Where will the extra power come from?

Add a turbo? Doubt it. Too much money.
Use 2.4L NA motor from Ascent? Also too expensive.
I'm guessing the most likely scenario would be a slightly more aggressive tune but still using 87 octane.

We already talked about it. It's getting the 2.5 liter engine from the Forester/Legacy/Outback.

“and legendary Subaru reliability you’ve come to expect”

Excited to see how the 2.5 performs in the smaller Crosstrek. Pretty happy with the 2.5 in my Legacy overall!

Someone posted the 2.5L should provide a decent noticeable bump in power.

The current engine totally sucks, so going from “sucks” to “adequate” should be noticeable.

IMO, "[...]more horsepower, ... , while keeping the efficient gas mileage[...]" is code for "we kind of neutered FB25, but enjoy !".
It's time for FB18DIT already; it should easily be way more efficient than FB25 on the highway.

That's code for "we have no idea why we developed the 2.0 when the 2.5 is just about as efficient."

No. YOU have no idea why they made a 2.0. YOU will be able to see why when the 2.5 hits on it's monroney label.

Sooooo.........poll...........is that Crosstrek Sport green or gold?

Is that confirmed or are we just assuming Subaru will be Subaru?

uh, there is 1 mpg difference between the impreza 2.0 and legacy 2.5 and the legacy is substantially heavier.

I thought 2.0 is because of the liter tax on engines in Japan?

Bingo! The taxes on 2.0+ and 3.0+ engines in Europe and Japan are larger.

Problem is Subaru engines get a smog tax also. So, Subaru is a hard sell in Europe. Unless they fix their whole injection system they may be pushed out of Europe. That may be where Toyota comes in. However, you are fighting some physics with Subaru boxer designs stuck within the frame rails.

Peace,

Greg

I think they're going to take advantage of X-Mode and the limited production they'll initially launch with, and if sales soar then a manual could be introduced. Now is definitely the time to keep things simple on the production side.

Would the MT availability changed your mind about buying a 2.5L CrossTrek? I seriously doubt that.. even if it came with a 2.5L MT I have zero interest in these cars, so Subaru knowing this, I think made the correct move by just putting a CVT in there for the normal non-car folks to sell to.

I hear the Impreza's MT is one of the worst wobbly junk gearbox anyway.

The Impreza still uses the 5 speed. Crosstrek is 6 speed. While no STi tranny, I've had no complaints about mine. 19 Crosstrek Premium 6MT. I would wonder what they'll charge if they go to 2.5L. The hybrid Crosstrek is a joke price wise for the added torque at low end. Starting at $35k? No thanks. I'll be happy to have the MT and seven grand in my pocket.

My MIL was looking to replace her 5mt 08 Legacyl; she wanted more ground clearance, AWD & a stick - but the 2.0L was a dog even compared to her old NA EJ Legacy, the 2.5L meant she might continue to Subaru, not now though.
