holds, we can share we hope to continue growing the STI brand.

I'm surprised the S209 is 90 lbs heavier than the Type RA.. even with the larger wheels, wider fenders and extra chassis bracing.
Quote:
They're wrapped around forged BBS wheels that are a half-inch wider than the RA's (now 9.0 x 19). This new footwear adds about 24 of the S209's 90-pound weight gain over the Type RA.
24 lbs (6 lbs per wheel) more going from 19x8.5" w/ 245/35R19 tire to 19x9" w/ 265/35R19 tire. It's interesting that they went with a 20mm wider tire while maintaining the same aspect ratio. That's ~7mm (.28") increase in the sidewall height. At least it reduces the chances of curbing the wheel a bit

Wait wait.... So is this a bait and switch now? Am I reading all these comments correctly? No Forged internals? SOA pulled the original press release which mentioned that? All that hype was total BS??

Better line up for the WRX STI EJ20 Final edition.. bwahahahahahaha. Yes there is such a thing.

Quote:
WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition

Subaru will end production of the "EJ20" horizontally-opposed engine, which has been one of the main power units since its debut in 1989, by the end of March 2020. Consequently, it will stop taking orders for the current WRX STI model equipped with EJ20 engine and sold in Japan market by the end of the calendar year 2019. A special edition WRX STI "EJ20 Final Edition", which the prototype of the model will be showcased at Tokyo Motor Show, has been developed to commemorate the history of EJ20 engine.

Started with the first generation Legacy in 1989, EJ20 engine has been used on a wide variety of Subaru models and also powered racing cars competed in world class competition such as World Rally Championship, Nürburgring 24 Hour Race and so on. "EJ20 Final Edition" features special items such as a balanced EJ20 engine and gold-painted BBS 19-inch alloy wheels to commemorate the last model that uses the EJ20 engine which has powered a series of Subaru models.

A special webpage (https://www.subaru.jp/wrx/sti_ej20finaledition/) will be set up on the Subaru official website, where information about the WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition will be posted.

(Note: WRX STI models with EJ20 engines are currently sold in Japan only. STI models sold in overseas markets are powered by different types of engines and production of those engines will continue.)
Ohh wait this ^^^^^ is only for the JDM market. Potential S209 buyers, rest easy your car is assembled in the special STI factory.

I also noticed Subaru's very cautious choice of words for the power rating..
Quote:
The result is 341 horsepower[2] and 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds[3].

[2] Based on manufacturer's initial testing. Subject to change.
[3] Manufacturer estimate.

What is the total horsepower and torque on the S209?
The maximum horsepower rating is 341 at 6,400 rpm. Torque is at 330 ft-lb at 3,600 rpm maximum.
